I Am Seven (stylized I AM SE7EN) is the third mini-album by South Korean recording artist Seven. It was released on October 14, 2016, under Eleven9 Entertainment and distributed by LOEN Entertainment. Following a hiatus lasting nearly five years, the record is his first release since his military service scandal in 2013 and departure from YG Entertainment the following year.

Background

Seven was subject to conscription in South Korea and enlisted for military service on March 19, 2013. [1] In June of that year, Seven was among three celebrities filmed "visiting illegal massage parlors that provide adult services while on official leave to perform at a concert"; he spent ten days in military prison for breaching regulations. [2] As a result, he split from longstanding girlfriend Park Han-byul. [3] He completed his service in December 2014; his contract with YG Entertainment expired the following February, with both parties mutually agreeing not to renew. [4] In his first endeavor thereafter, Seven was cast in the musical Elisabeth (2015). [5]

Seven's return to the music industry was first announced on December 31, 2015. [6] In addition to Rain, MC Mong, and Shin Hye-sung, Seven was among the singers who experienced commercial success in the 2000s who planned to release music in 2016. [7] Seven went on to invest ₩ 6,000,000,000 (US$5.15 million) in order to establish his own agency Eleven9 Entertainment. [8] Scheduled to be released as early as March, the mini-album would be first record under the agency. [9] The title I Am Seven represents a "fresh start" and serves as his reintroduction. [10]

Music structure

Seven took part in the songwriting, composing, and record production of all tracks on I Am Seven, a first in his career. [10] Musically, the record encompasses R&B, pop, dance, and funk. [11] "Give It to Me" is described as a "retro" funk song coupled with acoustic brass. [12] Written in midst of his military service, [13] "I'm Good" is slow-tempo R&B track. [14]

Release and promotion

A music video teaser for the song "I'm Good" was released on July 6, 2016; the full music video was published on the following day. [14] I Am Seven was announced as Seven's third mini-album on the September 29, with a release date of October 14, four years and eight months after his previous release Seven New Mini Album (2012). [15] On October 2, Seven previewed the lead single in Busan at the One Asia K-pop Concert. [16] The music video teaser for "Give It to Me" was published on October 11. [12]

I Am Seven and the music video for "Give It to Me" were simultaneously released on October 14. [17] Initiating the day prior, Seven began promoting the song by performing it on weekly music chart shows, including Mnet's M Countdown , [18] Korean Broadcasting System's (KBS) Music Bank , [19] Seoul Broadcasting System's (SBS) Inkigayo , [20] SBS MTV's The Show , [21] and MBC Music's Show Champion . [22]

Critical reception

Writing for TV Daily, Kim Ji-ha commended I Am Seven for its "impressive" and "addictive" beats and melodies; Kim Han-gil described the record as being "filled with high-quality songs", which allowed Seven to create a "unique ambience". [11] Rating the mini-album two and a half stars out of five, Lee Jong-min of Diffsound described it as a "reckless challenge" which resulted in a "crushing defeat". [23] Due to his military scandal, the mini-album received negative sentiments on online music stores, where netizens contributed to the album's low ratings. [13]

Commercial performance

On the chart dated October 9–15, 2016, I Am Seven debuted at number eight on the Gaon Album Chart. [24] By the end of the month, the record sold 4,285 copies in South Korea. [25] In Japan, the mini-album debuted at number 245 on the weekly Oricon Albums Chart, selling 226 copies in its first week. It sold an additional 269 copies in its second week, ranking at number 233. [26]

Digital Bounce is the first mini-album by South Korean recording artist Seven. It was released in South Korea on July 21, 2010, under YG Entertainment. After releasing his fourth studio album Sevolution in 2006, Seven spent the next three years working on entering the American music market. After the unsuccessful stint, he returned to South Korea and began recording songs for Digital Bounce. The album features a heavier presence of electronic dance music than Seven's previous albums, but still incorporates his signature R&B and pop sound.

DMTN

DMTN, formerly Dalmatian (달마시안), is a South Korean idol group created and managed by MC Mong under Monkey Funch Entertainment. The original lineup consisted of Inati, Day Day, Donglim, Jeesu, Dari, and Daniel. Dalmatian released a 30-second music video teaser of their debut digital single "Round 1" on August 25, 2010. It was followed by the song and video's full release on September 1, 2010 and the group made their debut performance the following day on Mnet's music program M! Countdown.

