Heartland Village is a residential development located close to the geographic center of Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City, USA. The name is also often used to denote the immediately surrounding area.
Heartland Village is located within the New Springville neighborhood of Staten Island. Heartland Village is originally named for a housing development created in the late 1960s which occupied a square-shaped area bounded by Richmond Avenue, Rockland Avenue, Richmond Hill Road, and Forest Hill Road, exclusive of the various shopping centers also located therein. The Staten Island Mall is located south of Richmond Hill Road. [1]
Heartland Village's proximity to the Staten Island Mall and many other smaller shopping centers nearby has made it one of the island's most attractive residential communities; indeed, the region has emerged as the island's second largest commercial and administrative hub, after St. George.
New Springville was originally a rural and wooded community. The construction of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (opened in 1964) led to the establishment on Staten Island of many large residential development communities. One of the largest development communities to emerge was the Heartland Village community. Construction of the Heartland Village Community started in the late 1960s and would continue through the early 1980s.
Most of the homes in Heartland Village consist of two family homes with six or seven rooms in the main home, with three bedrooms. These are medium-sized homes. In recent years, with most new construction has been focused on larger homes or condominiums, these medium-sized homes have become particularly desirable.
With the increasing residential population, a need arose for new schools to be built in the community. In 1976, two such schools opened: An elementary school, P.S. 69, the Daniel D. Tompkins School and I.S. 72, the Rocco Laurie Intermediate School.
Heartland Village is served by various local and express buses. The S44 , S94 , S59 and S89 local buses and SIM4 , SIM4X , SIM8 and SIM8X express buses travel along Richmond Avenue. The S61 and S91 local buses and SIM31 express buses run along Travis Avenue and Merry Mount Street. [2]
As of the 2010 census, the demographics were as follows: 76.48% White, 1.94% Black, 16.17% Asian, 3.22% Some Other Race, and 1.99% Two or More Races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 12.10% of the population. [3] The population density was 21,473.61 people per square mile, with a density of housing units of 8,250.96 per square mile.
Richmondtown is a neighborhood in the Mid-Island section of Staten Island, New York City. It is bounded by Arthur Kill Road on the northwest, Richmond Road on the north, Amboy Road on the east and southeast, and the United Hebrew and Ocean View cemeteries on the southwest.
Staten Island Mall is a shopping mall in New Springville, Staten Island, New York City, opened in 1973. It is the only indoor shopping mall in the borough. It is the largest retail center on the island and is the site of the island's third-largest public transit hub after the St. George Terminal and Eltingville Transit Center, with numerous bus routes that connect to the periphery of the mall area. It is the second largest shopping center in New York City. The mall features Primark, JCPenney, and Macy's, in addition to an 11-screen dine-in AMC Theatres.
Arrochar is a neighborhood in northeastern Staten Island in New York City in the United States. It is located directly inland of Fort Wadsworth and South Beach, on the east side of Hylan Boulevard south of the Staten Island Expressway; the community of Grasmere borders it on the west. Eltingville Transit Center is a park and ride transit center that is located in Eltingville, Staten Island. It is located at the intersection of Arthur Kill Road and Richmond Avenue, at the end of the Korean War Veterans Parkway. The transit center was completed in 2004. Amenities include schedules, maps, free parking, and vending machines for soda, snacks, and MetroCards. The center is halfway between the Eltingville Staten Island Railway station and the Staten Island Mall, another transit center, including the adjacent Yukon Depot.
Richmond Avenue is a major north-south thoroughfare on Staten Island, New York. Measuring approximately 7.0 miles (11.3 km), the road runs from the South Shore community of Eltingville to the North Shore community of Graniteville.
Manor Heights is a neighborhood located in Staten Island, New York City. Manor comes from the fact that the neighborhood is adjacent to Manor Road, a major thoroughfare in the North Shore of Staten Island, and Heights due to the area's sudden elevation within its boundaries. Arlington is a neighborhood on the North Shore of Staten Island in New York City. It is a subsection of the Mariners' Harbor neighborhood, located north of the North Shore Branch, and west of Harbor Road.
