A barrister is a type of lawyer in common law jurisdictions. Barristers mostly specialise in courtroom advocacy and litigation. Their tasks include taking cases in superior courts and tribunals,drafting legal pleadings,researching the law and giving expert legal opinions.
A lawyer is a person who practices law. The role of a lawyer varies greatly across different legal jurisdictions. A lawyer can be classified as an advocate,government lawyer,attorney,barrister,canon lawyer,civil law notary,counsel,counselor,solicitor,legal executive,or public servant —with each role having different functions and privileges. Working as a lawyer generally involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific problems. Some lawyers also work primarily in advancing the interests of the law and legal profession.
A notary public of the common law is a public officer constituted by law to serve the public in non-contentious matters usually concerned with general financial transactions,estates,deeds,powers-of-attorney,and foreign and international business. A notary's main functions are to validate the signature of a person;administer oaths and affirmations;take affidavits and statutory declarations,including from witnesses;authenticate the execution of certain classes of documents;take acknowledgments;provide notice of foreign drafts;provide exemplifications and notarial copies;and,to perform certain other official acts depending on the jurisdiction. Such transactions are known as notarial acts,or more commonly,notarizations. The term notary public only refers to common-law notaries and should not be confused with civil-law notaries.
In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth countries,a King's Counsel during the reign of a king,or Queen's Counsel during the reign of a queen,is a lawyer who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Technically appointed by the monarch of the country to be one of 'His [Her] Majesty's Counsel learned in the law',the position originated in England and Wales. Some Commonwealth countries have either abolished the position,or renamed it so as to remove monarchical connotations,for example,'Senior counsel' or 'Senior Advocate'.
The Supreme Court of Canada is the highest court in the judicial system of Canada. It comprises nine justices,whose decisions are the ultimate application of Canadian law,and grants permission to between 40 and 75 litigants each year to appeal decisions rendered by provincial,territorial and federal appellate courts. The Supreme Court is bijural,hearing cases from two major legal traditions and bilingual,hearing cases in both official languages of Canada.
Bora Laskin was a Canadian jurist who served as the 14th chief justice of Canada from 1973 to 1984. Laskin was appointed a puisne justice of the Supreme Court in 1970,and served on the Ontario Court of Appeal from 1965 to 1970. Before he was named to the bench,Laskin worked as a lawyer and in academia.
Roland Roy McMurtry,is a Canadian lawyer,retired judge and former politician in Ontario. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1975 to 1985,serving in the cabinet of Bill Davis as Attorney General and as Solicitor General. After leaving politics,McMurtry was High Commissioner of Canada to the United Kingdom between 1985 and 1988. He became a judge in 1991 and was appointed as Chief Justice of Ontario in 1996. McMurtry retired from the bench in 2007 and returned to the private practice of law.
Julian Fantino,,is a Canadian retired police official and former politician. He was the Conservative Party of Canada Member of the Parliament of Canada for the riding of Vaughan following a November 29,2010 by-election,until his defeat in 2015. On January 4,2011,Fantino was named Minister of State for Seniors;on May 18,2011,he became Associate Minister of National Defence;on July 4,2012,he was named Minister for International Cooperation. Fantino served as the Minister of Veterans Affairs from 2013 until 2015,when he was demoted to his earlier post of Associate Minister of National Defence following sustained criticism of his performance at Veterans Affairs. He was defeated by Liberal candidate Francesco Sorbara in the 2015 election.
Edward Leonard Greenspan,was one of Canada's most famous defence lawyers,and a prolific author of legal volumes. His fame was owed to numerous high-profile clients and to his national exposure on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio series The Scales of Justice (1982–94).

From 2006 until his appointment to the Supreme Court,Brion served in the Cabinet of President Macapagal-Arroyo as the Secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Marc Nadon LL.L. is a supernumerary judge on the Canadian Federal Court of Appeal. He has practised law in both Quebec and the United Kingdom,focusing on maritime and transportation law. He was also an arbitrator and former lecturer in law at the Universitéde Sherbrooke. Nadon was nominated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to be a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in October 2013. Following controversy about the appointment,the federal government referred the constitutionality of the appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada. In their decision in Reference Re Supreme Court Act,ss 5 and 6,the Supreme Court quashed his appointment,concluding he did not meet the eligibility criteria provided in the Supreme Court Act.
Richard Wagner is a Canadian jurist serving as the 18th and current chief justice of Canada since 2017. He previously served as a puisne justice of the Quebec Court of Appeal (2011–2012) and of the Supreme Court of Canada (2012–2017). For several months in 2021,following Julie Payette's resignation as Canada's governor general,Wagner was the administrator of the government of Canada as well as chief justice.
The judiciary of Solomon Islands is a branch of the Government of Solomon Islands that interprets and applies the laws of Solomon Islands,to ensure equal justice under law,and to provide a mechanism for dispute resolution. The legal system is derived from chapter VII,part II of the Constitution,adopted when the country became independent from the United Kingdom in 1978. The Constitution provided for the creation of a High Court,with original jurisdiction in civil and criminal cases,and a Court of Appeal. It also provided for the possibility of "subordinate courts",with no further specification (art.84).
