Great Ditch is a drainage ditch that drains areas of the Pigeon Swamp State Park in New Jersey in the United States.

Course

Great Ditch starts at 40°23′5″N74°28′57″W / 40.38472°N 74.48250°W / 40.38472; -74.48250 , [1] in the Pigeon Swamp State Park. It flows west, crossing Fresh Ponds Road and Route 130 before joining another stream at 40°23′39″N74°30′27″W / 40.39417°N 74.50750°W / 40.39417; -74.50750 [1] which drains into the Lawrence Brook.

Purpose

This canal's purpose is to drain sections of the Pigeon Swamp to prevent flooding of Deans Rhode Hall Road, which passes through the swamp.

It is adjacent to the Delaware and Raritan Canal. It covers 3,037 acres (12.29 km2). The reservoir plan was to flood the Six Mile Run watershed. The Six Mile Run is a tributary of the Millstone River that, with its tributaries, drains a large area in central Franklin Township, Somerset County, New Jersey and western portions of North Brunswick and South Brunswick Townships in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It derives its name, along with other streams, from the distance early surveyors estimated it was from the point where the historic King's Highway left the Raritan River at New Brunswick to the point the roadway crossed the stream. The estimates were not very accurate but the stream names have remained in use ever since.

Pigeon Swamp State Park is a 1,078-acre (4.36 km2) New Jersey state park located on Deans Rhode Hall Road in South Brunswick, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It is an undeveloped park, with a mix of habitats including open ponds and uplands hardwood forests. It also includes a good example of an inner coastal plain lowland deciduous hardwood forest. At one time, it was a major nesting site for passenger pigeons before they became extinct. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in December 1976.

Black Brook rises at the north east base of Long Hill, Chatham Township, Morris County, flows westerly along the hill, by a course of 7 or 8 miles to its recipient in Morris Township, New Jersey. Due to the chemical fertilizer usage in nearby areas, Black Brook has the second worst water quality after Loantaka Brook.
