Naba Kumar Saraniya alias Heera Saraniya,also spelled as Heera Sarania and Hira Sarania,alias Naba Deka (born 1 May 1969) is an Indian politician who was serving as the Member of parliament,Lok Sabha representing the Kokrajhar constituency in Assam from 2014 to 2019 as an Independent Candidate and since 2019 as a member of Gana Suraksha Party. [2] [3] He won by the highest margin ever recorded in polls in Assam and as an independent candidate in the history of Lok Sabha elections. [1] He is also the founder and president of Gana Suraksha Party since 2019. [4] Earlier,Saraniya was the commander of the 709 battalion of ULFA. He was said to be one of the most dreaded militants in Assam. [5] [6]
Saraniya’s father is dead and he is the eldest among four brothers and two sisters. Both sisters are in their twenties. The saraniyas own 15 bighas of land and are fairly well-off. They live in a typical Assamese house. [7]
Despite being the son of retired Indian army personnel,Naba joined the militant outfit ULFA in mid-1980s. [8] [9] In his militant life he was known as Heera Sarania. Heera was trained in Myanmar and Afghanistan. Sarania was the commander of ULFA's 709 Battalion. [10]
On 17 November 2005,10 army personnel from the Dumuni cob (Company Operating Base) were able to recover Saraniya’s diary along with some arms,ammunitions,cash and cash-demand letter at Jala Gaon in the newly formed Baska district. [11] The diary reveals Bhutan’s one-time collusion with the outfit and the ULFA’s deep-seated ire against India. [7] Journalist Teresa Rehman claimed that she got the diary of Heera Sarania. [12]
On 20 August 2013,Guwahati city police arrested Heera Saraniya along with 3 other persons in charge of robbery,kidnap and murder. [13] Similarly a case has been registered against him on 9 Oct.,2020 at Kokrajhar police station. [14]
The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is an armed militant organisation operating in the Northeast Indian state of Assam. It seeks to establish an independent sovereign nation state of Assam for the indigenous Assamese people through an armed struggle in the Assam conflict. The Government of India banned the organisation in 1990 citing it as a terrorist organisation,while the United States Department of State lists it under "other groups of concern".

He was representing the Barhampur constituency in Assam Legislative Assembly from 1991 to 2021 and Nowgong constituency from 1985 to 1991. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly from 2010 to 2014 and again from 1991 to 1996.He became the chief minister in the state when the AGP came to power in 1985,becoming the youngest Chief Minister of an Indian state. He is also a former president of the All Assam Students Union,an organization that spearheaded the Assam Movement from 1979 to 1985.In August 2005,his membership in the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) was terminated. So,he floated a new political party,Asom Gana Parishad (Progressive) on 15 September 2005.

He won the third General Assembly Elections 2015 and formed his Government for the third time. Mohilary was the chief of the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) before joining the mainstream politics in 2003.

Madati and Sankosh are some of the prominent rivers that flow through the heart of the town,and forested areas include such saleable trees as Shorea robusta (sal),Tectona grandis (teak). This place practices organic farming as well as modern agriculture,following recent scientific developments.
The Nellie massacre took place in central Assam during a six-hour period on the morning of 18 February 1983. The massacre claimed the lives of 1,600–2,000 people from 14 villages—Alisingha,Khulapathar,Basundhari,Bugduba Beel,Bugduba Habi,Borjola,Butuni,Dongabori,Indurmari,Mati Parbat,Muladhari,Mati Parbat no. 8,Silbheta,Borburi and Nellie—of Nagaon district. The victims were Muslim of Bengali origin. Three media personnel—Hemendra Narayan of The Indian Express,Bedabrata Lahkar of The Assam Tribune and Sharma of ABC—were witnesses to the massacre.

The controversy erupted when journalist Ritu Sarin of the Indian Express broke a story that involved the illegal tapping of the telephone calls of business tycoon Nusli Wadia and published,on 4–5 October 1997,transcripts of the telephone conversations he had with Keshub Mahindra,Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw,then Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Jayant Malhoutra and Ratan Tata about Tata Tea's problems with the Assam Government.
