"Girls Talk" is a stand-alone single released by alternative rock band Garbage for Record Store Day 2014, backed with the b-side "Time Will Destroy Everything". Both tracks would be remastered and included on Garbage's seventh studio album No Gods No Masters in 2021.
Developed from a long gestating song idea, "Girls Talk" was originally known "Girls Talk Shit" and was written by the band for inclusion on their 2007 greatest hits set Absolute Garbage. [1] Butch Vig described the original sessions for the song as "pretty cool sounding, lots of fast pizzicato guitars and cellos". [2]
The track was first teased on September 28, 2011, in a short video titled "GirlMaskScooters" [3] but wasn't released until 2014. The newly recorded take of "Girls Talk" features vocals from The Distillers singer Brody Dalle and Eric Avery on bass guitar. It was engineered and mixed by Billy Bush. Earlier in 2014, Garbage vocalist Shirley Manson also featured on Brody Dalle's single "Meet the Foetus / Oh The Joy". [4]
"Time Will Destroy Everything" was first conceived during the sessions for 2012's Not Your Kind of People and used as an intro-tape on the band's accompanying world tour. [5] Before its release as b-side of the "Girls Talk" vinyl, a portion of the song was also used in the credits of the live DVD One Mile High... Live .
Manson described it as her "soul song", being "a person who ruminates on death and destruction". [6] Guitarist Steve Marker came up with the instrumental, which according to Manson "sounded like the future, as if from a sci-fi movie like Blade Runner or something" and inspired her to write an "anthem about how we shouldn't sweat all the stupid shit in life. It's so immaterial, so inconsequential. Your lifespan is ticking out on you as you speak. Because it's a truism that time will destroy everything, right? It's just basic logic."
"Girls Talk" is the third Record Store Day release issued by Garbage, following their previous years' cover version of "Because the Night" recorded with Screaming Females, [7] and "Blood for Poppies"" [8] /"Battle In Me" [9] in 2012. The cover art was developed by Ryan Corey at Smog Design from a photo music video director Sophie Muller had taken of graffiti four years prior. [10] The "Girls Talk" single was pressed to 10" green vinyl, limited to 4,000 units, [11] backed with "Time Will Destroy Everything", however in the United Kingdom black vinyls were also pressed. [12] In the United States, "Girls Talk" was listed as a 'Record Store Day First' release. [13] On May 6, the single was made available on digital platforms.
In 2021, both "Girls Talk" and "Time Will Destroy Everything" would be remastered and included on the deluxe edition bonus disc of Garbage's seventh album, No Gods No Masters . [14]
A music video for "Girls Talk" was uploaded on the band's YouTube channel and premiered on Stereogum on May 4, 2014. [15] It was shot by Vig and edited by Sophie Muller. [16] The black-and-white video features Manson and Dalle recording vocals for the track in studio.

Garbage is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. The band's line-up—consisting of Scottish singer Shirley Manson (vocals) and American musicians Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig —has remained unchanged since its inception. All four members are involved in the songwriting and production process. Garbage has sold over 17 million albums worldwide.
Beautiful Garbage is the third studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on October 1, 2001, on Mushroom Records worldwide, with the North American release on Interscope Records the following day. Marking a departure from the sound the band had established on their first two releases, the album was written and recorded over the course of a year, when lead singer Shirley Manson chronicled their efforts weekly online, becoming one of the first high-profile musicians to keep an Internet blog. The album expanded on the band's musical variety, with stronger melodies, more direct lyrics, and sounds mixing rock with electronica, new wave, hip hop, and girl groups.
Brody Dalle is an Australian singer, songwriter, and musician. She began playing music in her adolescence and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18, where she founded the punk rock band The Distillers. The group released three albums before disbanding in 2006. She began another project, Spinnerette, which released an eponymous album in 2009. In 2014, she released Diploid Love, her first album under her solo name.
Bleed Like Me is the fourth studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released worldwide on April 11, 2005, through Warner Music imprint A&E Records, with a North American release on Geffen Records the following day. For this album, the band chose a straight rock sound reminiscent of their live performances instead of the electronica that permeated their previous album Beautiful Garbage (2001). The first recording sessions took place in March 2003, but were mostly unproductive due to passive aggression between band members and a general lack of direction. As they struggled to record the album, Garbage quietly split for four months starting in October 2003. They reunited under producer John King in Los Angeles and, following a guest appearance by Dave Grohl on "Bad Boyfriend", they found a renewed focus on production. Garbage recruited drummer Matt Walker and bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen for new recording sessions and completed the album by late 2004.
"Sex Is Not the Enemy" is a song by American alternative rock band Garbage, released as the second single from their fourth album Bleed Like Me (2005) in the UK.
