Henrik Jacobsen Kleven (born 28 April 1971) is a Danish economist who is currently a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University. He is also co-editor of the American Economic Review . His research lies inside the domain of public economics and inequality, in particular questions about tax policy and welfare programs. He combines economic theory and empirical evidence to show ways of designing more effective public policies. His work has had policy impact in both developed and developing countries.
Kleven obtained his M.Sc. in economics from the University of Copenhagen in 2001 and received his Ph.D. in economics from the same institution in 2003. His thesis adviser was Professor Peter Birch Sørensen, and the title of his thesis was Taxation, Time Allocation, and Economic Efficiency. [1] Following his Ph.D., he worked first as an assistant professor and then as an associate professor at University of Copenhagen before moving to the London School of Economics (LSE) in 2007. He became a full professor at the LSE in 2013. Since July 2017, he has been a professor in the Department of Economics and Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. [2]
Kleven's research combines economic theory and empirical evidence (often using large administrative datasets) to study the impact and design of public policies. He has authored or co-authored numerous scientific publications, including articles in the journals American Economic Review , Econometrica , Journal of Political Economy , Quarterly Journal of Economics and Review of Economic Studies . Among his co-authors are the Danish public finance economists Peter Birch Sørensen and Claus Thustrup Kreiner as well as Emmanuel Saez, Gabriel Zucman, Camille Landais, Wojciech Kopczuk, Joel Slemrod, and Jonathan Gruber. A number of Kleven's contributions study behavioral responses to tax and transfer policies. This includes studies of the impact of such policies on labor supply, taxable income, tax evasion, and international migration. Much of his work leverages large-scale administrative data from European countries (such as Denmark), but he has also studied policies in developing countries and in the United States. In a recent article, Kleven studies the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program in the United States, arguing that the impact of this program on the labor force participation of single mothers has been smaller than the program is typically credited for. He argues that the historical increase in labor force participation among single mothers in the 1990s was driven primarily by welfare reform and a strong macro economy rather than by the EITC.
One of Kleven's more easily accessible contributions is "How can Scandinavians tax so much?", published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives in 2014. Here he attempts to answer a question often asked by Americans visiting Denmark and the other Scandinavian countries: How can the Scandinavian countries have such high levels of prosperity and economic efficiency, while at the same time imposing high tax rates and offering generous welfare programs that reduce economic incentives? Kleven points to three facts that make the distortions of the Danish tax and transfer system relatively small: the widespread use of third-party information reporting (ensuring a low level of tax evasion), broad tax bases with few exemptions and deductions (ensuring a low level of tax avoidance), and strong subsidization of goods that are complementary to working (ensuring a high level of labor force participation). He also hypothesizes that social and cultural norms may play a role, specifically that high levels of trust and social coherence in Scandinavia make high taxes more acceptable and help ensure low tax avoidance. In recent years, Kleven has produced a number of articles on gender inequality in the labor market. This work has developed new ways of estimating the so-called child penalty. This term refers to the negative impact of having children on the labor market outcomes (such as labor supply or earnings) of women relative to men. Together with co-authors, he shows that child penalties are very large and persistent in a range of countries and that they account for most of the remaining gender inequality. This implies that efforts to increase gender equality should focus on the division of child care responsibilities in families with children. His paper "Children and Gender Inequality: Evidence from Denmark" (published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics in 2019) develops the methodology and received the AEJ Best Paper Award in 2020. In other papers, Kleven studies the underlying factors that might be responsible for the large child penalties on women such as biology, comparative advantage, public policies, social norms and culture. He argues that norms and culture are the most likely drivers of the variation in child penalties observed across countries and over time.
Kleven is co-editor of the American Economic Review , the premier journal of the American Economic Association. Previously he was chief editor of the Journal of Public Economics . He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, whose public economics program he directed from 2014 to 2017. [2]
James Joseph Heckman is an American economist and Nobel laureate who serves as the Henry Schultz Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago, where he is also a professor at the College, a professor at the Harris School of Public Policy, Director of the Center for the Economics of Human Development (CEHD), and Co-Director of Human Capital and Economic Opportunity (HCEO) Global Working Group. He is also a professor of law at the Law School, a senior research fellow at the American Bar Foundation, and a research associate at the NBER. He received the John Bates Clark Medal in 1983, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2000, which he shared with Daniel McFadden. He is known principally for his pioneering work in econometrics and microeconomics.

Economic theory and economic policy have long seen income and its distribution as a central concern. Unequal distribution of income causes economic inequality which is a concern in almost all countries around the world.

