Sushmita Dev (born 25 September 1972) is an Indian politician and member of Rajya Sabha from West Bengal, and belongs to the All India Trinamool Congress. Previously, she was elected to the Lok Sabha, lower house of the Parliament of India from Silchar, Assam in the 2014 Indian general election as a member of the Indian National Congress. [3] She is the former president of All India Mahila Congress. [1] She lost the 2019 Lok Sabha Election to BJP candidate Rajdeep Roy, which led her to resign from Indian National Congress and to join the All India Trinamool Congress in 2021. [4]
She currently serves as the national spokesperson of the All India Trinamool Congress.[ citation needed ]
Dev is the daughter of the veteran Indian National Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev and her mother is Bithika Dev, a legislator of Silchar of Assam assembly. Her father was a member of parliament and cabinet minister of India. [5]
She holds a B.A.(Hons.) from Miranda House, Bar-at-Law, an LLB (Corporate and Commercial Laws) from University of Delhi. She enrolled at Inns of Courts School of Law, London and King's College London, UK. [6]
The All India Trinamool Congress is an Indian political party that is mainly influential in the state of West Bengal. It was founded by Mamata Banerjee on 1 January 1998 as a breakaway faction from the Indian National Congress and rapidly rose to prominence in the politics of West Bengal under her leadership. Presently, it is ruling the state of West Bengal beside being the third-largest party in India in terms of number of MPs just after the BJP and INC.
Santosh Mohan Dev, was an Indian political leader and a key member of the Indian National Congress. Mr. Dev was first elected to the Parliament in 1980, the first of his seven terms in office as the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. Out of these seven, he has represented Silchar constituency, Assam five times and he was elected from Tripura West constituency twice. Mr Dev has the rare distinction of being elected from two different states.
