Gilmore (or Gillmore), was a merchant ship built at Sulkea, opposite Calcutta, British India, in 1824. In 1829-30 she made a voyage delivering settlers to the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. She then made two voyages transporting convicts from England to Tasmania. She was wrecked in 1866.
Gilmore & Co., shipbuilders in Calcutta, launched Gilmore in 1824 at a cost of 82,000 sicca rupees. [5] She was a full-rigged ship sheathed with copper. Gilmore & Co. her the next year for a free trader. [1]
In 1829 Thomas Peel, her owner, had Gilmore lengthened especially for the Australian passenger trade. In 1841 she was doubled and re-sheathed and in 1843 and 1848 had large repairs done to her.
Gillmore enters the Register of Shipping in 1825 with Law, master, Hunter, owner, and trade London—Calcutta. [3] The 1829 Register of Shipping shows Gillmore, of 500 tons (bm), having undergone lengthening and a large repair that year, with W. Geary, master, Peel & Co., owners, and trade London—New South Wales. [4]
Gilmore sailed from St Katherine Docks, London, on 18 July 1829. She then embarked more emigrants at Gravesend and Plymouth, where Thomas Peel, who had bought her and who had organized the expedition, joined her with his family. [6] In all, she carried Peel and some 179 settlers that he had recruited. She arrived at the Swan River Colony on 15 December.
Gilmore Avenue and Gilmore College, landmarks of Kwinana, are named in honour of the ship.
Under the command of James Berry and surgeon George Roberts, she left London, England on 27 November 1831 and arrived at Hobart Town on 22 March 1832. [7] She embarked 224 male convicts, one of whom died on the voyage. [8]
Gilmore sailed from Hobart with passengers, cargo, and one convict, and arrived at Sydney on 21 April 1832. [9] She left Port Jackson on 11 May bound for Batavia.
On her second convict voyage under the command of J. Theaker and surgeon Joseph Steret, she left Spithead, England on 5 October 1838, and arrived at Hobart on 24 January 1839. [10] She embarked 279 male convicts, one of whom died on the voyage. [11]
Gilmore left Hobart Town on 26 February 1839, bound for Sydney, with passengers, cargo, and six convicts. [12] She left Port Jackson on 14 April bound for India in ballast.

Gilmore is last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1861 with W. Wright, master, and trade Southampton—Cape of Good Hope. There is no listing for her owner.
Gilmore was wrecked on Hard Lewis, off the east side of St Martin's of the Isles of Scilly on 12 April 1866. She was in ballast from her home port to Quebec and the crew managed to get away in the ship's boats. [13]
Guildford was a two-decker merchant ship launched in 1810. She transported convicts to New South Wales. Of her eight voyages delivering convicts, for three she was under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). She underwent major repairs in 1819, her hull was sheathed in copper in 1822; in 1825 she received new wales, top sides and deck, the copper was repaired and other repairs. Guildford was lost without a trace in 1831.
Bengal Merchant was a sailing ship built of teak in Bengal and launched there on 26 May 1812. Between 1812 and 1829, Bengal Merchant was in private trade as a licensed ship. She served the East India Company (EIC) in 1813 and from 1830 till 1834. She also twice transported convicts from Britain to Australia before she was hulked in 1856.
Asia was a merchant ship built by A. Hall & Company at Aberdeen in 1818. She made eight voyages between 1820 and 1836 transporting convicts from Britain to Australia. She made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1826 and 1827. At the same time she served in private trade to India as a licensed ship. She also carried assisted emigrants to Australia. She was last listed in 1845.
David Clark was launched in 1816 and may have been broken up at Batavia in 1854. She sailed one of the last voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). In 1839 she carried mainly Scots assisted migrants to Australia, and was the first immigrant ship to sail from Great Britain directly to Port Phillip. In 1842 she transported more than 300 convicts to Hobart. She was last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1854.
