All India Mahila Congress (AIMC), also referred to as Mahila Congress, is the women's wing of the Indian National Congress (INC). [1] It was founded in 1940 to promote the political and social empowerment of women in India. Currently Alka Lamba heads the All India Mahila Congress as its president appointed on 5 January 2024

History

An early high point for the organisation was a conference held in Bangalore in mid-1984 attended by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and 30,000 delegates. [2]

Organisation

The All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) consists of the state level committees designated as Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (State Women's Congress Committee) which represents the AIMC in the states and union territories of India. [3] The AIMC consists of the card–holding women members of the Indian National Congress which elects the executive committee and state president of each of the PMCCs. [4] [ failed verification ]

General Secretary

In October 2015 Nagma, who was previously a film actress, was appointed to the office General Secretary. [5] In January 2019 INC president Rahul Gandhi appointed Apsara Reddy as National General Secretary, Reddy being noted as the first transgender office holder in the AIMC. [6]

In March 2020, Aiyshwarya Mahadev was appointed its National Secretary.

In August 2021, Netta D'Souza was appointed its Acting National President. [7]

B. Janardhana Poojary is a senior politician from Indian National Congress party. He was a former Union Minister and Karnataka's Congress President. During the Prime Ministership of Smt. Indira Gandhi he had been appointed Union Minister of State for Finance in 1982 and he continued to be Union Minister of State for Finance during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi until 1987. Later Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as Union Minister of State for Rural Development from 1987 to 1989. Shree Rajiv Gandhi also appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as General Secretary of All India Congress Committee in 1990 as well as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 1990. He continued to be General Secretary of All India Congress Committee during the tenure of Prime Minister Shree P. V. Narasimha Rao up to 1996. After Shree Rajiv Gandhi his wife All India Congress Committee President & United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi also appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 2003 for the second time. He continued as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee up to 2005.

Jitendra Prasada was an Indian politician and a former vice-president of the Indian National Congress. He was also the political advisor to two prime ministers of India, Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and P. V. Narasimha Rao in 1994.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Alka Lamba</span> Indian politician

Alka Lamba is an Indian politician serving for the President of All India Mahila Congress. After serving the Indian National Congress in various capacities for more than 20 years, she quit to join the Aam Aadmi Party on 26 December 2014. In February 2015, Lamba was elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly from Chandni Chowk. She quit AAP in September 2019 citing disrespect for her within the party. On 6 September 2019, she formally returned to the Congress party. She was however disqualified from the Delhi assembly by Delhi speaker for violating the rules for party change over a gesture of strong warning to tainted turncoats.

Kunduru Jana Reddy is an Indian politician. He was the leader of opposition in first Telangana Assembly and served as the Minister for Panchayat Raj & Rural Water Supply in the State of Andhra Pradesh during its term from 2009 to 2014. He was among the most prominent cabinet ministers of the ruling Indian National Congress (INC) and served as Minister for Home, Jails, Fire Service, Sainik Welfare, Printing & Stationery in the government led by the late former Chief Minister Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy from 2004 to 2009. In 2009 elections he won with a margin of 6214 votes against industrialist turned politician of TDP Chinappa Reddy Tera. In 2014 he won with a margin of 16558 votes over Nomula Narsimaiah of BRS in the year where Congress lost the majority vote. He lost the 1994 elections to TDP candidate Gundeboina Rammoorthy Yadav.

Kumari Vimla Verma was an Indian politician and social worker. She was a Member of Parliament, having been elected from the Seoni constituency in the state of Madhya Pradesh as an Indian National Congress candidate.

Mohammed Ali Shabbir is an Indian politician who had served as the Opposition Leader of Telangana Legislative Council from 4 April 2015 to 22 December 2018.

Apsara Reddy is an Indian trans woman politician and journalist. She was earlier inducted as National Spokesperson of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam by Former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in 2016. On 8 January 2018, Reddy became the first transgender person to hold office in the Congress She returned to the AIADMK and campaigned as its star campaigner in the 2021 State elections.

Ramasahayam Surender Reddy is a former Indian Member of Parliament and Member of Legislative Assembly who represented Mahabubabad of Andhra State in the 3rd Lok Sabha and Warangal in the 4th, 9th and 10th Lok Sabha.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chitra Sarwara</span> Indian politician

Chitra Sarwara is daughter of Nirmal Singh Mohra and a second generation politician. She was a former member of Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal and was appointed as State Vice President, Haryana since April 2023. She joined Indian National Congress on January 2024.
