India Mobile Congress 2018 (IMC) was a technology event and international conference jointly organised by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. IMC 2018 was the second edition of the iconic India Mobile Congress event that is held annually in New Delhi, India. It was held at Aerocity, New Delhi from 25 October 2018 to 27 October 2018. [1]
The main thrust area at IMC 2018 was the potential of 5G technology and its use cases. [2] A number of companies presented their roadmaps for their readiness for deployment of 5G technology in India. [3] The India Mobile Congress 2018 was awarded as "The Knowledge Hub" at Exhibition Excellence Awards 2019 held in Expo Center, Greater Noida in March 2019.
The inauguration of IMC2018 took place on 25 October 2019, around 10am. The three-day international event was inaugurated by Manoj Sinha, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications and Minister of State for Railways. A number of important industry stakeholders, ministers and experts attended the inaugural session, such as: [4] [5]
The crowd of over 5000 visitors for the inaugural ceremony included policy makers, ambassadors, opinion makers, change agents, bureaucrats and investors from over 20 countries. [6]
The high caliber three-day international conference is one of the main things that sets India Mobile Congress apart from other technology and telecom exhibitions in the region. IMC attracts the biggest and the most famous international speakers in the telecom and technology space and that makes it a popular choice for Indian and foreign delegates, including tech enthusiasts, young professionals, businessmen, industry leaders, analysts, media persons and students. IMC 2019 also saw the presence of high-level ministerial delegations from several BIMSTEC and ASEAN countries. Ministers from the European Commission, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Lao PDR led their respective delegations, and participated in plenary sessions that were focused on the specific needs, challenges, and opportunities applicable to member countries of these regional forums. Reliance Communications Limited (RCOM) was an Indian mobile network provider headquartered in Navi Mumbai that offered voice and 2G and 3G and 4G data services. In February 2019, the company filed for bankruptcy as it was unable to sell assets to repay its debt. It has an estimated debt of ₹500 billion against assets worth ₹180 billion.
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani is an Indian billionaire businessman. He is the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL), a Fortune Global 500 company and India's most valuable company by market value. According to Forbes and Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ambani's net worth is estimated at US$93.8 billion as of 29 November 2022, making him the second richest person in Asia after Gautam Adani and the 8th richest in the world.
Anil Dhirubhai Ambani is an Indian businessman. He was the chairman of Reliance Group, which was created in July 2006 following a demerger from Reliance Industries Limited. He leads a number of stocks listed corporations including Reliance Capital, Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Power and Reliance Communications. Ambani, once the sixth richest person in the world, declared before a UK court in February 2020 that his net worth is zero and he is bankrupt, although the veracity of that claim is in question. Bharti Airtel clocked revenues of over US$14.75 billion in FY2016. In 2022 he was ranked the 11th richest person in India by Forbes, with an estimated net worth of US$14.5 billion.
Kumar Mangalam Birla is an Indian billionaire industrialist, philanthropist, Chartered Accountant and the chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, one of the largest global conglomerates in India. He is also the chancellor of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani and Chairman of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. It operates in 18 countries across South Asia and Africa, as well as the Channel Islands. Currently, Airtel provides 4G and 4G+ services all over India and 5G service in selected cities. Currently offered services include fixed-line broadband, and voice services depending upon the country of operation. Airtel had also rolled out its VoLTE technology across all Indian telecom circles. It is the second largest mobile network operator in India and the second largest mobile network operator in the world. Airtel was named India's 2nd most valuable brand in the first ever Brandz ranking by Millward Brown and WPP plc.
Bharti Enterprises is an Indian multinational conglomerate, headquartered in Delhi. It was founded in 1976 by Sunil Mittal. Bharti Enterprises owns businesses spanning across manufacturing, telecommunications, agribusiness, real estate, hospitality, agri and food. The group's flagship company, Bharti Airtel, is a telecom service provider with operations in more than 18 countries across Asia, North America, Africa & Europe. The company ranks amongst the top two mobile network operators globally in terms of subscribers.
Aircel Ltd. was an Indian mobile network operator headquartered in Mumbai that offered voice and 2G and 3G data services. Maxis Communications held a 74% stake and Sindya Securities and Investments held the remaining 26%. Aircel was founded by Chinnakannan Sivasankaran and commenced operations in Tamil Nadu in 1999. It was once a market leader in Tamil Nadu and had considerable presence in Odisha, Assam and North-East telecom circles. 2G and 3G Services including voice were shut down in all circles after failure of merger talks with Reliance Communications.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) is an Indian non-governmental trade association and advocacy group focused mainly on telecommunications industry. COAI was constituted in 1995 as a registered, non-governmental society. As of 2017, COAI has been (jointly) organizing the India Mobile Congress with the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India.
Airtel India, commonly known as Airtel, is the second largest provider of mobile telephony and third largest provider of fixed telephony in India, and is also a provider of broadband and subscription television services. As of 31 October 2022, Vi has a subscriber base of 245.62 million, making it third largest mobile telecommunications network in India and 11 th largest mobile telecommunications network in the world. The company was created on 31 August 2018 by the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, to form a new entity named Vodafone Idea Limited.
Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, doing business as Jio, is an Indian telecommunications company and a subsidiary of Jio Platforms, headquartered in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It operates a national LTE network with coverage across all 22 telecom circles. Currently, Jio offers 4G and 4G+ services all over India and 5G service in selected cities. Its 6G service is in the works.
Idea Cellular (commonly referred to as Idea, and stylised as !dea) was an Indian mobile network operator based at Mumbai, Maharashtra. Idea was a pan-India integrated GSM operator and had 220.00 million subscribers as of June 2018. Idea Cellular merged with Vodafone India and is now known as Vodafone Idea or Vi.
The India Mobile Congress (IMC) is the largest digital technologies forum in Asia, consisting of a three-day international conference and a technology exhibition. The event is envisioned to be the "leading platform for India's start-up and technology ecosystem." Within the telecommunications and technology industry, IMC is already known as the "largest digital technology forum in Asia." The mega-event is organised jointly by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India. The forum aims to be a platform for industry, businesses, regulators and policy makers to discuss and deliberate on critical issues affecting the growth and proliferation of the telecom and technology sector. In the first two editions, IMC was focused on the transformative technology of 5G and most of the booths showcased various use-cases and scenarios where 5G would play an important role; the exhibitors included service providers, OEMs and infrastructure providers.
