The Hokkaido Shimbun (北海道新聞, Hokkaidō Shinbun), which is often abbreviated as Doshin (道新, Dōshin), is a Japanese language daily newspaper published mainly in Hokkaidō, Japan by The Hokkaido Shimbun Press (株式会社北海道新聞社, Kabushiki-gaisha Hokkaidō Shinbunsha). As of June 2022, its morning edition has a circulation of 840,000. It was first published in Sapporo in 1887.

Levanga Hokkaido is a Japanese professional basketball team based in the city of Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido. The club was founded in 2006 as Rera Kamuy Hokkaido, this name comes from the language of the Ainu, an ethnic group indigenous to Hokkaido, and means "god of the winds". The franchise changed its name twice in 2011; the first when the club's parent company was kicked out of the league due to financial woes in the season. The team ended the season with a league-backed management group and a new moniker, calling itself Basketball Club Hokkaido. And finally, took its current name Levanga Hokkaido, in August 2011.

The district is the country's second largest in terms of area after the neighbouring 12th district.

The 2019 Hokkaido gubernatorial election was held on 7 April 2019 to elect the next Governor of Hokkaido Prefecture. After serving four terms, incumbent Governor Harumi Takahashi decided not to seek re-election. The election resulted in a landslide victory for Naomichi Suzuki, the former mayor of Yūbari, who won 62% of the popular vote. His opponent, Tomohiro Ishikawa, had the support of CDP, JCP, SDP and DPFP, but only managed to secure 37% of the vote.

A gubernatorial election was held on 7 April 1991 to elect the Governor of Hokkaido Prefecture.
