Israel Lugo (born November 7, 1973) is an American actor, director and Latin Grammy Award-winner music video director. Lugo was born in Brooklyn, New York and has credits for directing the documentary Sonó, Sonó, Tité Curet!!! (2011) and for acting on Mi Dia de Suerte, The Apostate, El Clown and Che . Also he is known for his work with Gabriel Coss directing music videos for Calle 13, Nelly Furtado, Maná and Paulina Rubio, among others.

Acting career

Lugo began his career as a child actor on several TV shows such as Chiquimundo, Los 7 del 7, Los García and La Casa de María Chuzema. [1] Lugo also studied psychology at the University of Puerto Rico before returning to his acting career appearing on Mi Dia de Suerte, The Apostate, El Clown and Che . [1] In 2011, Lugo co-directed the documentary Sonó, Sonó, Tité Curet!!!. [2]

Career as music video director

In 2005 Lugo launched 939 films with Gabriel Coss. [1] They directed and produced "Atrévete-te-te" and "La Jirafa", from Calle 13's debut album. [1] [3] Lugo and Coss worked again with Calle 13 on the lead single from their album Residente o Visitante in 2007. [4] "Tango del Pecado", was shot in Puerto Rico and it was described as "the story of a catastrophe, a shameless Latin-American version of a Romeo and Juliet -type of love." [4] The video was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award in 2007 losing to "Ven a Mi Casa Esta Navidad" by Voz Veis. [5]

Lugo and Coss directed Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado's "All Good Things (Come to an End)", in a video that "finds Furtado frolicking with a male model in Puerto Rico." [6] About the video, Furtado stated: "It's very tropical and romantic. It reminds me of old Sarah McLachlan videos, it has that element of art to it. It's kind of like cinema." [6] Furtado recorded with Calle 13 a remix version of "No Hay Igual" and shot a video in La Perla, San Juan, Puerto Rico also directed by Lugo and Coss. [3]

The music video for "Bendita Tu Luz" by Mexican band Maná featuring Juan Luis Guerra was directed by Lugo and Coss and was shot at Santo Domingo in 2006. [7] Lugo and Coss received a Latin Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 2009 for "La Perla" by Calle 13 featuring Rubén Blades which was shot at slum of the same name. [8] [9] The music video for "Vamo' a Portarnos Mal", included on Entren Los Que Quieran by Calle 13, was directed by Lugo and Coss in 2010, with locations on Las Monjas, Barrio Obrero and Las Gladiolas at San Juan, Puerto Rico. They fuse rhythms of 'cumbia villera' native to Argentina, and rhythms of Balkan music. The album features collaborations with Rubén Blades, Café Tacuba, and Afrobeta. It won Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards and five Latin Grammys including Album of the Year at the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.

Rodríguez challenged the types of images seen in mainstream hip-hop videos with "Atrévete-te-te", with René Pérez (Residente), the band's lead singer, not wearing massive gold chains or drinking bottles of champagne, and questioning the current lifestyle of Puerto Ricans who try to emulate the American lifestyle.

Gabriel Coss is a Latin Grammy Award and a Regional Emmy Award-winner music video director. Coss also has credits for directing the documentaries Aljuriya (2004), Sonó, Sonó, Tité Curet!!! (2011) and Armonía. In 2005, Coss launched 939 Films with Israel Lugo, which they merged with Rojo Chiringa Films in 2007.

Alejandro Santiago Ciena was a Latin Grammy Award-winner music video director. He was the director of the production company Crema Batida Films, and also has credits as a second unit director for the Puerto-Rican film Manuela y Manuel (2007). Santiago Ciena was best known for his work directing music videos for the Puerto-Rican band Calle 13; Santiago Ciena was the cousin of René Pérez (Residente), the band's lead singer. The first video he directed for the band was "Calma Pueblo", the lead single of Entren Los Que Quieran in 2010. The video presented Calle 13 as terrorists dressed as nuns and was deemed as "violent" by Judy Cantor-Navas of Billboard magazine. Santiago Ciena, commented about the concept of the video, which uses nudity as a representation of freedom: "We wanted the lyrics and the visuals to be strong... we wanted it to be real, but still have a positive message to the show the union of people who fight to produce art." The video was recorded in Milla de Oro, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was intended as a tribute to the work of American photographer Spencer Tunick. Calle 13 and Santiago received the Latin Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video for "Calma Pueblo".

Vida (Life) is the twelfth studio album by Puerto Rican recording artist Draco Rosa, released on March 19, 2013 by Sony Music Latin. It consists of 16 duets of Rosa's hits featuring guest artists chosen personally by Rosa himself. This is the first album released by Draco after his non-hodgkin lymphoma cancer diagnosis near his liver on April 25, 2011. It is entitled Vida symbolizing Draco's recovery after his cancer treatment. The album won Album of the Year at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards and Best Latin Pop Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards.

iLe Puerto Rican singer; formerly with Calle 13

Ileana Mercedes Cabra Joglar, better known by the nickname "iLe", is a Puerto Rican singer, composer and vocalist. She began her musical career as a teenager as the sole female singer of Calle 13, a group she took part in for 10 years alongside her brothers René Pérez Joglar (Residente) and Eduardo Cabra Martínez (Visitante).
