Ginger is the debut studio album by Dutch electronic music producer Speedy J (Jochem Paap). Released via a joint deal between Plus 8 and Warp in September 1993, the album was the sixth release in Warp's Artificial Intelligence series, which focused on "electronic listening music" by different artists. It peaked at number 68 on the UK Albums Chart and remains Speedy J's most successful album there.
After establishing himself as a techno producer and disc jockey, Paap recorded Ginger with the intention of transferring his techno sound to a home listening environment, an idea he shared with Plus 8 founder Richie Hawtin, who also contributed to the Artificial Intelligence series. The album carries Paap's minimalist style into music that combines hard beats with ambient music, with 4/4 beats but atypical percussive elements and tempos. Although the album was rooted in techno and rave music, it is considered one of the earliest IDM albums. Upon release, it received acclaim for its forward-thinking style. "De-Orbit", which had also featured on the Artificial Intelligence compilation album, was placed at number 9 on Fact magazine's 2014 list of the "100 greatest IDM tracks". [1]
As one of the first techno producers to hail from Benelux, [2] Rotterdam-based Jochem Paap began creating music as a techno producer and nightclub disc jockey, and chose the pseudonym Speedy J in reference to his prowess as a DJ. [3] He established a fan base with the release of the acid techno twelve-inch singles including "Three O'Three" and "Something for Your Mind." [4] His profile rose when two of his tracks were included on the compilation Artificial Intelligence (1992), [3] including "De-Orbit," [1] which went on to feature on Ginger. [5] Paap recorded Ginger, his debut album, [6] at The Boiler. [5] He wrote and produced the album alone. [5] The album was released via a joint deal between Plus 8 Records and Warp Records; [6] Plus 8 founder Richie Hawtin shared a kinship with Paap as both were intrigued in "finding a way to push techno via the album format," and both Ginger and Hawtin's album Dimension Intrusion (released as FUSE) were initially issued via Plus 8 and then licensed to Warp's album series Artificial Intelligence . [7] The series focused on "electronic listening music" by different Warp artists, with albums in the series emphasising texture and melody over driving beats, and went on to help establish Warp as a seminal label in the "post-techno, post-rave underground." [8]
According to Joshua Glazer of AllMusic, Paap's clear intent with Ginger was "to take his music out of the rave and into the home-listening environment," and balances elements of the manic energy that defined his early releases with a lush sound palette. [4] The album blends textures of ambient music with hard beats, [3] presenting a dynamic, melodic and occasionally subtle style with influences of club music. [9] According to Rupert Howe of Select , the minimalist style of Paap's prior productions is presented on the album with a more domesticated pace, complemented by a percussive, semi-ambient groove that "recognises that the secret of trance lies as much in the groove as in clouds of ethereal synth noise." [10] Paul Cooper of Pitchfork described the record's style as "belittled beats in deference to drifting, ambient nebulae." [11] Unlike other Artificial Intelligence albums, Ginger makes usage of pauses, abruptness and empty space. [12]
Ginger is widely considered an IDM album, [3] as although 4/4 beats appear on each track, none of the tracks possess tempos or percussive elements considered "hefty enough to meet dancer's needs," according to Glazer. [4] The record is nonetheless considered to be primarily techno in style by Joe Muggs of The Wire , who felt the album was "still rave music". [8] Muzik made note of the album's "cinematic techno" sound, [13] while Heath K Hignight of Cleveland Scene felt the album was "a dynamic dance-listening hybrid album." [14] In an interview with The List , Paap described his influences as dance music's "black roots", such as Arthur Baker's twelve-inch remixes and jazz-funk from the late 1970s and early 1980s. [15]
The album was the first in the Artificial Intelligence series to use interlude tracks (described by writer Tyler Bowles as 'vignettes'); these tracks are titled "Fill" with a seemingly random number suffixed. [12] Muzik described the opening track "Ginger" as having an "almost physical presence," describing it as "[gradually] filling the room". They felt this was reflective of how Paap was a "sound sculptor." [13] "Beam Me Up!" features a medley of melodies and incorporates styles of funk and disco, [12] while "R2 D2" features a choppy intro and is characterised by a light electro beat with synthesizer bleeps and playful, grandiose waves of "machine sound." [4] "Basic Design" introduces the producer's signature drum decay and features a bassline that would become characteristic of early proto-trance compositions. [4] "Pepper" features sweeps of ambient music, [4] and layers a bassline and chopped vocals atop synthesised choir excerpts. [12] Bowles noted the stylistic shift between tracks, "going from the active 'R2 D2' to the technical 'Fill 14' and back to head-bobbing with 'Basic Design'." [12]

