It was the nation's largest ever delegation sent to the Olympics, with a total of 30 athletes, 21 men and 9 women, in 6 sports. Trinidad and Tobago's participation in these games marked its sixteenth Olympic appearance as an independent nation, although it had previously competed in four other games as a British colony, and as part of the West Indies Federation. The nation was awarded four Olympic medals based on the efforts by the athletes who competed in the track and field. Javelin thrower Keshorn Walcott became the first Trinidadian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal since the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where Hasely Crawford won for the sprint event. Marc Burns, a four-time Olympic athlete and a relay sprinter who led his team by winning the silver medal in Beijing, was the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony.
The 2000 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics was the ninth edition of the international athletics competition between Ibero-American nations which was held at the Estádio Célio de Barros in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 20 and 21 May. With a total of 308 athletes, the number of competitors was the lowest since 1990. The Spanish team was much smaller than previous delegations as most of the Spaniards chose to focus on the 2000 Sydney Olympics instead. Other national teams used the competition as a chance to gain an Olympic qualifying mark.

He won the gold medal for his category at the 2005 European Junior Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania, with a personal best throw of 77.25 metres. In 2010, Smalios improved his own record to 80.77 metres at the European Athletics Outdoor Classic Meeting in Kalamata. A few months later, he applied for and was granted Swedish citizenship in order to compete internationally for his birth nation.

Resende, however, narrowly missed out of the medal podium, when she placed fifth in the final at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, with a best throw of 57.95 metres.

Rafeeq Curry is an American triple jumper. He is a 2002 U.S. junior champion, a 2006 NCAA outdoor triple jump champion, a nine-time All-American, two-time East Regional champion, six-time Atlantic Coast Conference titleholder, 2011 USA indoor Champion. Curry currently holds FSU's indoor and outdoor records for the triple jump. He also posted a personal best of 17.22 metres by winning the men's triple jump at the NCAA East Regional Meet in Tallahassee, Florida. Curry is a member of the track and field team for the Florida Seminoles, and a graduate of Florida State University.

She performed the best throw of 53.24 metres, on her first attempt, finishing forty-fifth overall in the qualifying rounds.
