Extracurricular activities

Athletics

Athletic teams are called "Wildcats." Hayden won state championships in volleyball, basketball, cross country, golf and football in 2008.[ citation needed ] In the 2008–09 school year, the Wildcats were state champions in volleyball and girls' golf.[ citation needed ] The Wildcats, who had been runners-up in the previous year, defeated Perry-Lecompton High School 42–21 in football, winning their third state championship (two undefeated teams in 1998 and 2004). [3]

Boys' basketball

Hayden has had much success in boys' basketball, winning eight state titles in the Kansas 4A classification. State titles were won in 1982, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, 2008, and 2018. [4]

Sumner Academy of Arts and Science is a nationally ranked magnet school in Kansas City, Kansas which prepares students for high-level academic and creative pursuits. Named for abolitionist Charles Sumner, it started in 1905 during a period of racial tension as a segregated school for black ("Negro") students, which offered vocational training, but emphasized college-preparatory training. Located at 1610 N. 8th Street, the current architecturally significant complex began with its Art Deco core in 1937, but has been repeatedly expanded. The segregated Sumner High School closed in 1978, converting at that time to its present high-challenge magnet program.
