Hatirjheel Thana is a thana in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It was formed in 2018 with the Hatirjheel project and its surrounding areas. The areas under this thana were earlier under the thanas of Ramna, Tejgaon Industrial Area and Rampura . [4] Hatirjheel Thana is a part of Dhaka North City Corporation.
Legend has it that the elephants of Dhaka's Pilkhana, Dhanmondi used to take baths in these wetlands. Hati ( Bengali : হাতি) in Bengali means elephant and Jheel ( Bengali : ঝিল) means lake – hence the name Hatirjheel.
Previously, the area of Hatirjheel was overlapped by multiple thanas, namely Tejgaon I/A, Ramna, Gulshan, Badda and Rampura. During any incident, it would be confusing to identify the jurisdiction that particular area fell under. To solve this problem many people suggested establishing a thana in the area. Finally, the Hatirjheel Thana was formed as the 50th police station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on 7 July 2018. [5]
The thana includes the areas of Moghbazar Wireless Colony, Boro Moghbazar, West Moghbazar, Hatirjheel Project Areas, SAARC Fountain of Ward No-39, Pan Pacific Hotel Sonargaon Road, parts of Banglamotors, parts of Eskaton, New Eskaton Road, parts of Malibagh Chowdhury Para, Nayatola, North Nayatala 1st Part, North Nayatola 2nd Part, East Nayatola, South Nayatola, Dilu Road, Peyarabagh Central Peyarabagh, Greenway, BGMEA Building, Mirertek, Mirbagh, Madhubagh, Link Road Level Crossing, Begunbari Canal, Rainbow Crossing, Tejkuni Para, Shaheenbagh, Arjatpara, West Rampura, Mohanogor Project Area, Hatirjheel-Badda Link Road, Abul Hossain Road, Wapda Road, Police Plaza, Hajipara and its adjoining areas. Shahbagh is a major neighbourhood and a police precinct or thana in Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. It is also a major public transport hub. It is a junction between two contrasting sections of the city—Old Dhaka and New Dhaka—which lie, respectively, to its south and north. Developed in the 17th century during Mughal rule in Bengal, when Old Dhaka was the provincial capital and a centre of the flourishing muslin industry, it came to neglect and decay in early 19th century. In the mid-19th century, the Shahbagh area was developed as New Dhaka became a provincial centre of the British Raj, ending a century of decline brought on by the passing of Mughal rule.
Motijheel is a central business district and a thana of Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is Dhaka's primary central business district, and also the nation's largest commercial and financial hub. Motijheel, located immediately adjacent to Dhaka's zero point, has the largest number of offices in Dhaka. Motijheel CBD also has one of the highest concentrations of high-rise buildings in Bangladesh. It has thus earned the title of the downtown and city centre of Dhaka and as the bankpara-officepara in Bengali.
Ramna is a thana (precinct) in central Dhaka and a historic colonial neighbourhood. Once the site of Mughal gardens, it developed into an institutional area during British rule in the late 19th century. It became a focal point for Dhaka's modernisation in the 1960s. It was the scene of many tumultuous events that ushered the independence of Bangladesh in 1971. Ramna Thana falls under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation.
Tejgaon is a thana of Dhaka District in the Division of Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is in the centre of Dhaka, the capital. In 2006, the boundaries of the thana were redrawn when Tejgaon Industrial Area Thana was created out of the former larger area and again in 2009, when Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Thana was created.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway is an all-elevated toll road in Bangladesh. The 19.73-kilometre (12.26 mi) road, regarded as the country's first elevated expressway, partially opened in 2023. It connects the Dhaka airport with Farmgate area in Tejgaon, with construction ongoing to connect it with the Dhaka–Chittagong Highway. It acts as a bridge between the major thanas of Ramna, Shahbagh, Dhanmondi, Paltan and Motijheel, and is located at the crossroads of Ramna, Shahbag and Paltan thanas.
Niketan or Niketon also known as Niketan Residential Area, Gulshan or Niketan Housing Society is an upscale residential neighbourhood in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Niketan is also a part of Gulshan Thana and Ward No. 20 of Dhaka North City Corporation.
New Dhaka, is an unofficial term used to describe the area located north of Old Dhaka that has been incorporated in the city of Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh over time. The term is ambiguous, as it may refer either to upscale and/or planned neighbourhoods with wider streets, modern buildings, and improved facilities, or to the city of Dhaka excluding the Old Dhaka region.
