The Great Northern P-1 was a class of 15 4-8-2 "Mountain" type steam locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1914 and operated by the Great Northern Railway.
The P-1s were at first assigned to pull passenger trains, but were proven to be too slow and were reassigned to freight service. Between June and November 1928, they were all rebuilt by the GN's Superior, Great Falls, and Hillyard Shops to Q-2 Class 2-10-2s. [1]
Neither the P-1s nor the Q-2s have survived into preservation today. Retirement started on July 16, 1953 and were all retired by April 1958.

The New York Central Railroad (NYC) called the 4-8-2 type of steam locomotive the Mohawk type. It was known as the Mountain type on other roads, but the New York Central did not see the name as fitting on its famous Water Level Route. Instead, it picked the name of one of those rivers its rails followed, the Mohawk River, to name its newest type of locomotive. Despite the more common name, the 4-8-2 was actually suited in many ways more to flatland running than slow mountain slogging, with its 4-wheel leading truck for stability at speed. However, the L1s and L2s were unstable at higher speeds due to the lack of effective cross-balancing, making the 4-wheel leading truck simply a better distributor of the locomotives weight; the L1s and L2s were consequently limited to 60 mph (97 km/h), though this issue was resolved for the L3s and L4s using data gathered from two experimental L-2s.

This allows a larger firebox and boiler than the 4-4-0 configuration.
A 2-8-8-2, in the Whyte notation for describing steam locomotive wheel arrangements, is an articulated locomotive with a two-wheel leading truck, two sets of eight driving wheels, and a two-wheel trailing truck. The equivalent UIC classification is, refined to Mallet locomotives, (1'D)D1'. These locomotives usually employ the Mallet principles of articulation—with the rear engine rigidly attached to the boiler and the front engine free to rotate—and compounding. The 2-8-8-2 was a design largely limited to American locomotive builders. The last 2-8-8-2 was retired in 1962 from the N&W's roster, two years past the ending of steam though steam was still used on steel mill lines and other railroads until 1983.

A class of locomotives is a group of locomotives built to a common design, typically for a single railroad or railway. Often members of a particular class had detail variations between individual examples, and these could lead to subclasses. Sometimes technical alterations move a locomotive from one class to another. Different railways had different systems, and sometimes one railway used different systems at different times and for different purposes, or applied those classifications inconsistently. The Great Northern Z-1 was a class of ten electric locomotives built for the Great Northern Railway They were used to work the route through the second Cascade Tunnel. They were built between 1926–1928 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, with Westinghouse electrics, and stayed in service until dieselisation in 1956. Each was of 1,830 horsepower (1,360 kW) with a 1-D-1 wheel arrangement, although they were always used in coupled pairs.

The Great Northern Q-1 was a class of 30 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type steam locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923 and operated by the Great Northern Railway pulling freight until the late 1950s.
The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway's Classes J-1 and J-2 were two classes of 4-8-2 steam locomotives introduced on the Chesapeake & Ohio for hauling heavy passenger trains over the Allegheny Mountains. The J-1s were the first 4-8-2s in the United States and earned the wheel arrangement the name of "Mountains" after the C&O's Mountain Divisions over which they would traverse.
