The Hospital Center Line, designated Route D8, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Washington Union Station and MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The line operates every 20-30 minutes at all times. Route D8 trips are roughly 45 minutes.
Route D8 operates daily between Washington Union Station and MedStar Washington Hospital Center connecting the hospital centers and Metrorail stations. The line also connects small neighborhoods to Metrorail stations. Route D8 currently operates out of Bladensburg division.
In the Hospital Complex, Only northbound buses from Union Station stop at Washington Hospital Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Buses travel once through Washington Hospital Center. Passengers that are wishing to go southbound from Washington Hospital Center would get on a northbound bus, which will turn into a southbound bus to Union Station at the 1st Street terminal, and proceed directly on 1st Street to Michigan Avenue.
Route D8 originally operated between Friendship Heights and Distaff Hall (Army Distaff Foundation Inc) until the 1970s.
Route D8 was created as a new route on June 4, 1977 to operate between Washington Hospital Center and Sibley Hospital alongside route D6, via the Hospital Complex, Trinity University, Glenwood Cemetery, the Edgewood Terrace Apartments, the Rhode Island Avenue Shopping Center, the Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood station, Washington Union Station, Judiciary Square, Metro Center, and Dupont Circle stations. When Dupont Circle station opened on January 15, 1977, both routes D6 and D8 did begin serving Dupont Circle in the middle of their routes. No changes were made in their route. [2]
In March 1995, the line was split into two routes in order to simplify the line.
Route D6 was split to operate between Sibley Hospital & the Stadium–Armory station, via Washington Union Station, instead of operating to Washington Hospital Center in order to replace the segment of the former routes 40, 42, and 44 between Union Station and Stadium–Armory station when both 40 and 44 were discontinued and 42 was shortened to operate between Mount Pleasant and Metro Center station. Route D8 was also split to only operate between Washington Hospital Center Washington Union Station. The segment of D8's routing west of Union Station was replaced by routes D1, D3, and D6. At the same time, the D8 replaced the segment of D6's former routing between Union Station and Washington Hospital Center, via Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood station. [3]
As a result, as route D6 became a part of the Sibley Hospital–Stadium Armory Line , which operated alongside routes D1 and D3 while route D8 became a part of the Hospital Center Line. [3]
In 2014, WMATA proposed to shorten the D8 to Rhode Island Avenue station and to have a new Route D7 to operate between Rhode Island Avenue and the hospital campus in order to Improve reliability of service by operating shorter routes, Reduce the number of buses operating on the congested hospital roadways, and Create a better balance of capacity and demand throughout the line. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the route was reduced to operate on its Saturday supplemental schedule during the weekdays beginning on March 16, 2020. [5] On March 18, 2020, the line was further reduced to operate on its Sunday schedule. [6] Weekend service was later suspended on March 21, 2020. [7] Additional service and weekend service was restored on August 23, 2020. [8]
In February 2021, WMATA propose to eliminate the D8 if they not get any federal funding. [9]
The Mount Pleasant Line, designated Routes 42 and 43, is a daily bus route in Washington, D.C., It was a streetcar line until the 1960s.
The Connecticut Avenue Line, designated Route L2, is a daily bus route in Northwest Washington, D.C., United States. The L2 operates seven days a week.
The College Park Line, designated Routes 83 & 86, are daily bus routes operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between the Rhode Island Avenue Station, which is served by Red Line of the Washington Metro, and the Cherry Hill Park Campground in College Park, Maryland (83), or Calverton (86). 83 is shortened to only operate on short trips between Rhode Island Avenue station and Mount Rainier during early mornings on the weekends. 83 & 86 mainly operate on the U.S. Route 1 corridor between Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast Washington, D.C. & College Park, Maryland. Route 83 trips are roughly 50 minutes long and route 86 trips are roughly 70 minutes long.
The Kenilworth Avenue Line, designated Route R12, is a bus route that operates Monday to Saturday that is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Greenbelt station of the Green Line of the Washington Metro and Deanwood station of the Orange Line of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 30 minutes during peak hours and 60 minutes other times. Trips are roughly 45 minutes.
The Rhode Island Avenue–New Carrollton Line, designated Route T14, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between the New Carrollton station of the Orange Line of the Washington Metro and Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood station of the Red Line of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 20–25 during the peak periods and 60 minutes during the weekday middays and on the weekends. Route T14 trips roughly take 50 minutes.