Warp Records released Ginger on 21 June 1993, [12] [18] while Plus 8 released the album concurrently in Canada. [19] The Designer's Republic designed the artwork for the Warp version. [5] Paap later described the sleeves of Ginger and his other early albums as incorporating "a typical 'intelligent techno' style." [13] In the United Kingdom, the album reached number 68 on the UK Albums Chart and stayed on the chart for one week; it currently remains Paap's highest-charting album in the UK. [20] In a contemporary review, Rupert Howe of Select magazine praised how Ginger was "only tangentially connected to the here-today-gone-yesterday that plagues club dancefloors." He felt that although the album may sound uneventful on paper, this nonetheless exemplified how "the simplest pleasures are often the hardest to get to grips with." [10]
Reviewing the album retrospectively, Joshua Glazer of AllMusic's Joshua Glazer describes Ginger as finding Paap at "roughly the same point on the growth curve that the Beatles were during Rubber Soul ." He wrote that each sound on the album was "magnificently structured, in perfect pitch and timber with every other sound, making Ginger a masterpiece of techno music as audio design." [16] Writing for A Guide to Essential Ambient & Downtempo Albums, Mike Watson described Ginger as "among the finest lounge-room techno or 'electronic listening music' releases of the decade." [21] Glazer describes Ginger as among the first IDM records, writing that it singled a "furtherance from techno's dancefloor mandate" which would soon be adopted by acclaimed acts like the Black Dog and Autechre. [4] In 2014, Fact placed "De-Orbit" at number 9 on its list of the "100 greatest IDM tracks". [1] They described the track as an "important turning point" in the progression between techno and IDM, and commented that Ginger and Paap's other early productions "remain a milestone to this day. What began as techno suddenly began to feel like something else." [1]

Intelligent dance music (IDM) is a style of electronic music originating in the early 1990s, defined by idiosyncratic experimentation rather than specific genre constraints. The music often described with the term originally emerged in the early 1990s from the culture and sound palette of styles of electronic dance music such as acid house, ambient techno, Detroit techno and breakbeat; it has been regarded as better suited to home listening than dancing. Prominent artists in the style include Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, μ-Ziq, the Black Dog and the later duo Plaid, as well as earlier acts such as the Future Sound of London and Orbital.
Warp Records is a British independent record label founded in Sheffield in 1989 by record store employees Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell and record producer Robert Gordon. It is currently based in London.
Richard "Richie" Hawtin is a British-Canadian electronic musician and DJ. He became involved with Detroit techno's second wave in the early 1990s, and has been a leading exponent of minimal techno since the mid-1990s. He became known for his recordings under the Plastikman and F.U.S.E. aliases. Under the latter, he released his debut album Dimension Intrusion (1993) as part of Warp's Artificial Intelligence series.
...I Care Because You Do is the third studio album by the British electronic music artist and producer Richard D. James under the alias of Aphex Twin. It was released on 24 April 1995 through Warp Records and contains material recorded between 1990 and 1994. It marked James's return to a beat-driven sound following the mostly ambient album Selected Ambient Works Volume II (1994), and combines abrasive rhythms with symphonic and ambient elements. The cover artwork is a self-portrait of James.

Selected Ambient Works Volume II is the second studio album by the British electronic music artist and producer Richard D. James under the alias of Aphex Twin. It was released on 7 March 1994 through Warp Records. Its title follows James's debut Selected Ambient Works 85–92. Unlike that record, most of the tracks are purely ambient music, without the earlier volume's ambient techno beats. James said the music was inspired through lucid dreaming, and likened it to "standing in a power station on acid."
Amber is the second studio album by English electronic music duo Autechre, released on 7 November 1994 by Warp. It was the first Autechre album to be composed entirely of new material, as their debut album Incunabula (1993) was a compilation of older tracks.
Artificial Intelligence is a series of albums by Warp Records released from 1992–1994 to exhibit the capabilities and sounds of electronic music. Warp described the new music as "electronic listening music" to clarify that it was meant more for the mind than the body. The sleevenote on the 1992 compilation said "Are you sitting comfortably? Artificial Intelligence is for long journeys, quiet nights and club drowsy dawns. Listen with an open mind." The series is remarkable for its inclusion of groups and individuals who would later become leaders in modern electronic music, techno, and ambient, such as Alex Paterson, Plaid, Richard D. James, Richie Hawtin, and Autechre. Every album in the series, aside from Dimension Intrusion, has its name enclosed in parentheses on its cover.