Bestie (group) South Korean girl group

Bestie was a South Korean girl group formed by YNB Entertainment. They released their debut single, "Pitapat", in July 2013. The group was composed of four members, Hyeyeon, Uji, Dahye and Haeryung. While Uji and Dahye parted their ways with YNB Entertainment in September 2017, the group disbanded in 2018 following the news of Hyeyeon joining Star Entertainment.

<i>2gether</i> (CNBLUE album) 2015 studio album by CNBLUE

2gether is the second studio album by South Korean pop rock idol band CNBLUE. It was released on September 14, 2015, under FNC Entertainment. After ending domestic promotions for Can't Stop (2014), the band concentrated on individual activities; most notably, frontman Jung Yong-hwa released his debut solo album One Fine Day (2015) in January. The remaining band members sought out opportunities in television, particularly in acting, variety show appearances, and MCing. In August 2015, it was announced that CNBLUE would release its second studio album after an absence lasting one year and seven months. With 2gether, the band decided to change the direction of its music; it stripped itself of the acoustic tracks it was known for and explored electronic dance music in order to create a particular color and form a distinctive sound.

Min Kyung-hoon is a South Korean singer and television personality. He is the lead vocalist of the rock band Buzz and one-half of the duo Universe Cowards with Kim Hee-chul. His first solo album, Im·pres·sive, was released on December 5, 2007. His second solo album, Picnic, was released on June 27, 2011. He is a regular cast member of South Korean variety show Knowing Brothers (JTBC) and Problem Child in the House (KBS).

Kim Se-jeong South Korean singer

Kim Se-jeong, better known by the mononym Sejeong, is a South Korean singer and actress signed under Jellyfish Entertainment. She was the runner-up contestant in Mnet's survival show Produce 101, and debuted as member of the girl group I.O.I. She's also a former member of Gugudan and its subgroup Gugudan SeMiNa, following the group's disbandment, she's currently active as a solo artist and actress.

KNK is a South Korean boy group formed in 2016. KNK is an initialism which stands for K-pop knock, meaning "to knock on the door of K-pop with their music." They held their debut showcase on February 29, 2016 and officially released their debut single album titled Knock on March 3, 2016. The group currently consists of five members, Seoham, Inseong, Jihun, Heejun and Dongwon. Original member Youjin departed from the group on September 10, 2018.

Gugudan South Korean girl group

Gugudan (Korean: 구구단), also stylized as gu9udan or gx9, was a South Korean girl group formed in 2016 by Jellyfish Entertainment. The group debuted on June 28, 2016, with their EP Act. 1 The Little Mermaid. The group was composed of eight members: Mimi, Hana, Haebin, Nayoung, Sejeong, Sally, Soyee and Mina. Originally a nine-piece group, Hyeyeon left the group in October 2018.

Myname 1st Mini Album topped South Korea's national Gaon Album Chart, shifting over 35,000 units domestically since its release.

Dongkiz South Korean music group

Dongkiz is a South Korean idol group signed to Dongyo Entertainment. The group consists of five members: Wondae, Kyoungyoon, Munik, Jaechan, and Jonghyeong. They promoted a pre-debut song entitled "Nom" from November 2018, which ultimately served as the lead single from the single album Dongkiz on the Block the following April. The group released a second single album BlockBuster and a mini-album Dongky Town within the year. Dongkiz received the Focus Award at the 2019 Asia Artist Awards.

It was released by Play M Entertainment on April 13, 2020, one year and three months after their last EP Percent (2019), the group's longest break since debut. <i>D-Hours AM 7:03</i> Kim Dong-han EP

D-Hours AM 7:03 is the third mini-album by South Korean singer Kim Dong-han. It was released on May 1, 2019, by Oui Entertainment and distributed by Genie Music and Stone Music Entertainment. The record's title reflects the beginning and end of someone's day, as well as Kim's birthday. He contributed to the lyrics of all the tracks on the album, which were written amidst his travel schedule.

<i>What Do I Call You</i> 2020 EP by Taeyeon

What Do I Call You is the fourth Korean-language extended play and the seventh overall by South Korean singer Taeyeon. The EP was released on December 15, 2020, by SM Entertainment and consists of six tracks, including the title track of the same name and her previous digital single "Happy".
