Sports in Hong Kong are a significant part of its culture. Due to British influence going as far back as the late 19th century, Hong Kong had an earlier introduction to Western athletics compared to other Asia regions. Horse racing has most spectators, while football, basketball, swimming, badminton, table tennis, cycling and running have the most participants. Golf is an increasingly popular sport, despite the relatively few number of courses in the city. In 2009, Hong Kong successfully organised the V East Asian Games and it was the biggest sporting event ever held in the territory. Other major international sporting events including the Equestrian at the 2008 Summer Olympics, the Hong Kong Open Golf Championship, the Hong Kong Sevens, Hong Kong Marathon, AFC Asian Cup, EAFF East Asian Cup, Hong Kong Badminton Open, Hong Kong Tennis Classic, Premier League Asia Trophy, and Lunar New Year Cup. Hong Kong athletes have improved in worldwide rankings. As of 2010, there are 32 Hong Kong athletes from seven sports ranking in world's Top 20, 29 athletes in six sports in Asia top 10 ranking. Moreover, Hong Kong is equally impressive performance of athletes with disabilities in 2009, having won four world championships and two Asian Champions.
China competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Yang Yang (A), a short track speed skater, served as flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies. Like most previous Olympics, coverage was via CCTV-5. The team excluded athletes from the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, which competed separately as Hong Kong, China.
Hong Kong, a special administrative region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, sent a delegation to compete at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy from 10–26 February 2010. The delegation competed under the formal name Hong Kong, China. This was the SAR's second appearance at a Winter Olympic Games, and the delegation consisted of a single athlete, short track speed skater Han Yueshuang. Entered in three events, her best performance was 18th in the women's 1,000 metres race.
Short track speed skating has been a contest at the Winter Olympics since the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France. Prior to that, it was a demonstration sport at the 1988 games. The results from the 1988 demonstration competition is not included in the official Olympic statistics. The sport has been dominated by teams from East Asia and North America, namely South Korea, China (CHN), Canada (CAN) and the United States (USA). Those four countries have won 134 of 168 medals awarded since 1992. South Korea leads the medal tally, with 42 medals including 21 golds since 1992. The majority of medals that South Korea won at the Winter Olympics came from short-track speed skating. Similarly, most of the China's Winter Olympics medals are from the sport.
The People's Republic of China competed at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, United States. The team excludes athletes from the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, which competed separately as Hong Kong, China. China won its first Winter Olympic gold medal at these Games. It had previously won silver and bronze medals at prior Games.
Originally having participated in Olympics as the delegation of the Republic of China (ROC) from 1924 to 1976, China competed at the Olympic Games under the name of the People's Republic of China (PRC) for the first time in 1952, at the Summer Games in Helsinki, Finland, although they only arrived in time to participate in one event. That year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed both the PRC and the Republic of China to compete, although the latter withdrew in protest. Due to the dispute over the political status of China, the PRC did not participate in the Olympics again until the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, United States. Their first appearance at the Summer Olympic Games after 1952 was the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States.
David Liu is a Taiwanese former competitive figure skater. He won silver medals at the 1991 Piruetten and 1992 Grand Prix International St. Gervais. He represented Taiwan at three Olympics, reaching the free skate at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, where he finished 17th.

Poo Yee "Cordia" Tsoi is a Canadian-born former short track speed skater who competed for Hong Kong at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Along with teammate Christy Ren, they became the first athletes to represent Hong Kong at the Winter Olympics.
