Gianandrea Fabbro is an Italian motorcycle designer and a senior designer for Ducati motorcycles in Bologna Italy. He gained notoriety when he was given the responsibility to design the next generation of Ducati's Superbike line, the 1098, after Pierre Terblanche's 999 failed to gain the popularity and success of the iconic 916 designed by Massimo Tamburini. Ducati 1098

The Ducati 1098 is a sport bike made by Ducati from 2007 to 2009, in three versions, the 1098, 1098S, and 1098R. The 1098 was succeeded by the 1198 in 2009, though the 1098R remained in production that year.

Ducati 1098 Design

In 2006 Ducati decided to go back to the 1994 roots, and the design of the 916, while still keeping the 1098 modern for many years. Fabbro was given the task of designing the 1098 while he was still Terblanche's junior. [2]

In an interview about the development of the 1098 Fabbro downplayed his role in the success of the 1098 design when he said “I have my dreams and take care of the creative. Other people work on different parts of the bike. My creative department are closely connected to the technical department. Part of the success of a bike is its technical specs. It is always like this.” [3]

Ducati 1199 Design

After the launch of 1098, Ducati started working on its successor Ducati 1199 Panigale. The project was code-named 0801. The company started an internal contest for the job of designing the new Ducati sport bike. Three Ducati designers were chosen to compete, and two of the designs were developed into full-size mock-ups. Fabbro’s design won the contest. [4]

Ducati 1199 motorcycle

The Ducati 1199 Panigale was a 1,198 cc (73.1 cu in) Ducati sport bike introduced at the 2011 Milan Motorcycle Show. The motorcycle is named after the small manufacturing town of Borgo Panigale. Ducati had announced a larger displacement 1,285 cc (78.4 cu in) 1299 Panigale for the 2015 model year.

Sport bike type of motorcycle

A sportbike, or sports bike, is a motorcycle optimized for speed, acceleration, braking, and cornering on paved roads, typically at the expense of comfort and fuel economy by comparison with other motorcycles. Soichiro Honda wrote in the owner's manual of the 1959 Honda CB92 Benly Super Sport that, "Primarily, essentials of the motorcycle consists in the speed and the thrill," while Cycle World's Kevin Cameron says that, "A sportbike is a motorcycle whose enjoyment consists mainly from its ability to perform on all types of paved highway – its cornering ability, its handling, its thrilling acceleration and braking power, even its speed."

In an interview, Fabbro admits that he made the first drawings of what would become Ducati 1199 at the end of 2006, without knowing about the new project. “The first design was for fun! I knew there was no new bike happening but my dream was to make something very modern, compact and technical in design. The first sketch took me one afternoon. It was a pencil drawing so it was easy to erase it as I went along." [5]

Bimota

Bimota is a small Italian manufacturer of custom and production motorcycles. It was founded in 1973 in Rimini, Italy by Valerio Bianchi, Giuseppe Morri, and Massimo Tamburini. The company name is a portmanteau derived from the first two letters of each of the three founders' surnames, Bianchi Morri Tamburini.

Massimo Tamburini was an Italian motorcycle designer for Cagiva, Ducati, and MV Agusta, and one of the founders of Bimota. Tamburini's designs are iconic in their field, with one critic calling him the "Michelangelo of motorbike design". His Ducati 916 and MV Agusta F4 were included in the Guggenheim Museum's The Art of the Motorcycle exhibit of 1998–1999.

John Hopkins (motorcyclist) American motorcycle racer

John "Hopper" Hopkins is a motorcycle road racer based in United States. During 2017 he raced in the British Superbike Championship aboard a Ducati 1199 Panigale for Moto Rapido Racing, but suffered injuries from a crash at the season-finale race meeting in October, meaning he could not participate during 2018.

Ducati Paso

The Ducati Paso was introduced in 1986 with the slogan "Il nostro passato ha un grande futuro". The name was in honour of racer Renzo Pasolini, nicknamed "Paso", who died on 20 May 1973 in an accident at the Monza race track during the Italian motorcycle Grand Prix.

Ducati 999 motorcycle

The Ducati 999 superseded the Massimo Tamburini designed Ducati 916, Ducati 996 and Ducati 998 range of superbikes in 2003, and was produced through 2006. This motorcycle enjoyed great success in World Superbike, and was raced in the series through the 2007 season, despite no longer being produced, pending rules changes by the series' governing body, FIM, to allow competition of the new Ducati 1098.

Miguel Galluzzi is an industrial designer specializing in motorcycle design. Galluzzi currently heads Piaggio's Advanced Design Center (PADC) in Pasadena, California, where he manages the design of the Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Derbi and Gilera motorcycle brands, working closely with the company's styling headquarters in Italy as well as its research and development centers in China, India and Vietnam.

Ducati singles

Chief Engineer Fabio Taglioni developed a desmodromic valve system in these years, a system that opens and closes the valves using the camshaft, without the need for valve springs. Pierre Terblanche South African motorcycle designer

Pierre Terblanche is a South African motorcycle designer born in 1956 in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape. He started his career in advertising but felt the need to move into the design world. After moving to Germany and working with Volkswagen design he worked at Cagiva's Research Center at San Marino under the direction of Massimo Tamburini. When Cagiva decided to sell Ducati to US-based Texas Pacific Group, Pierre Terblanche chose to follow Ducati. In December 2007, he left Ducati to pursue other interests believing that he should be a designer, not a manager. He has designed boats for the South African shipyard Bobkat.

Superbike World Championship is a motorsport road racing series for modified production motorcycles also known as superbike racing. The championship was founded in 1988. The Superbike World Championship consists of a series of rounds held on permanent racing facilities. Each round has two full length races and, from 2019, an additional ten-lap sprint race known as the Superpole race. The results of all three races are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for riders and one for manufacturers.

Ducati 848 motorcycle

The Ducati 848 is a sport bike with a 849 cc (51.8 cu in) 90° V-twin engine manufactured by Ducati. It was announced on November 6, 2007 for the 2008 model year, replacing the 749, although the 848 model name was already listed on the compatible parts table for the 1098 fuel tank, giving away the secret a few months early. The 848 makes a tested 86 kW (115.6 hp) at 10,000 rpm and 84.1 N⋅m (62 lb⋅ft) at 8,250 rpm. With a manufacturer claimed dry weight of 168 kg (370 lb), the 848 undercuts its larger displacement sibling, the 1198, by 5 kg (11 lb).

Ducati Diavel

The Ducati Diavel is the second cruiser motorcycle from Ducati, after the Indiana of 1986–1990. The 2011 model year Diavel debuted in November 2010 at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan. The second generation Diavel debuted as a 2015 model on March 3, 2014 during the Volkswagen Group Night in Geneva.

Ducati MH900e

The Ducati MH900e is a retro sport motorcycle made by Ducati in 2001 and 2002, in a limited production run of 2,000 units. It was designed by Pierre Terblanche as an homage to Mike Hailwood's 1978 racing motorcycle. In 1984 Ducati had made the 900 MHR street bike, also an homage to Hailwood's 1978 bike.

Ducati Panigale V4

The Ducati Panigale V4 is a sport bike with a 1,103 cc (67.3 cu in) desmodromic 90° V4 engine introduced by Ducati in 2018 as the successor to the V-twin engined 1299. A smaller engine displacement version complies with the Superbike category competition regulations which state "Over 750 cc up to 1000 cc" for three and four cylinder 4-stroke engines.
