The Supreme Court of Canada is the highest court in the judicial system of Canada. It comprises nine justices,whose decisions are the ultimate application of Canadian law,and grants permission to between 40 and 75 litigants each year to appeal decisions rendered by provincial,territorial and federal appellate courts. The Supreme Court is bijural,hearing cases from two major legal traditions and bilingual,hearing cases in both official languages of Canada.
The chief justice of Canada is the presiding judge of the nine-member Supreme Court of Canada,the highest judicial body in Canada. As such,the chief justice is the highest-ranking judge of the Canadian court system. The Supreme Court Act makes the chief justice,a Crown in Council appointment,meaning the Crown acting on the advice of the prime minister and minister of justice. The chief justice serves until they resign,turn 75 years old,die,or are removed from office for cause. By tradition,a new chief justice is chosen from among the court's incumbent puisne justices.
Osgoode Hall Law School,commonly shortened to Osgoode,is the law school of York University in Toronto,Ontario,Canada. It is home to the Law Commission of Ontario,the Journal of Law and Social Policy,and the Osgoode Hall Law Journal. A variety of LL.M. and Ph.D. degrees in law are available.
Beverley Marian McLachlin is a Canadian jurist and author who served as the 17th chief justice of Canada from 2000 to 2017. She is the longest-serving chief justice in Canadian history and the first woman to hold the position.
Bora Laskin was a Canadian jurist who served as the 14th chief justice of Canada from 1973 to 1984. Sir Lyman Poore Duff,,PC(UK) was a Canadian lawyer and judge who served as the eighth Chief Justice of Canada. He was the longest-serving justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Rosalie Silberman Abella is a Canadian jurist. In 2004,Abella was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada,becoming the first Jewish woman and refugee to sit on the Canadian Supreme Court bench. She retired from the federal bench in 2021.
The Court of Appeal for Ontario is the appellate court for the province of Ontario,Canada. The seat of the court is Osgoode Hall in downtown Toronto.
Bertha Wernham Wilson was a Canadian jurist and the first female puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Before her ascension to Canada's highest court,she was the first female associate and partner at Osler,Hoskin &Harcourt and the first woman appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario. During her time at Osler,she created the first in-firm research department in the Canadian legal industry.
Ronald Martland,was a Canadian lawyer and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. He was the second Albertan appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada,taking the place of Justice Nolan,who died after only a short time on the Court.
Peter deCarteret Cory,was a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada,from 1989 to 1999.
Andromache Karakatsanis is a Canadian jurist. She was nominated to the Supreme Court of Canada by Stephen Harper in October 2011. She is the first Greek-Canadian judge on the Court. Since the retirement of Rosalie Abella on July 1,2021,and of Michael Moldaver on September 1,2022,she is the longest-serving member of the Supreme Court.
Richard Wagner is a Canadian jurist serving as the 18th and current Chief Justice of Canada since 2017. He previously served as a puisne justice of the Quebec Court of Appeal (2011–2012) and of the Supreme Court of Canada (2012–2017). For several months in 2021,following Julie Payette's resignation as Canada's governor general,Wagner was the administrator of the government of Canada as well as chief justice.
Michael H. Tulloch is a Canadian judge. On December 19,2022,Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment of Tulloch as the new Chief Justice of Ontario. He is the first Black judge appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal and the first Black Chief Justice of any province.
Suzanne Côté is a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. She was nominated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to replace retiring Justice Louis LeBel. Before her appointment to the Supreme Court,she was a partner at Osler,Hoskin &Harcourt LLP and previously Stikeman Elliott LLP in Montréal. She is the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court directly from private practice.
Malcolm H. Rowe is a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Rowe is the first judge from Newfoundland and Labrador to sit on the Supreme Court.
Michelle O'Bonsawin is a Canadian jurist serving as a puisne justice on the Supreme Court of Canada since September 1,2022. Before her appointment to the Supreme Court,she served as a judge on the Ontario Superior Court of Justice from 2017 to 2022. O'Bonsawin is the first Indigenous Canadian to serve as a Supreme Court justice.
Mary T. Moreau is a Canadian jurist serving as a puisne justice on the Supreme Court of Canada since November 6,2023. She formerly served as the Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench of Alberta from 2017–2023. Her formal welcoming to the Supreme Court of Canada occurred on February 19,2024.