The Langley Park–Cheverly Line, designated Route F8, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between the Cheverly Metro station of the Orange Line of the Washington Metro and Takoma – Langley Crossroads Transit Center in Langley Park, Maryland. The line operates every 30–35 minutes during peak hours and every 60–65 minutes at all other times. F8 trips are roughly 54–60 minutes.
The Chillum Road Line, designated as Route F1 is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Cheverly station of the Orange Line of the Washington Metro and Takoma station of the Red Line. The line operates every 25–38 minutes during peak hours, 60 minutes during weekday off peak hours, and 58–62 minutes on the weekends. Trips roughly take 50–60 minutes.
The Eastover–Addison Road Line, designated Route P12, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between the Addison Road station of the Blue & Silver Lines of the Washington Metro and Eastover Shopping Center in Forest Heights, Maryland. The line operates every 12 minutes between 7AM and 9PM and 30 minutes after 9PM. P12 trips are roughly 60 minutes long.
The Bladensburg Road-Anacostia Line, designated as Route B2, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Anacostia station of the Green Line of the Washington Metro & Mount Rainier Terminal in Mount Rainier. Route B2 operates every 10 - 20 minutes at all times. B2 trips are roughly 56 minutes to complete.
The East Capitol Street–Cardozo Line, designated Route 96, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Tenleytown-AU station of the Red Line of the Washington Metro and Capitol Heights station of the Blue and Silver Lines of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 20–30 minutes at all times. Route 96 trips are roughly 80 minutes long.
The Takoma–Fort Totten Line designated as Route K2 is a Metrobus Route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between the Fort Totten Metro Station of the Red and Green Lines and Takoma Metro Station of the Red Line of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 20 minutes during weekday peak hours only with trips taking 15 minutes to complete.
The Deanwood–Alabama Avenue Line, designated Route W4, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Deanwood station of the Orange Line of the Washington Metro and Anacostia station of the Green Line of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 12 minutes daily between 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM and 20 minutes other times. Route W4 trips are roughly 60 minutes long.
The Arlington–Union Station Line, designated Route 13Y, was a bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Union Station in Northwest DC. The line operated during the weekend early AM hours only between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM providing riders to National Airport prior to Metro's opening at 7:00 AM. The line was discontinued due to low ridership and replaced by route 10N.
The Anacostia–Eckington Line, designated Route P6, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood station of the Red Line of the Washington Metro and Anacostia station of the Green Line of the Washington Metro With late night and early morning trips shortened to operate between Anacostia station of the Green Line of the Washington Metro and L'Enfant Plaza station of the Blue, Orange, Silver, Green and Yellow Lines of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 15–20 minutes during the weekday peak hours, 24 minutes during the weekday midday, and 30–35 minutes during the late nights and weekends. Route P6 trips are roughly 65 minutes long.
The Sibley Hospital–Stadium Armory Line, designated Route D6, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Stadium–Armory station of the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines of the Washington Metro and Sibley Hospital in the Palisades neighborhood. The line operates every 15 minutes during the weekday peak hours, 20 minutes during the off-peak hours, and 30-40 minutes during the late nights. Route D6 trips are roughly 60-90 minutes long.
The Glover Park–Franklin Square Line, designated Route D1, is a weekday peak hour bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Glover Park and Franklin Square. The line operates in the weekday peak direction only every 8-20 minutes during the AM weekday peak hours and 30 minutes during the PM peak hours. Route D1 trips are roughly 40 minutes long.
The Glover Park–Dupont Circle Line, designated Route D2, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Glover Park and Dupont Circle station of the Red Line of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 20-24 minutes during the day and every 40 minutes during the evening. Route D2 trips are roughly 20 minutes long.
The Crosstown Line, designated Routes H2 and H4, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Brookland–CUA station and Tenleytown–AU station of the Red Line of the Washington Metro. The line operates every 24 minutes between 7AM and 9PM, and 20 - 40 minutes after 9PM at a combined frequency of 12 minutes during the day and, 20 minutes during the late nights. Trips roughly take 48 minutes to complete.
The Ivy City–Franklin Square Line, designated Route D4, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Ivy City and Franklin Square. The line operates every 17-20 minutes during the weekday peak-hours, and 30-35 minutes at all other times. Route D4 trips are roughly 32 minutes.
The Massachusetts Avenue Line, designated Route N2, N4, N6, is a daily bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between Friendship Heights station of the Red Line of the Washington Metro and Farragut Square in Downtown Washington DC. The line operates every 27 minutes during the weekdays and 40 minutes on weekends. Trips take roughly 45 minutes to complete.
