The Glencairn whisky glass is a style of glass intended for drinking whisky, developed and produced by Glencairn Crystal Ltd, in East Kilbride, a town near Glasgow, Scotland since 1981; originally designed by Raymond Davidson, managing director of the company. [1] The shape of the glass is derived from the traditional nosing copitas used in whisky labs around Scotland. [2] The glass design was concluded with the aid of master blenders from five of the largest whisky companies in Scotland.[ citation needed ] The glass first came into production in 2001. Since then, additional mini-Glencairns and Canadian Glencairns [3] were introduced. The Glencairn glass is made in Poland. [4]
The original Glencairn glass is approximately 115 mm (4+1⁄2 in) in height and has been available in three variations: 24% lead crystal, lead-free crystal, and soda-lime glass.[ citation needed ] The vast majority of glasses in circulation are of the lead-free crystal variety. The soda-lime variation was discontinued in 2008. [5] Mini Glencairns look the same as regular Glencairns but are smaller and used at distilleries for serving samples. Canadian Glencairns are the largest of the three, and were made for Canadian whiskey that is usually served on the rocks (with ice). Therefore, the Canadian Glencairn has a wider bowl and has a 350 ml (11+3⁄4 US fl oz) capacity.
The capacity of a typical Glencairn whisky glass is approximately 175 ml (6 US fl oz), and it is intended to hold approximately 50 ml (1.7 US fl oz) of liquid.[ citation needed ]
In 2006 the glass won the Queen's Award for innovation. [6] [7] [8]
The Glencairn glass is not the only glass on the market that is designed specifically for drinking whisky. (For example, Riedel and Norlan Glass also manufacture such glassware.) While there are numerous styles of such glasses available, the Glencairn is the first style to be endorsed by the Scotch Whisky Association, and to be used by every whisky company in Scotland and Ireland. Old fashioned tumblers, snifters, and nosing copitas are other types of glasses that are commonly used for drinking whisky. The traditional style of whisky glass is a cut glass crystal (also known as an "old fashioned glass", "rocks glass" or "lowball glass" in the United States), an iconic design that remains the most commonly used type of whisky glass. However, a tumbler does not hold and focus the aromas as much for the experience of the drinker as the other styles, which curve inwards towards the top of the glass. While not all drinkers may find the strong aroma produced by such glasses desirable, inward-curved glasses are often preferred by connoisseurs who consider the aroma especially important to the experience of a whiskey.
The Tom Collins is a Collins cocktail made from gin, lemon juice, sugar, and carbonated water. This "gin and sparkling lemonade" drink is typically served in a Collins glass over ice with a cherry garnish. A non-alcoholic "Collins mix" mixer is produced, enjoyed by some as a soft drink.

A standard drink or unit of alcohol is a measure of alcohol consumption representing a fixed amount of pure alcohol. The design is essentially English, from the late 18th or 19th century. Plain glass versions are lowball glasses.

A champagne glass is stemware designed for champagne and other sparkling wines. The two most common forms are the flute and coupe, both stemmed; holding the glass by the stem prevents warming the drink. Ravenhead Glass was a glassworks near Ravenhead Colliery, Lancashire, North West England. It was founded in 1850 by Frances Dixon and John Merson after a move from their earlier (1842) factory at Thatto Heath near St Helens. In 1852, this factory was sold to the Pilkington Brothers and Frances Dixon then acquired a 13-acre (53,000 m2) site at Ravenhead, building a new gas-powered glassworks.
A Seven and Seven or 7 and 7 is a highball cocktail, a mixed alcoholic drink containing Seagram's Seven Crown, a blended whiskey, and 7 Up, a lemon-lime soft drink. It is typically served with ice. It was one of the most popular drinks in the United States during the 1970s.
