The Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF) is a political organization which has been the ruling party of Zimbabwe since independence in 1980. The party was led for many years under Robert Mugabe, first as Prime Minister with the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and then as President from 1987 after the merger with the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) and retaining the name ZANU–PF, until 2017, when he was removed as leader.
Welshman Ncube is a Zimbabwean lawyer, businessman and politician. He is the former President of Zimbabwean political party Movement for Democratic Change – Ncube. He currently serves as MDC Alliance's third Vice President. He is a practicing lawyer in the firm Mathonsi Ncube Law Chambers, where he is the senior partner at their Bulawayo offices. He also runs a number of business ventures, including a farm in the Midlands Province.
Tendai Laxton Biti is a Zimbabwean politician who served as Zimbabwe's Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2013. He is the current Member of Parliament for Harare East Constituency and the second Vice President of Movement for Democratic Change. He was the Secretary-General of the Movement for Democratic Change and the subsequent Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai (MDC-T) political parties and a Member of Parliament for Harare East until he was expelled from the party and recalled from parliament in mid-2014,before winning the seat again in 2018.
Nelson Chamisa is a Zimbabwean politician who is the President of the Movement for Democratic Change. and previously served as Member of the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe from Kuwadzana, Harare. Chamisa was the MDC Alliance's candidate for president in the 2018 general election, having previously been the leader of the party's youth wing.
The prime minister of Zimbabwe was a political office in the government of Zimbabwe that existed on two separate occasions. The first person to hold the position was Robert Mugabe from 1980 to 1987 following independence from the United Kingdom. He took office when Southern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zimbabwe on 18 April 1980. This position was abolished when the constitution was amended in 1987 and Mugabe became president of Zimbabwe, replacing Canaan Banana as the head of state while also remaining the head of government. The office of prime minister was restored in 2009 and held by Morgan Tsvangirai until the position was again abolished by the 2013 Constitution of Zimbabwe.
Thokozani Khuphe is a Zimbabwean politician, trade unionist and the President of the MDC-T breakaway faction of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). She was Deputy Prime Minister 2009-13.
Patrick Antony Chinamasa is a Zimbabwean politician who served in the government of Zimbabwe as Minister of Finance and Economic Planning. He briefly served as Minister of Cyber Security, Threat Detection and Mitigation from October 2017 to November 2017. He made headlines across Zimbabwe in June 2018 after officially opening a rubbish metal bin fully strapped with ribbons. A move seen by many people as ridiculous. Previously he served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.
Promise Mkwananzi is a Zimbabwean politician. He is the ex-President of the Zimbabwe National Student Union (ZINASU) 2006 to 2007. In his career as a student leader, MKwananzi was expelled from the University of Zimbabwe. He was also arrested numerous times for leading students protests against the government's unjust education policies. He was elected into the MDC youth assembly as secretary general and appointed a member of the national executive committee as secretary for youth affairs, making him the youngest national executive member in the party's history at 28. A once close ally of Morgan Tsvangirai, Mkwananzi split with Tsvangirai in 2014 and went with former Finance Minister Tendai Biti' renewal group. He split further with Biti and went with Elton Mangoma to form the Renewal Democrats of Zimbabwe where he was briefly Secretary General before he left the party to joining social movement Tajamuka in 2016. with the then party did his education at the Utrecht University in Netherlands where he attained a bachelor's degree in political science and international relations. He also attained a masters in international development studies. Mkwananzi is also a fierce advocate of youth autonomy, arguing that the youth should be at the forefront of both the revolution and decision making though financial scandals below seat his image a heavy blow. He is widely known for his eye for an eye call in which he called upon the youth to retaliate violence from ZANU PF youths. Mkwananzi lives in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Kembo Dugish Campbell Mohadi is one of two Vice-Presidents of Zimbabwe since 28 December 2017. He briefly served as the Minister of Defence, Security and War Veterans in 2017. Previously he was Minister of State for National Security in the President's Office from 2015 to 2017 and Minister of Home Affairs from 2002 to 2015.
The second round of voting in the Zimbabwean presidential election of 2008 was held between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai after the first round failed to produce a 50% majority for either candidate. The election process was marred by violence against and intimidation of voters and party workers, which eventually led to the withdrawal of Tsvangirai from the poll. This left Mugabe as the winner of, effectively, a one-candidate election.
The 2008–2009 Zimbabwean political negotiations between the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, its small splinter group, the Movement for Democratic Change – Mutambara, and the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front were intended to negotiate an end to the partisan violence and human rights violations in Zimbabwe and create a framework for a power-sharing executive government between the two parties. These negotiations followed the 2008 presidential election, in which Mugabe was controversially re-elected, as well as the 2008 parliamentary election, in which the MDC won a majority in the House of Assembly.
The 9th Parliament of Zimbabwe was a meeting of the Zimbabwean Parliament, composed of the Senate and the House of Assembly. It met in Harare over five sessions from 25 August 2008 to 27 June 2013. Its membership was set by the disputed 2008 Zimbabwean general election, which resulted in a ZANU–PF majority in the Senate and Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai control of the House of Assembly. Political negotiations resulted in the 2009 Government of National Unity, a coalition government composed of ZANU–PF, the MDC–T, and the MDC–M.
The Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai (MDC–T) was a center-left political party and was the main opposition party in the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe ahead of the 2018 elections. After the split of the original Movement for Democratic Change in 2005, the MDC–T remained the major opposition faction, while a smaller faction, the Movement for Democratic Change – Ncube, or MDC–N, was led by Welshman Ncube. The two parties re-united in 2018 under the original name, the Movement for Democratic Change.
The Movement for Democratic Change – Ncube (MDC–N) was a Zimbabwean political party led by politician and attorney Welshman Ncube. It was founded in 2005 when the Movement for Democratic Change split apart and in the 2008 general election, it was known as the Movement for Democratic Change – Mutambara (MDC–M) in contrast to the larger Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai (MDC–T). The MDC–N and the MDC–T operated as separate opposition parties until their re-unification in 2018. The re-united party now operates under the original name, the MDC.
In June 2010, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai reshuffled the portion of the cabinet appointed by his party (MDC-T), within the Government of National Unity that was formed on 13 February 2009. Ministers appointed by the other two parties were not reshuffled.
General elections were held in Zimbabwe on 31 July 2013. Incumbent President Robert Mugabe was re-elected, whilst his ZANU–PF party won a two-thirds majority in the House of Assembly.
Seiso Moyo was a Zimbabwean politician, who served as deputy minister of agriculture from 11 October 2011 to 21 December 2012.
Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change - Tsvangirai, announced his party's shadow cabinet on 18 September 2013. It is the first time since 2009 that MDC-T formed a cabinet in opposition, as it had been part of a government of national unity with the ZANU-PF from that time until the end of the coalition in 2013.
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) was a political party in Zimbabwe. It was launched in September 2015 after a faction broke away from the Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai. At their breakaway in 2014 they initially called themselves Movement for Democratic Change – Renewal. The president of the party was Tendai Biti, a former minister of finance of Zimbabwe serving in the Morgan Tsvangirai government 2009–2013. The party split in September 2017 over Tendai Biti and other party officials joining the MDC Alliance electoral bloc, with a breakaway faction being led by Lucia Matibenga in an interim capacity. After the 2018 election, the Tendai Biti-led faction of the PDP re-united with other splinter groups of the original MDC to form a single party under the original name Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
