Henrietta Joy Abena Nyarko Mensa-Bonsu, JSC, FGA (born 29 October 1957) is a Supreme Court Judge of the Republic of Ghana. [2] She was nominated by president Nana Akufo-Addo. [3] [4] [5] She is the 5th female member of the Court. [6] [7] Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, she was a Ghanaian law professor who served as a member of the United Nations Independent Panel On Peace Operations. [8] [9]

Early life and education

Henrietta Joy Abena Nyarko was born on 29 October 1957 in Kumasi. [1]

She attended Wesley Girls High School for both her ordinary level certificate and advanced level certificate obtained in 1975 and 1977 respectively. She continued at University of Ghana where she graduated with Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1980 and studied at the Ghana School of Law from 1980 to 1982. She was called to the Ghana bar in 1982. She had postgraduate studies at Yale University, obtaining a Master of Laws (LLM) in 1985. [10]

Career

Mensa-Bonsu was employed as a law lecturer at the University of Ghana in 1985 and rose through the ranks to attain full professorship in 2002. In 2003, she was elected a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. [4] Some academic positions held by Mensa-Bonsu at University of Ghana include been Director of the Legon Centre for International and Advanced Diplomacy and the acting Dean of the Faculty of Law. She was elected president of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019. [11]

She has used platforms available to her to advocate for peace to accelerate national development. She was the guest speaker at the Second Annual Peace Lecture put together by the Accra West chapter of the Rotary Club and the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), where she spoke about the "need to nurture peace" without waiting "till the need arises for peace before we go for it". [8] She delivered the 2014 University of Ghana Alumni Association lecture on the topic "The African Union’s Peace and Security Architecture: A guarantor of peace and security on the continent”. [10]

In 2017, Mensa-Bonsu failed in her bid to be elected as a Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC). [12] She was a member of the Presidential Commission of Enquiry which probed the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence. [13] [4] [14]

Supreme Court appointment

Mensa-Bonsu was nominated by Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, the President of Ghana, in May 2020 for consideration for appointment to the bench of the Supreme Court of Ghana. [15]

Her name was submitted with other three judges by the president Nana Akufo-Addo to Parliament for appointment into the Supreme Court bench. The others were Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga, Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu and Justice Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi. [4] She was approved by the Parliament after she was recommended by the Appointment Committee. [6] [8] She was sworn into office by the President Nana Akufo-Addo. [16] [17]

Personal life

Henrietta Joy Abena Nyarko married Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu. [ when? ] They have three daughters, five grandchildren, three foster sons and three foster grandchildren. [13]

Martin Alamisi Burnes Kaiser Amidu is a Ghanaian politician and lawyer who served as Attorney General and Minister for Justice in Ghana from 2011 to 2012 and then as the First Special Prosecutor of the country from 2018 until his resignation in 2020, citing political interference by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo. He is also known for introducing the word ‘gargantuan‘, into the body politics of Ghana, when he opened investigations in the Woyome scandal which was one of the highest profiled corruption cases at the time. On 11 January 2018, Martin A.B.K Amidu was named by the President of Ghana as the Special Prosecutor for the newly created Office of the Special Prosecutor. Nana Akufo-Addo touted his anti-corruption fights as Attorney General and a private citizen as reasons for choosing Mr. Amidu, his one-time political adversary.

Nicholas Yaw Boafo Adade (1927–2013) was a former supreme court judge and Attorney General of the Republic of Ghana. He was the Attorney General of Ghana between 14 April 1969 to 1970 in the Busia government. He was also Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South constituency in the 2nd Ghanaian Republic.

Kwasi Anin-Yeboah is a Ghanaian judge and the immediate past Chief Justice of Ghana. In December 2019, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo nominated Justice Anin-Yeboah as the Chief Justice of Ghana.

Samuel Abu Jinapor, is a Ghanaian lawyer and a politician. He is a member of the New Patriotic Party and the Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency. In 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo appointed him as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations at the Office of the President, at the age of 33, the youngest in the history of Ghana to occupy such a position. Jean Adukwei Mensa is a Ghanaian lawyer by profession who has been serving as chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana since July 2018. She was nominated by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo to take over the Ghana Electoral Commission Job from her predecessor, Madam Charlotte Osei. Madam Jean Mensa was born on November 12, 1971. Prior to assuming the role of chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa spent an 18-year career at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), rising to the position of executive director. As the Chief Returning Officer, Madam Jean Mensa declared the then presidential candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP as the validly president-elect of the December 7th, 2020 Presidential Election.

General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2020. Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was re-elected in the first round after securing a majority of the votes. Former President John Dramani Mahama announced that he would contest the results. At the Supreme Court, a petition challenging the result was filed on 30 December, and unanimously dismissed on 4 March 2021 for lack of merit.

Her Ladyship JusticeGertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo is a Ghanaian judge. She was nominated to the Supreme Court in November 2019 and received parliamentary approval in December 2019. She was sworn in on 17 December 2019. She was nominated to the office of Chief Justice in April 2023 to replace Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah who retired as Chief Justice on May 24, 2023. She was sworn into office as the 15th Chief Justice of Ghana on 12 June 2023.

Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu is a Supreme Court judge of the Republic of Ghana.

Clemence Jackson Honyenuga was a Ghanaian judge. He is an active Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana from 22 May 2020 until 4 September 2022.

Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi is a Ghanaian judge. He is an active Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana. He was nominated and appointed a Supreme Court judge in 2020.

Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu is a Ghanaian judge. He is an active Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana. He has been on the bench in Ghana since 1996 and became a Supreme Court judge in 2022.

Ernest Yao Gaewu is a Ghanaian lawyer and judge who is in active service at the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Anthony Henry Kwofie is a Ghanaian judge, an active justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and president of the Association of Magistrates and Justices of Ghana.
