History of rugby union matches between England and Japan

Last updated

In rugby union, England and Japan first met in September 1971, when they played a two-match series as part of a tour of the Far East; England did not award caps. England went on another uncapped tour in 1979. The two teams played in England for the first time in 1986, when England again did not award caps. The first capped match between the two nations was in the pool stage of the 1987 Rugby World Cup, when England won 60–7 at the Concord Oval in Sydney, Australia. Their next meeting came 31 years later, followed by four more meetings in three years between 2022 and 2024. England have won all six capped matches between the two sides, the most recent being a 59–14 win at Twickenham in November 2024.