Kamer Daron Acemoğlu is a Turkish-American economist of Armenian descent who has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1993, where he is currently the Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics, and was named an Institute Professor at MIT in 2019. He received the John Bates Clark Medal in 2005, and the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2024.
A government budget is a projection of the government's revenues and expenditure for a particular period, often referred to as a financial or fiscal year, which may or may not correspond with the calendar year. Government revenues mostly include taxes while expenditures consist of government spending. A government budget is prepared by the Central government or other political entity. In most parliamentary systems, the budget is presented to the legislature and often requires approval of the legislature. The government implements economic policy through this budget and realizes its program priorities. Once the budget is approved, the use of funds from individual chapters is in the hands of government ministries and other institutions. Revenues of the state budget consist mainly of taxes, customs duties, fees, and other revenues. State budget expenditures cover the activities of the state, which are either given by law or the constitution. The budget in itself does not appropriate funds for government programs, hence the need for additional legislative measures. The word budget comes from the Old French brunette.
Konstantinos "Costas" Meghir is a Greek-British economist. He studied at the University of Manchester where he graduated with a Ph.D. in 1985, following an MA in economics in 1980 and a BA in Economics and Econometrics in 1979. In 1997 he was awarded the Bodosakis foundation prize and in 2000 he was awarded the “Ragnar Frisch Medal” for his article “Estimating Labour Supply Responses using Tax Reforms”.
The Nordic model comprises the economic and social policies as well as typical cultural practices common in the Nordic countries. This includes a comprehensive welfare state and multi-level collective bargaining based on the economic foundations of social corporatism, and a commitment to private ownership within a market-based mixed economy – with Norway being a partial exception due to a large number of state-owned enterprises and state ownership in publicly listed firms.

William A. "Sandy" Darity Jr. is an American economist and social scientist at Duke University. Darity's research spans economic history, development economics, economic psychology, and the history of economic thought, but most of his research is devoted to group-based inequality, especially with respect to race and ethnicity. His 2005 paper in the Journal of Economics and Finance established Darity as the 'founder of stratification economics.' His varied research interests have also included the trans-Atlantic slave trade, African American reparations and the economics of black reparations, and social and economic policies that affect inequities by race and ethnicity. For the latter, he has been described as "perhaps the country’s leading scholar on the economics of racial inequality."

Gender budgeting means preparing budgets or analyzing them from a gender perspective. Also referred to as gender-sensitive budgeting, this practice does not entail dividing budgets for women. It aims at dealing with budgetary gender inequality issues, including gender hierarchies and the discrepancies between women's and men's salaries. At its core, gender budgeting is a feminist policy with a primary goal of re-orienting the allocation of public resources, advocating for an advanced decision-making role for women in important issues, and securing equity in the distribution of resources between men and women. Gender budgeting allows governments to promote equality through fiscal policies by taking analyses of a budget's differing impacts on the sexes as well as setting goals or targets for equality and allocating funds to support those goals. This practice does not always target intentional discrimination but rather forces an awareness of the effects of financial schemes on all genders.
Hilary Hoynes is an economist and Haas Distinguished Chair in Economic Disparities at the Richard and Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley. She studies the impact of tax and transfer programs on low-income families, particularly single parent families. She was the 2014 winner of the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession. She has been a co-editor of the American Economic Review, co-editor of American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Associate editor of Journal of Public Economics and Journal of Economic Perspectives.
Camille Landais is a French economist who currently works as Professor of economics at the London School of Economics. His research focuses on public finance and labour economics. In 2016, Landais was awarded the Prize of Best Young Economist of France for his research on the relationship between changes in inequality and fiscal and social policy.
Patrick McGraw Kline is an U.S. American economist and Professor of Economics of the University of California at Berkeley. In 2018, his research was awarded the Sherwin Rosen Prize by the Society of Labor Economists for "outstanding contributions in the field of labor economics". In 2020, he was awarded the prestigious IZA Young Labor Economist Award.
Gary A. Hoover is an American professor of economics and director of the Murphy Institute at Tulane University. From January 2015 until December 2020 he was a professor and Chair of the Economics Department at the University of Oklahoma. He was the first and only African American ever hired in that department. In August 1998 he joined the Department of Economics, Finance and Legal Studies at the University of Alabama. He was the first and only African American ever hired in that department, on the tenure track. He was tenured in August 2004 and in 2005 became the Assistant Dean for Graduate Student and Faculty Development in the Culverhouse College of Commerce while maintaining full teaching and research duties. He was granted full professor in August 2010. In March 2017 he founded and became the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Economics, Race, and Policy. He has published extensively on race and inequality in the United States, and is a leading scholar on plagiarism and other types of misconduct in the economics profession.
Damon Jones is an American economist and associate professor at the Harris School of Public Policy in the University of Chicago. Alongside his academic research, Jones is a popular science communicator and regularly provides expert commentary on issues related to economics and public policy. During the COVID-19 pandemic he investigated the disproportionate impact of coronavirus disease on communities of color, and delivered evidence on his findings before the United States House Committee on the Budget.
Nada O. Eissa is an American economist who is an associate professor of Public Policy and Economics at Georgetown University and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). She was Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy (microeconomics) in 2005–2007.
