Great Renewed National Alliance (Spanish : Gran Alianza Nacional Renovada), also known as GANAR Alliance (Spanish : Alianza GANAR) or by its acronym GANAR (literally "WIN"), is a political coalition of opposition parties, formed in 2017 in Paraguay by members of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, the Revolutionary Febrerista Party, the Progressive Democratic Party, the Guasú Front, and others. [1] [2] In the 2018 general elections, it was number 5 on the voting list, and supported Efraín Alegre of the PLRA and Leonardo Rubín of the Guasú Front for president and vice president, respectively. [3] [4]

The campaign leader of the Alliance was the liberal Carlos Mateo Balmelli, who was a past rival of Alegre in the PLRA internal elections. [5]

Fernando Lugo, elected President of Paraguay in 2008, was impeached and removed from office by the Congress of Paraguay in June 2012. On 21 June the Chamber of Deputies voted 76 to 1 to impeach Lugo, and the Senate removed him from office the following day, by 39 votes to 4, resulting in Vice President Federico Franco, who had broken with Lugo, becoming President. Lugo contends he was denied due process because he did not have enough time to prepare a defense. A number of Latin American governments declared the proceeding was effectively a coup d'état. Lugo himself formally accepted the impeachment, but called it a "parliamentary coup".

Pedro Efraín Alegre Sasiain is a Paraguayan politician, lawyer, and university professor. President of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA), Alegre served as president of the Chamber of Deputies between 2000 and 2001; Senator in 2008; and Minister of Public Work and Communications between 2008 and 2011 in the Fernando Lugo cabinet. He was a presidential candidate in the 2013, 2018, and 2023 general elections, coming second in all three elections and losing to different candidates from the Colorado Party in each of the three elections.

Victor Luís Bernal Garay is a Paraguayan senator for the Colorado Party and the former director of the bi-national hydroelectric enterprise Itaipú. He is an accountant by profession. An official investigation of Bernal's finances began while he was at Itaipú and continued into his years in the Senate. An attempt was made to impeach him, and both he and his wife, María Elizabeth Pleva, spent years engaged in legal battles over charges of embezzlement.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2017 Paraguayan crisis</span>

On 31 March 2017, a series of protests began in Paraguay, during which demonstrators set fire to the Congress building. The demonstrations occurred in response to a constitutional amendment that would permit President Horacio Cartes to run for re-election, a move described by the opposition as "a coup". One protester was killed in Paraguay's capital, Asunción, after being hit by a shotgun blast by police. Several protesters, politicians and journalists, as well as police, were reported injured, including one lower-house deputy who had to undergo surgery after being injured by rubber bullets. On 17 April, President Cartes announced that he was resigning from any possible candidacy for a second presidential term. On 26 April, the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay rejected the proposed constitutional amendment for presidential re-election.

Santiago Peña Palacios is a Paraguayan politician and economist who is the 52nd and current president of Paraguay since 2023. In addition to his political career, Peña has served on leadership boards for the Central Bank of Paraguay and Banco Amambay. He has also taught economics at the Catholic University of Asunción, and has published research papers on monetary policy and finance.

Agreement for Change was a Venezuelan coalition created on June 21, 2018 by former 2018 presidential candidate and Chavismo defector Henri Falcón. The coalition initially integrated seven political parties opposed to the government of Nicolás Maduro. The alliance was committed to what they called the "democratic route" through mechanisms such as voting, dialogue, peaceful protests and the rejection of foreign intervention.
