The song was translated into Japanese by Kenji Sazanami [28] as "Sukisa Sukisa Sukisa" (好きさ好きさ好きさ) and recorded by Tokyo band the Carnabeats (ザ・カーナビーツ), [29] a Japanese Group Sounds band, [30] [31] [32] with 16-year-old drummer Ai Takano singing the lead vocal. [31] On 1 June 1967 the single was released in Japan by Philips Records, backed with a cover of "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman (口笛天国)". [33] [34] [35] The single debuted at #7 in the local charts in September 1967, [36] before peaking at #2 on 4 November 1967. [37] "Sukisa Sukisa Sukisa", the band's first and biggest hit, [31] was included on their debut album Carnabeats First Album, [38] which was released in 1968, [38] [39] and re-released in 2003 by Teichiku Records. [40] After several more singles, and their only album, The Carnabeats disbanded in the Fall of 1969. [29]

The success of The Carnabeats' Japanese version of "I Love You" in Japan, resulted in the original version by The Zombies being released in Japan, [29] where it was a best-selling hit and was ranked #8 for the year of 1967. [41]

The 1991 cover version of the Carnabeats' "Sukisa Sukisa Sukisa" by Mi-Ke reached number 9 on the Oricon Singles Chart. [42] This version includes vocals by Ai Takano. [43]