Surfing on Sine Waves is a studio album by the musician and producer Richard D. James under the alias Polygon Window. It is the only album released under this name; James is better known as Aphex Twin. The record was released on 11 January 1993 through Warp Records. It entered the Dance Albums Chart at No. 2 on 23 January 1993. James' previous album, Selected Ambient Works 85–92, was then at No. 9 on the chart, and James briefly had two records in the Dance Albums Top 10 under different pseudonyms. The 2001 reissue edition includes the previously unreleased tracks "Portreath Harbour" and "Redruth School".
Jochem George Paap, known by his stage name Speedy J, is a Dutch electronic music producer based in Rotterdam. His breakthrough came with the release in 1992 of the minimal techno track "Pullover". He released music as part of Warp Records' Artificial Intelligence series in the 1990s, including his debut LP Ginger (1993).
B12 are a British electronic music duo consisting of Mike Golding and Steve Rutter. First appearing in the early 1990s under a variety of monikers, including Musicology, Redcell and Cmetric, the duo were often mistaken as hailing from Detroit, their sound being comparable to the so-called second wave of Detroit techno. This was compounded by the signature style of their initial releases on their own imprint B12 Records, limited editions on coloured 12" vinyl with cryptic messages etched into the run-out grooves, and the fact that Golding and Rutter tended to shy away from the press, and rarely gave interviews, which added to the mystery of their identities.
Higher Intelligence Agency (HIA) is the main electronic music project of Birmingham, UK-based Robert (Bobby) Bird. The project was featured on Warp's Artificial Intelligence II compilation and went on to release the critically acclaimed albums Colourform (1993) and Freefloater (1995).

Electro-Soma is the debut studio album by British electronic music duo B12. It was released on Warp on 29 March 1993 and is the fourth release in Warp's Artificial Intelligence series. Some of the album's tracks had been previously released on the duo's own B12 Record label under their pseudonyms Musicology, Redcell, and Cmetric. Thus, Electro-Soma functions more as a compilation of some their earliest material than as a proper full-length LP, much like Incunabula by Autechre.
Dimension Intrusion is the debut studio album by Canadian electronic music producer Richie Hawtin, credited under the alias F.U.S.E. It was released in June 1993 by Plus 8 and Warp, serving as the fifth album in Warp's Artificial Intelligence series.
Sheath is the third and final studio album by British IDM project LFO. It was released by Warp on 22 September 2003. It peaked at number 27 on the UK Independent Albums Chart.
A Word of Science is the debut studio album by British electronic producers Nightmares on Wax. Released by Warp Records in September 1991, it is the act's only album as a group before it became a solo vehicle for George Evelyn. Evelyn nonetheless recorded and produced the album alone, incorporating samples and elements from demo tapes he made in the late 1980s. Although Nightmares on Wax debuted with two well-received techno singles in 1989-1990, A Word of Science is eclectic and largely moves the act towards a more mellow style influenced by funk, soul and hip hop, while still incorporating techno, drum and bass, and house styles.
Richard David James, known professionally as Aphex Twin, is a British musician, record producer, composer and DJ. He is known for his idiosyncratic work in electronic styles such as techno, ambient and jungle. Journalists from publications including Mixmag, The New York Times, NME, Fact,Clash and The Guardian have called James one of the most influential and important artists in contemporary electronic music.
Selected Ambient Works 85–92 is the debut studio album by the British electronic music artist and producer Richard D. James under the alias of Aphex Twin. It was released on 9 November 1992 through Apollo Records, a subsidiary of the Belgian label R&S Records. The album consists of ambient techno tracks that were recorded on cassette as early as 1985, when James was 13-14 years old. On release it received widespread acclaim and entered the Dance Albums Chart at No. 6 on 26 December 1992.
Close Combined is a compilation album by the British-Canadian minimalist techno DJ Richie Hawtin. Released on 20 September 2019 on his Plus 8 records imprint, it consists of 16 heavily remixed tracks from three live performances during his 2019 CLOSE live tour. The set list includes tracks by Charlotte de Witte, Mental Resonance, Ricardo Garduno, Edit Select and Kaiserdisco.
