The Massachusetts gubernatorial election of 2006 was held on November 7, 2006. Incumbent Republican governor Mitt Romney chose to not seek a second term, and the election was won by Democratic former United States Assistant Attorney General Deval Patrick. Patrick became the second African-American governor in the United States since Reconstruction, and the first Democratic governor of Massachusetts since 1991. This is the most recent election in which incumbent governor Charlie Baker did not participate.

He was the first African American Governor of Massachusetts. A Democrat, Patrick served from 1994 to 1997 as the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division under President Bill Clinton. He was briefly a candidate for President of the United States in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Salvatore Francis "Sal" DiMasi is a former Democratic state representative in Massachusetts. The former Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives originally joined the state legislature in 1979, as a member of the Democratic Party. He eventually resigned from this post in January 2009, just six months prior to being indicted on several Federal charges, including conspiracy to defraud the federal government, extortion, mail fraud and wire fraud. DiMasi was found guilty on 7 of 9 federal corruption charges on June 15, 2011. DiMasi is the third consecutive Massachusetts house speaker to be federally indicted.

William Maurice “Mo” Cowan is an American politician and lawyer who served as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from February 1, 2013 to July 16, 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as legal counsel and chief of staff to Governor Deval Patrick. Patrick appointed him on an interim basis to fill the vacancy left by fellow Democrat John Kerry, who resigned to become U.S. Secretary of State. He declined to run in the 2013 special election to complete the remainder of Kerry's term. He was succeeded by fellow Democrat Ed Markey.
