Infierno en el Ring is the name of an annual professional wrestling super show or pay-per-view (PPV) event held by the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) since 2008. The term Infierno en el Ring is also the "brand name" used by CMLL for a multi-man steel cage match where the last man in the cage is either forced to unmask or have his hair shaved off. Before 2008 the Infierno en el Ring match was the main event of other shows such as the Entre Torre Infernal show in 2000 and the CMLL 74th Anniversary Show in 2007. 19 matches have taken place so far with the most recent being the 2016 Infierno en el Ring, which took place on December 25, 2016.

Match type

The Infierno en el Ring match is a steel cage match where all the competitors are locked in the cage during the match. After a certain time interval, between three and eight minutes traditionally, the wrestlers are allowed to escape the cage by climbing over the top and to the floor. The last two wrestlers remaining in the cage then wrestled against each other under Lucha de Apuestas (bet match) rules inside the steel cage. Whoever loses the match is forced to either unmask or have their hair shaved off per Lucha Libre traditions.

History

The very first Infierno en el Ring was actually promoted as Torre Infernal, Spanish for "Infernal Tower" and was the main event of CMLL's Entre Torre Infernal ("In the Infernal Tower") pay-per-view (PPV) and featured four wrestlers who all put their hair on the line in the match. Máscara Año 2000 lost when Perro Aguayo pinned him. [1] Subsequently, CMLL began promoting all multi-man Steel cage matches that had Lucha de Apuesta (bet match) rules as Infierno en el Ring. CMLL would use the Infierno en el Ring concept the following year as the main event of the CMLL 69th Anniversary Show where 7 wrestlers risked either their hair or their mask on the outcome of the match. In addition the winning side would earn the rights to the name Los Infernales as well. So far the match at the 69th Anniversary Show is the only match to feature a mixture of hair or masks being bet as well as an additional stipulation. In the end El Satánico pinned Máscara Mágica, forcing him to unmask as well as earning his team the rights to be known as Los Infernales. [2]

The next Infierno en el Ring match took place three years after the Anniversary event, on July 18, 2004 and featured six unmasked, main event level wrestlers risking their hair. The finals came down to Perro Aguayo Jr. and his mentor Negro Casas and saw Aguayo Jr. betray Casas, leaving his mentor to have his hair shaved off after the match. This turn was the catalyst to Perro Aguayo Jr. forming the Perros del Mal stable. CMLL repeated the event the following year on June 17 as the main event of a CMLL Super Viernes show. The match featured 9 men in total as the storyline between Los Perros del Mal and other CMLL rudos (bad guys) heated up, with CMLL's top fan favorite Místico added to the match. In the end Damián 666 escaped the cage, leaving Máscara Magica to lose his second Infierno en el Ring match and had his hair shaved off. [3]

The 2006 Infierno en el Ring match was the first to carry the stipulation that the last two wrestlers would have to wrestle in a regular match instead of escaping the cage. The match took place on July 14, 2006 and featured only masked wrestlers, mainly mid-card level wrestlers all risking their masks in the match. In the end the young Misterioso II defeated the experienced Pantera to unmask him. [4]

The Infierno en el Ring concept was used instead of the traditional big singles match CMLL usually books for their Anniversary shows as they booked an eight-man Infierno en el Ring match as the main event of the CMLL 74th Anniversary Show in 2007. The main event saw all eight men put their masks on the line in the cage, ending with Blue Panther pinning Lizmark Jr. to win the match. [5] The following year CMLL introduced an event called Infierno en el Ring , dedicating an entire event to the cage match. That year's cage match saw 10 wrestlers risk their hair in the match. The finals saw El Texano Jr. defeat Heavy Metal, costing him all his hair. [6]

