Hannah Nuttall (born 7 July 1997) is a British athlete. She competes in middle-distance and cross-country running events. In 2024, she became British champion in the 5000 metres.

Early life

Nuttall ran as a youngster for Charnwood Athletics club. [1] Nuttall attended Loughborough College and had her first experience of representing Britain at the 2015 junior World Cross Country Championships held in Guiyang, China. [2] A qualified nutritionist, [3] she attended the University of New Mexico, [4] and completed a master's degree at Loughborough University. [5]

Career

In 2021 she won the mixed relay at the 2021 European Cross Country Championships held in Dublin. [6] Shortly afterwards she began to be coached by Helen Clitheroe when she joined Team New Balance Manchester. [7]

In February 2023, Nuttall finished runner-up at the British national indoors championships over 3000m. [8] She was subsequently selected for the Great Britain squad for the 2023 European Indoor Championships held in Istanbul for the 3000m. [9] She qualified for the final in the 3000m. [10] Nuttall ran a personal best time of 8:46.30 as she achieved a fifth-placed finish in the final. [11]

She was selected for the British team for the 2023 European Athletics Team Championships held in Chorzów, Silesia, Poland between 20 and 25 June 2023. [12] It was the second time she had ever ran a 5000m race on the track, and she finished in second position overall in the First Division race, with a time of 15:29:49. [13]

In February 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts, she ran a new personal best over 3000 metres, running 8:45.61. [14] The following week she lowered her 5000m personal best to 15:03.39 in Boston. [15] She finished second at the 2024 British Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham over 3000 metres. [16] [17] She was subsequently selected for the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow where she competed in the women's 3000 metres in which she finished twelfth in the final. [18] [19]

She set a new outdoors personal best over 5000m running 14:57.91 at the Los Angeles Grand Prix on 17 May 2024. [20] The following weekend she lowered that again in Leiden, in the Netherlands, to 14:52.65. [21] She was selected to run the 5000 metres for Britain at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome. [22] In 2024, she became British national champion in the 5000 metres at the 2024 British Athletics Championships in Manchester. [23]

Personal life

Nuttall is the daughter of former athletes Alison Wyeth and John Nuttall. Her brother Luke Nuttall is also an athlete. [24] [25]

Obiri also took world bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2013 and silver in the 10,000 m in 2022. She won the 3,000 metres race at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, claimed silver in 2014, and placed fourth in 2018. She is the 2019 World Cross Country champion. Obiri triumphed in the 2023 Boston Marathon, her second marathon race. She places fifth in the half marathon on the world all-time list.

Eilish McColgan is a Scottish middle- and long-distance runner. She is the 2022 Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres champion with the Games record, and 5000 metres silver medallist. McColgan is a four-time European Championships medallist, winning silver medals for the 5000 m in 2018 and 10,000 m in 2022, bronze in the 5000 m in 2022, and a bronze for the indoor 3000 metres in 2017. She is the European record holder for the 10 km road race, and the British record holder for the 5000 m, 10,000 m, 5 km and half marathon. She also holds the European best in the 10 miles on the roads.

Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the current women’s world record holder for 5,000 m (14:00.21), set at the 2023 final Diamond League event, the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Eugene is also where she won the World Athletics Championships on 5,000 m in 2022. At the World Athletics Championships, Gudaf also won the gold medal for 10,000 metres in 2023; a bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2019, and silver in 2022. She is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist in the women's 5,000 metres. She is a two-time World Indoor Championship 1,500 m medallist, claiming bronze in 2016 and gold in 2022. Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a Norwegian middle- and long-distance runner who is the current world record holder in the short track 1500 metres, the 2000 metres and the 3000 metres, and holds the world best time over the two mile distance. Ingebrigtsen is a two-time Olympic champion, having won gold medals in the 1500 m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting what was then an Olympic and European record, and in the 5000 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