Asia was a merchant ship launched at Calcutta in 1815 for Charles Hackett. She made four voyages transporting convicts from Great Britain to Australia, and between 1826 and 1830, two voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). She was hulked or broken up c.1860.
Dunvegan Castle was a merchant ship built at Chittagong in 1819. She made two voyages transporting convicts from England and Ireland to Australia. She also transported troops at least twice, once to Burma (1824) and once to Spain (1835). She was lost in 1837.
Bussorah Merchant was a merchant ship built at Calcutta in 1818. She made three voyages transporting convicts from England and Ireland to Australia and later carried emigrants and other passengers to Australia.
Caroline was built at Cochin, British India, in 1825. She sailed to the United Kingdom and took up British registry. She then sailed between England and India under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). She made one voyage transporting convicts from Ireland to Australia. Later, she carried immigrants to Australia. She was wrecked in March 1850.
Norfolk was built at Littlehampton, England in 1814. She was originally a West Indiaman, and then sailed to India and Quebec. She made four voyages transporting convicts from England to Australia, one voyage from Ireland to Australia and one from Madras and Mauritius to Australia. She was wrecked on 7 July 1837.
Forth was a 397-ton sailing ship built in 1814 at Calcutta, British India under the name New Carmo. She was sold at Manila, but then repurchased at Calcutta and renamed Forth. In 1830 she made one voyage transporting convicts to New South Wales. Forth was still operating out of Calcutta in 1839.
Clyde was a merchant ship built at Greenock, Scotland in 1820. She made two voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). She then made three voyages transporting convicts from England and Ireland to Australia. She was last listed in 1845.
Eliza was a merchant ship built in Java, Netherlands East Indies, in 1815. She was registered at Calcutta in 1818. She made two voyages transporting convicts from England to Australia. She was last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1848.
Elizabeth was a merchant ship built at Singapore, British India in 1830. She made one voyage transporting convicts from the Swan River Colony to Sydney, Australia. She wrecked in 1839.
Georgiana was a merchant ship built in Quebec, Canada in 1826. She made three voyages transporting convicts from England to Australia. Georgiana was last listed in 1841.
Eliza was a merchant ship built in British India, probably in 1804. Between 1819 and 1831 she made five voyages transporting convicts from England and Ireland to Australia. In between, she also made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC). Her crew abandoned her at sea in 1836 as she was leaking uncontrollably.
Hooghly was a full-rigged merchant ship built on the Thames, England, and launched in 1819. She made two voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC), four voyages transporting convicts from England and Ireland to Australia, as well as voyages transporting emigrants to South Australia between 1839 and 1856. Around 1858 she was re-rigged as a barque. She sank off Algiers in 1863.
Maitland was launched at Calcutta in 1811. She made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1812 and 1830. She also made three voyages transporting convicts to Australia between 1840 and 1846. Thereafter she traded widely before she was wrecked c.1869.
Susan was launched at Calcutta in 1813. She initially traded in the East Indies as a country ship, and with Britain under license from the British East India Company (EIC). Between 1829 and 1831 she made two voyages for the EIC. Then between 1834 and 1836 she made four voyages transporting convicts, two to New South Wales, and two to Tasmania. She foundered in 1846 as she was sailing between London and the Cape of Good Hope.
Lord Lyndoch was launched in 1814 at Calcutta. After she sailed to England she made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC). Between 1831 and 1841 she made five voyages transporting convicts to Australia, three to Hobart and two to Sydney. She became a transport and suffered a maritime incident in 1844. She was last listed in 1847.
Mangles was built in Calcutta in 1803 and immediately sailed for England. Including that voyage, she made a total of six voyages as an "extra ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). Between her first as second voyages for the EIC a French privateer captured her. Mangles also made nine voyages transporting convicts to Australia: eight voyages to Port Jackson, one to Hobart Town, and one in which she delivered some convicts to Port Jackson but carried most of her charges to Norfolk Island. She was last listed in 1844.