"Queer" is a song by American rock band Garbage from their self-titled debut studio album (1995). The song started as a demo during sessions between band members Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker, and finished after singer Shirley Manson joined the band. Manson rewrote the sexualized lyrics to be more ambiguous, and rearranged the song into a subdued trip hop and rock crossover composition.
"Because the Night" is a rock song written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith that was first released in 1978 as a single from the Patti Smith Group album Easter. This version rose to No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as No. 5 in the United Kingdom, and helped propel sales of Easter to mainstream success.
Absolute Garbage is a greatest hits album by American rock band Garbage. It was released worldwide on July 23, 2007 through Warner Music imprint A&E Records with a North American release through Almo Sounds, Geffen Records, and Universal Music Enterprises the following day. The compilation was issued while the band was on hiatus following a one-off reformation to perform at a benefit concert early in the year.
"Supervixen" is an alternative rock song written and performed by alternative rock band Garbage and is the opening track on their self-titled debut studio album (1995). The song was titled after Russ Meyer's 1975 sexploitation film Supervixens but was influenced by Pier Paolo Pasolini's period horror art film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, which had been playing on a monitor above the soundboard at Smart Studios when the band were working on it.
"Tell Me Where It Hurts" is the 2007 lead single from alternative rock band Garbage's career-spanning greatest hits album Absolute Garbage, and was released as a physical single by A&E Records in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and as a digital single or airplay-only release in other worldwide territories.
Not Your Kind of People is the fifth studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on May 11, 2012, through the band's own record label, Stunvolume. The album marks the return of the band after a seven-year hiatus that started with previous album Bleed Like Me. Guitarist Duke Erikson said at the launch of the record that "working with Garbage again was very instinctual. Like getting on a bicycle...with three other people." The band emphasized that they did not want to reinvent themselves, but embrace their sonic identity, reflecting their classic sound whilst updating it for 2012. Although Shirley Manson's morose dispositions have a presence on the record, many of the songs share a more optimistic outlook on life, influenced by some of Manson's personal experiences during their hiatus.
"Blood for Poppies" is the 2012 lead single from alternative rock band Garbage's fifth studio album Not Your Kind of People, released to radio worldwide and as the band's Record Store Day single in the United States.
"Battle in Me" is a song from rock band Garbage's fifth studio album Not Your Kind of People. It was released as the lead single to promote the album in United Kingdom. "Battle in Me" preceded the band's underplayed headliner concert in London, and served as the band's Record Store Day 2012 release in Europe.
"Big Bright World" is the second worldwide single released from alternative rock band Garbage's fifth studio album, Not Your Kind of People. The single was issued as a digital download in Australia and New Zealand in June 2012, and was sent to radio stations across United Kingdom and Europe the following month.
"Control" is the second North American and fourth overall single released from alternative rock band Garbage's fifth studio album, Not Your Kind of People, and was sent to radio stations across the United States in October 2012.
Diploid Love is the debut solo album Brody Dalle, frontwoman of the Distillers. The digital download was released on 28 April 2014 in the United States and 29 April in Canada, followed by the CD and vinyl record set on 19 May. The lead single, "Meet the Foetus/Oh the Joy", was streamed for free on SoundCloud on 9 February before being released to iTunes on 17 February.
"The Chemicals" is a single released by rock band Garbage for Record Store Day 2015. It features Brian Aubert on co-vocals. The song was the first track recorded by the band during sessions for their sixth album, Strange Little Birds. Drummer Butch Vig described "The Chemicals" as "a very dense Garbage track".
"Destroying Angels" is a 2018 stand-alone single released by alternative rock band Garbage with John Doe and Exene Cervenka of the American punk rock band X. The song was written and recorded for 2018's Black Friday Record Store Day event in North America, with a digital release worldwide the following year.
No Gods No Masters is the seventh studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on June 11, 2021, through the band's own label Stunvolume. The album was distributed worldwide by Infectious Music and BMG and preceded by the singles "The Men Who Rule the World", "No Gods No Masters" and "Wolves".
Anthology is a greatest hits album by American rock band Garbage, released on October 28, 2022, through Stunvolume and BMG. It is the band's third overall and second international greatest hits album. The album includes remastered versions of 35 tracks, among hit singles and fan favourites, as well as rare track "Witness to Your Love", a song recorded in 2008 for inclusion in the Give Listen Help charity compilation.
Those of you in the UK and possibly Europe who received black vinyl instead of green vinyl, please know we are looking into this issue and are as confused about this turn of events as you are. We take this kind of thing VERY seriously and are determined to get to the bottom of it.
