Heyshott Down is a 42.6-hectare (105-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Midhurst in West Sussex. [1] [2] It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade 2. [3]

This site on the South Downs is unimproved chalk grassland, which is a nationally rare habitat. The grassland is plant-rich and it is nationally important for mosses and liverworts, such as Antitrichia curtipendula , Hylocomium brevirostre and Rhytidiadelphus loreus . The site is also nationally important for spiders and harvestmen and it is one of only two sites in Britain where the spider Tapinocyboides pygmaea has been recorded. [4]

There is access by footpaths from Cocking and Heyshott.

In 2002 it was designated as a Special Area of Conservation, to protect the orchid-rich grassland as part of the Natura 2000 network of sites throughout the European Union.

Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve is located on the north-west escarpment of the Chiltern Hills, in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has an area of 159.1 hectares, and most of it is a 128.5 hectares biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is listed as a Grade 1 site in A Nature Conservation Review. The reserve is in several sections, mostly in the parish of Lewknor in Oxfordshire, with smaller sections in the parish of Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire.

Alde–Ore Estuary is a 2,534 hectare biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest which stretches along the Suffolk coast between Aldeburgh and Bawdsey, and also includes parts of the Alde, Ore and Butley Rivers. It is in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is a Grade I Nature Conservation Review site, a Special Area of Conservation, a Ramsar internationally important wetland site, and a Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds. It includes two Geological Conservation Review sites, "Orfordness and Shingle Street" and "The Cliff, Gedgrave", and two nature reserves managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Alde Mudflats and Simpson's Saltings. The coastal part of the site is Orfordness-Havergate, a National Nature Reserve, and Orford Ness is managed by the National Trust, while Havergate Island is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Martin Down is a 341-hectare (840-acre) national nature reserve and an area of 115 hectares is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I. Bokerley Dyke, a prehistoric linear earthwork and scheduled monument, runs through the site.

It is part of Solent and Southampton Water Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and of Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation. Boldre Foreshore is a local nature reserve.

Porton Down SSSI is a 1,559-hectare (3,850-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest which spans the border between Hampshire and Wiltshire in England. It is adjacent to Porton Down science park near Porton, and much of it is Ministry of Defence property which is closed to the public. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area.

Stockbridge Down is a 69.8-hectare (172-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Stockbridge in Hampshire. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade 2. It is owned by the National Trust and part of it is a Scheduled Monument, with an Iron Age hillfort and fourteen Bronze Age burial mounds.
