The Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research is an international award that recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of entrepreneurship research. Established in 1996, it aims to promote the advancement of knowledge in entrepreneurship and to encourage research efforts in the field. [1]

The Prize

The recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research is awarded a prize sum of 100,000 Euros. [1] [2] Recipients also receive a reproduction of Swedish Sculpter Carl Milles' The Hand of God. [3]

The History of the Award

During the Internal Conference for Small Business's World Conference in 1996, a proposal was made to create an award to recognize excellence in research in the field of entrepreneurship and small business. [4] [5] The award aimed to emphasize the importance of entrepreneurship research, stimulate and promote further research in the field, and disseminate state-of-the-art research among scholars, practitioners, and small business developers. [4] The International Award for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Research was established in that same year in 1996. [4] In 2008 the award was renamed the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, and the monetary prize was increased in value to €100,000. [4]

Award Process and Selection

The Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research has been considered the premier prize in its field. [6] [7] [4] [8] [ by whom? ] The award is presented annually with a ceremony typically held in Stockholm with the award being presented by the Minister of Sweden's Ministry of Enterprise and Education. [1] [9] The current awardee presents a prize lecture after receiving the award. [10] [5]

The Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of entrepreneurship and small business development. The primary criterion for receiving the award is exceptional scientific achievement in entrepreneurship theory, methodology, and/or empirical research. [11] The evaluation considers the following aspects:

  1. The originality and innovativeness of the research.
  2. The impact of the research on the scientific community and the advancement of entrepreneurship as a field of study.
  3. The practical relevance of the research for policymakers, educators, and practitioners in the field of entrepreneurship. [4]

Each year, leading entrepreneurship scholars worldwide are invited to nominate candidates. A Prize Committee, consisting of six to eight members who are full professors at Swedish universities working on small business and entrepreneurship issues, selects the winner. [12]

Award Founders

The award was founded two non-profit research organizations, the Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum and the Research Institute of Industrial Economics (IFN) [1] Vinnova, the Swedish governmental agency responsible for promoting innovation was added later as an award sponsor. [1] [5]

David Bruce Audretsch is an American economist. He is a distinguished professor at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University and also serves as director of the SPEA International Office, Ameritech Chair of Economic Development, and director of SPEA's Institute for Development Strategies (IDS). He is co-founder and co-editor of Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal, and also works as a consultant to the United Nations, the World Bank, the OECD, the EU Commission, and the U.S. Department of State. He was the director of the Entrepreneurship, Growth and Public Policy Group at the Max Planck Institute of Economics in Germany from 2003 to 2009. The Tepper School of Business is the business school of Carnegie Mellon University. It is located in the university's 140-acre (0.57 km2) campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Steven Irwin Klepper was an American economics professor, researcher and author. Klepper was the Arthur Arton Hamerschlag Professor of Economics and Social Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was recognized for his teaching and research related to the integration of traditional economic models with evolutionary theory, and finding connections between the study of entrepreneurship and mainstream economics. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. Klepper authored more than 100 peer reviewed articles generating more than 10,000 citations. He is listed in the top five percent of most influential economist authors in the world according to IDEAS/RePEc.

Per Davidsson is an entrepreneurship professor that holds Swedish and Australian citizenship. He is currently a professor of entrepreneurship at Jönköping International Business School and Queensland University of Technology Business School where he served as the Talbot Family Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship and Founding Director of the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research (ACE) during 2010–2018. He serves on the editorial boards for several journals and has participated in many research programs including the Comprehensive Australian Study of Entrepreneurial Emergence. On March 22, 2023 he was named the 2023 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research.

The Hand of God is one of the last works of the Swedish sculptor Carl Milles, created to honor the Swedish entrepreneur C. E. Johansson, who revolutionized precision measuring of industrial parts. The original casting stands in Johansson's hometown of Eskilstuna, Sweden.

He has studied agents of innovation, mainly entrepreneurs but also facilitators and intrapreneurs.

Professor Colette Henry, FRSA, FAcSS is an Irish social scientist and international scholar who is Head of the Department of Business Studies at Dundalk Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the founding editor of The International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship.

Candida Brush is the Franklin W. Olin Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College. She is one of the founders of the Diana Project at Babson. As a founding scholar of the Diana Project, she was awarded the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research in 2007. She researches women's entrepreneurship.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Saras Sarasvathy</span>

Saras D. Sarasvathy is an American entrepreneurship professor and recipient of the 2022 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. She is currently the Paul M. Hammaker Professor in Business Administration at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and the Jamuna Raghavan Chair Professor in Entrepreneurship, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. She serves on the editorial boards or as associate editor of several academic journals as well as serving as an outside director to the public company LendingTree. She is best known for her conception of Effectuation, a theory of Entrepreneurial action based on the study of Expert Entrepreneurs. Her award-winning journal article - "Causation and Effectuation: Toward a Theoretical Shift from Economic Inevitability to Entrepreneurial Contingency" is one of the most highly cited academic articles about entrepreneurship of all time.