CMLL used the Infierno en el Ring five times during 2009, the most of any year. They started the year off with a special Mini-Estrella match, featuring 13 masked Mini-Estrellas facing off. The finals came down to Pierrothito and Shockercito with Pierrothito taking the victory. [7] CMLL held another Mini-Estrellas only cage match on March 3, 2009 in Puebla, Puebla where Mascarita Dorada defeated Sombrita in the final two [8] That was followed by a match that saw Mini-Estrellas and regular sized competitors mixed together for an Infierno en el Ring on August 18, 2009 where Mini-Estrella Pierrothito pinned regular sized competitor Rafaga to become the only man to win two Infierno en el Ring matches. [9] CMLL also held their annual Infierno en el Ring event in 2009, this time a 15-man cage match with everyone putting their hair on the line. The match served as the start of the "Mexico vs. Japan" storyline that ran for the rest of 2009 as New Japan Pro-Wrestling visitor Naito pinned Toscano to take Toscano's hair. [10] The fifth and last Infierno en el Ring match in 2009 took place on October 18, 2009 and featured a mixture of young wrestlers trying to make a name for themselves and experienced mid-card wrestlers with the prime of their careers behind them. The final saw the young rudo (bad guy) Pólvora pin the experienced tecnico (good guy) Tigre Blanco to unmask him. [11]

CMLL held the only Infierno en el Ring in 2010, the Infierno en el Ring supercard on June 18, 2010. The match featured 12 wrestlers who put their mask on the line in the match. Like the October, 2009 match this cage match featured a mixture of young wrestlers looking to climb up the ranks of CMLL and experienced mid-card wrestlers. The match was the first time two tecnicos ended up as the finalists and saw Ángel de Oro pin Fabián el Gitano to unmask him [12]

So far nine of the 19 matches have featured wrestlers putting their mask on the line and seven risking their hair with a couple of the events featuring mixed bets. Two of the 19 matches have featured CMLL's Mini-Estrella division, one has been mixed, two featured all female competitors and the rest have featured CMLL's regular male division. The first match had the fewest participants with just four, while two of the Infierno en el Ring matches featured 15, the most of any event so far. Only two men, Pierrothito and Máscara Magica, have been part of the final two for multiple matches with Pierrothito being the only wrestler to win two Infierno en el RingApuesta matches and Máscara Magica being the only wrestler to lose two.

Also known as

CMLL is not the only Mexican wrestling promotion to promote multi-man steel cage matches under Lucha de Apuesta rules. In Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) such a match is referred to as Domo de la Muete ("Dome of Death") and in International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG) they promote an annual Castillo del Terror ("Castle of Terror") with similar rules.

Arturo García Ortiz is a Mexican luchador or professional wrestler best known under the ring name Rey Bucanero. Ortiz, as Rey Bucanero, has worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) since 1996. His ring name is Spanish for "Buccaneer King", which was originally reflected in his mask that featured a skull face and an eye patch. Ortiz was unmasked in 1999 and has worked unmasked ever since.

Triplemanía III-A 1995 Lucha Libre AAA World Wide event

Triplemanía III-A was the first of three parts of the third Triplemanía professional wrestling show series promoted by Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA). 1995 was second year to feature the "Triplemanía Series" of shows with 3, referred to as III-A, III-B and III-C. The show took place on June 10, 1995 in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. The Main event featured a 13-wrestler Steel Cage Elimination match, Lucha de Apuestas "Mask vs. Mask" match featuring the "Mini-Estrellas" division. The participants included Ninjita, Espectrito I, Espectrito II, Jerrito Estrada, Fuercita Guerrera, Mascarita Sagrada, Mini Calo, Octagoncito, La Parkita, Payasito Rojo, Payasito Azul, Super Muñequito, and Torerito. This marked the first and so far only time that the "Minis division" was featured in the main event of a Triplemanía. The show also featured the first of three Lucha de Apuestas, mask vs. mask match series for the Triplemanía III shows as the culmination of a storyline feud between the tecnico team of Super Caló and Winners against the Rudo team known as Los Diabolicos. Six of the eight matches were later shown on AAA's weekly Televisa show.

Pierrothito Mexican professional wrestler

Pierrothito is a Mexican luchador enmascarado, or masked professional wrestler. Pierrothito is a part of Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre's (CMLL) Mini-Estrella, or "Mini", division and is a former CMLL World Mini-Estrella Champion. He is also the first Mini to have held the Mexican National Lightweight Championship. Pierrothito is Spanish for "Little Pierroth", alluding to the fact that he wrestles as a mini version of Pierroth, Jr.; he is sometimes billed as "Mini Pierroth" or "Pequeño Pierroth". Pierrothito's real name is not a matter of public record, as is often the case with masked wrestlers in Mexico where their private lives are kept a secret from the wrestling fans.

