The Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award is one of the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards and honors feature film directorial debuts. Named after Bingham Ray since 2013, the breakthrough director award was first given in 1991 as the Open Palm Award, with Jennie Livingston being the first recipient of the award, for her work in Paris Is Burning. From 1991 to 1996 only the winner was announced, since 1997, a set of 5 to 6 nominees is presented annually.

The Lobster is a 2015 black comedy drama film directed and co-produced by Yorgos Lanthimos, from a screenplay by Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou. It stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, Ariane Labed, Angeliki Papoulia, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux, Michael Smiley, and Ben Whishaw. In the film, new bachelor David (Farrell) moves into a hotel with other singletons, whom are all obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or will be transformed into animals.

The 25th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on November 30, 2015. The nominees were announced on October 22, 2015. The ceremony was hosted by Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer.

<i>The Favourite</i> 2018 film by Yorgos Lanthimos

The Favourite is a 2018 period black comedy film co-produced and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, from a screenplay by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. Set in early 18th century Great Britain, the film's plot examines the relationship between cousins Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, and Abigail Masham as they vie to be court favourite of Queen Anne. Principal photography for the British-Irish-American production lasted from March to May 2017 and took place at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire and at Hampton Court Palace.

It stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as nineteenth-century wickies in turmoil after being marooned at a remote New England outpost by an intense storm. The film has defied categorization in media, and interpretations of The Lighthouse range from a horror film, a psychological thriller, a survival film, and a character study, among others.

The Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Series – Long Form is one of the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards and honors series with episodes over 40 minutes. Until 2019, the award honored a new "continuing or limited series with episodes running 30 minutes or longer". It was first awarded in 2015.

The 32nd Annual Gotham Awards, presented by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, will be held on November 28, 2022. The nominees were announced on October 25, 2022 by Angelica Ross and Jeffrey Sharp. Actors Adam Sandler and Michelle Williams, filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, film executives Jason Cassidy and Peter Kujawski, entrepreneur Don Katz, and the cast of Fire Island will receive tribute awards. Additionally, actor and filmmaker Sidney Poitier will be posthumously recognized with the Icon Tribute award.
