Elias Mudzuri is a Zimbabwean engineer and politician. Mudzuri was elected to a four-year term as Mayor of Harare,Zimbabwe,a city of 1.8 million,in March 2002. He was Acting president of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T).
Trained in Sierre Leone as a civil engineer,Mudzuri is a Fellow of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers. Before becoming mayor,he had worked in local government for 14 years. He is married to Jabu Mudzuri,a Swazi national, and the couple have five children. Mudzuri was a Mason Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University and also holds Masters in Public Administration from the university. [1]
Mudzuri is a member of the Movement for Democratic Change, the opposition party led by Morgan Tsvangirai. His election as mayor came about after Harare's citizens sued the national government for autonomous elections, required by the nation's constitution but never held. From 1999 forward,President Mugabe had appointed ministers of the national government to run local government in Harare, which was illegal under the constitution.
On 15 September 2020,Mudzuri tested positive for COVID-19. [2]
Mudzuri defeated ZANU-PF candidate Amos Midzi in the March 2002 mayoral election by a large margin, receiving 262,275 votes against 56,796 votes for Midzi. [3]
Almost immediately after that election,a power struggle between Minister of Local Government Ignatius Chombo and Mudzuri ensued. Chombo blocked badly needed funds for local improvements and development. In March 2003,young Zanu-PF supporters toyi-toyi'd around Town House –Harare's city hall –chanting:"Mudzuri should be beaten up,he must be killed and he must be removed."
On 11 January 2003 the national police assaulted and arrested Mudzuri while he met with Harare residents. More than 20 city officials and residents were held at that time.
At the end of April 2003 the national government suspended Mudzuri from his position as Executive Mayor without pay,and locked him out of his office. His deputy mayor,Sekesai Makwavarara, was appointed as acting mayor by the central government.
On 10 February 2009,Mudzuri was selected by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to sit as minister of Energy and Power Development in the unity coalition cabinet.

The prime minister of Zimbabwe was a political office in the government of Zimbabwe that existed on two occasions. The first person to hold the position was Robert Mugabe from 1980 to 1987 following independence from the United Kingdom. He took office when Southern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zimbabwe on 18 April 1980. This position was abolished when the constitution was amended in 1987 and Mugabe became president of Zimbabwe, replacing Canaan Banana as the head of state while also remaining the head of government. The office of prime minister was restored in 2009 and held by Morgan Tsvangirai until the position was again abolished by the 2013 Constitution of Zimbabwe.
Amos Bernard Muvengwa Midzi was a Zimbabwean politician who served in the Cabinet successively as Minister of Energy and Power Development and Minister of Mines and Mining Development from 2002 to 2009.

The second round of voting in the Zimbabwean presidential election of 2008 was held between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai after the first round failed to produce a 50% majority for either candidate. The election process was marred by violence against and intimidation of voters and party workers, which eventually led to the withdrawal of Tsvangirai from the poll. This left Mugabe as the winner of,effectively,a one-candidate election.
Muchadeyi Masunda is a Zimbabwean businessman and politician. He was the mayor of Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, elected in 2008.
The 2008–2009 Zimbabwean political negotiations between the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, its small splinter group, the Movement for Democratic Change –Mutambara, and the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union –Patriotic Front were intended to negotiate an end to the partisan violence and human rights violations in Zimbabwe and create a framework for a power-sharing executive government between the two parties. These negotiations followed the 2008 presidential election,in which Mugabe was controversially re-elected,as well as the 2008 parliamentary election,in which the MDC won a majority in the House of Assembly.
Before its split in 2005,the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was a Zimbabwean political party organised under the leadership of Morgan Tsvangirai. The MDC was formed in 1999 as an opposition party to President Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union –Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF). The MDC was made up of many civic groups who campaigned for the "No" vote in the 2000 constitutional referendum, which would limit a president's service to two terms, before the introduction of a prime minister,as well as giving legal immunities to the State. However,as the term limit was not retroactive,Mugabe could still have maintained the presidency for two more terms. The most controversial part of the constitution was the land reform policies. It stated that,as in the Lancaster House Agreement,Britain would fund land reform from white settlers to landless black peasants. If Britain failed to compensate the farmers, the government would take the farms, without compensation. The party split over whether to contest the 2005 senate election, into the Movement for Democratic Change –Tsvangirai (MDC-T),the larger party led by Morgan Tsvangirai, and the Movement for Democratic Change –Ncube,a smaller faction then led by Arthur Mutambara and later led by Welshman Ncube. However, the two factions formed an electoral pact for the 2018 Zimbabwean general election called the MDC Alliance and re-united under the original name, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC),in September 2018.
The Movement for Democratic Change –Tsvangirai (MDC–T) is a centre-left political party and was the main opposition party in the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe ahead of the 2018 elections. After the split of the original Movement for Democratic Change in 2005,the MDC–T remained the major opposition faction, while a smaller faction, the Movement for Democratic Change –Ncube,or MDC–N,was led by Welshman Ncube.
Morgan Richard Tsvangirai was a Zimbabwean politician who was Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 2009 to 2013. He was President of the Movement for Democratic Change, and later the Movement for Democratic Change –Tsvangirai (MDC–T),and a key figure in the opposition to former President Robert Mugabe.

During her tenure on the Mabvuku city council, she served under deputy mayor Elias Mudzuri until she was appointed acting mayor following Mudzuri's forced deposition by the national government. Harare Metropolitan Province,is a province in northeastern Zimbabwe that comprises Harare, the country's capital and largest city, and three other municipalities,Chitungwiza,Epworth and Ruwa. Because of Zimbabwe's dire economic situation, the elections were expected to provide incumbent President Robert Mugabe with his toughest electoral challenge to date.