Último Dragoncito Mexican professional wrestler

Último Dragoncito is a Tapatío Mexican luchador enmascarado, or masked professional wrestler. Último Dragoncito is a part of Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre's (CMLL) Mini-Estrella, or "Mini", division and is the only wrestler to hold the CMLL World Mini-Estrella Championship two times. Último Dragoncito is Spanish for "Little Last Dragon", alluding to the fact that he wrestles as a mini version of Último Dragón. Último Dragoncito's real name is not a matter of public record, as is often the case with masked wrestlers in Mexico where their private lives are kept a secret from the wrestling fans. He originally worked as Misteriosito from his debut until 1992 when he was given his current ring name.

Antonio Gómez Medina is a Mexican professional wrestler, or Luchador as they are called in Spanish, and professional wrestling trainer based out of Arena Coliseo Guadalajara in Guadalajara. Gómez is best known under the ring name Máscara Mágica; he is the second person to use the "Máscara Mágica" name, taking it over after Eddie Guerrero abandoned the name in the early 1990s. As Máscara Mágica, he was part of the Los Nuevo Infernales group; as part of a Los Nuevo Inferales vs. Los Infernales storyline, and lost his mask as a result of a Luchas de Apuestas match loss to Los Infernales leader El Satánico. In recent years Gómez has focused more on his training position at Arena Coliseo Guadalajara, where he also works as a booker and part-time wrestler.

Olímpico Mexican professional wrestler

Joel Bernal Galicia is a Mexican Luchador, or professional wrestler retired, better known under the ring name Olímpico. Olímpico is sometimes Anglicised as "Olympico", and means "Olympian" in Spanish. From his debut in 1992 until late 2008 Olímpico worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL); since then he has worked for promotions including Perros del Mal, International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG), World Wrestling Association (WWA) and other promotions on the Mexican independent circuit before returning to CMLL in mid-2010 as part of Los Invasores. For many years Olimpico's real name was not a matter of public record, as is often the case with masked wrestlers in Mexico where their private lives are kept a secret from the wrestling fans. He was unmasked on September 3, 2010, and had to reveal his real name as is traditional.

Mascarita Dorada Mexican professional wrestler

Mascarita Dorada, is the ring name of a Mexican Luchador enmascarado, or masked professional wrestler, who works in the Mini-Estrella division, comparable to midget wrestling. He is also known for his tenure with WWE under the ring name El Torito.

Máscara Año 2000

Jesús Reyes González is a Mexican Luchador, or professional wrestler, best known under the ring name Máscara Año 2000 or Máscara Año Dos Mil. His ring name is Spanish for "Mask of the year 2000", originally referring to the mask Reyes wore while wrestling. Reyes was forced to unmask when he lost a Lucha de Apuesta to Perro Aguayo in 1993. Throughout his career Reyes has often teamed with his two brothers Carmelo, who wrestles as Cien Caras and the late Andrés, who wrestled as Universo 2000, the three were collectively known as Los Hermanos Dinamita or Los Capos when they teamed with Apolo Dantés. Reyes has earned the nickname "El Padre de más de 20" by wrestling commentators even though he does not quite have 20 children.

The CMLL 68th Anniversary Show was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced and scripted by Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre that took place on September 28, 2001 in Arena México, Mexico City, Mexico. The event commemorated the 68th anniversary of CMLL, the oldest professional wrestling promotion in the world. The Anniversary show is CMLL's biggest show of the year, their Super Bowl event. The CMLL Anniversary Show series is the longest-running annual professional wrestling show, starting in 1934.

Sin Piedad (2000) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view produced by Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), which took place on December 15, 2000, in Arena México, Mexico City, Mexico. The 2000 Sin Piedad was the first event under that name that CMLL promoted as their last major show of the year, always held in December. The main event of the pay-per-view was a Lucha de Apuestas, hair vs. hair match between Cien Caras and Perro Aguayo. The show also featured a tag team match for the CMLL World Tag Team Championship where the champions Los Guerreros del Infierno defended the championship against the team of El Hijo del Santo and Negro Casas. The show featured an additional tag team match and three six-man "Lucha Libre rules" tag team matches.

Shockercito Mexican professional wrestler

Javier Cortes Sánchez is a Mexican Luchador, or professional wrestler who works for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in their Mini-Estrella division. Cortés is better known under the ring name Shockercito, a mascota version of wrestler Shocker. Cortés was originally an enmascarado, (masked) character, but was forced to unmask after losing a Lucha de Apuesta, or bet match, on January 11, 2009. Working in the Mini division does not necessarily mean that Cortés has dwarfism as several short wrestlers work in the "Mini" division, which is what separates the Mexican Mini-Estrella from traditional Midget wrestling as practiced in the United States among other places.

Infierno en el Ring (2010) was a professional wrestling supercard produced by Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), which took place on June 18, 2010 in Arena Mexico, Mexico City, Mexico. Previous year's Infierno en el Ring events have been held on Fridays, replacing CMLL's regularly scheduled Super Viernes show, but in 2010 the event was held on Sunday night instead. The 2010 Infierno en el Ring is the third show under that name and the 13th time CMLL have promoted an Infierno en el Ring cage match.

Pequeño Violencia is a Mexican Luchador who has worked in the Mexican Mini-Estrella division since his debut in 1990. As Pequeño Violencia he wrestles as a smaller version of professional wrestler Violencia. He previously wrestled under the ring name El Fierito, a smaller version of wrestler La Fiera. Working in the Mini division does not necessarily mean that he has dwarfism as several short wrestlers work in the "Mini" division, which is what separates the Mexican Mini-Estrella from traditional Midget wrestling as practiced in the United States and other places.

Dalys la Caribeña is a Panamanian luchadora, or female professional wrestler currently working for the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), where she is the current CMLL Japanese Women's Champion in her first reign. Her name appears in print as Dalys la Caribeña, Dalys, Dallys and Dalis but all refer to the same person. Her name means Daly "The Caribbean Girl". She is a second-generation wrestler, her father is a retired wrestler turned wrestling promoter in Panama, her brother wrestles in Mexico under the ring name Veneno and she is related through marriage to Negro Casas to the extended Casas wrestling family.

Sin Piedad (2004) was an annual professional wrestling major event produced by Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), which took place on December 17, 2004 in Arena México, Mexico City, Mexico and replaced CMLL's regular Friday night show Super Viernes. The 2004 Sin Piedad was the fifth event under that name that CMLL promoted as their last major show of the year, always held in December. The main event of the show was a tag team Lucha de Apuestas between the team of Pierroth and Vampiro Canadiense and Los Hermanos Dinamita. Both teams risked their hair on the outcome of the match, with the losing team being shaved totally bald after the match. The show included five additional matches, including a match for the Mexican National Trios Championship.

Javier Teucli Roldán (born July 3, 1968, in Puebla, Puebla, Mexico, is a retired Mexican Luchador or professional wrestler best known under the name Sombrita. Teucli also worked under the ring name Pequeño Bronce early in his career as a smaller version of the wrestling character Bronce. Teucli worked in the Mini-Estrella division his entire career, working in the Mini division does not necessarily mean that Teucli has dwarfism as several short wrestlers work in the "Mini" division, which is what separates the Mexican Mini-Estrella from traditional Midget wrestling as practiced in the United States among other places.

<i>Infierno en el Ring</i> (2016) Mexican professional wrestling supercard show

Infierno en el Ring (2016) was a major professional wrestling event produced and scripted by the Mexican lucha libre promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) that took place on Friday December 25, 2016 in Arena México, Mexico City, Mexico. The show replaced CMLL's regularly scheduled CMLL Super Viernes show as is tradition with most of CMLL's signature events. The 2016 event marked the eight time CMLL has held a show under that name with previous shows in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Each of the shows has featured a main event, multi-man steel cage match, contested under Lucha de Apuestas, or bet match rules referred to as Infierno en el Ring. According to the rules the loser of the match, the last person to remain in the cage, would be forced to have his hair shaved off per Lucha Libre traditions.
