Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya is a banned Islamist terrorist organization in Bangladesh. [1] [2] It has received support from the Kuki-Chin National Front. [3]

History

Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya was founded in 2017 by Shamin Mahfuz. [4] [5] It became active in 2019 and included former members of the Ansar Al Islam, Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh, and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh. [4] [6]

Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya established ties with Kuki-Chin National Front, an ethnic separatist group in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and its leader Nathan Bom to receive training. [5] One of the detained suspects was Rafat Sadik Saifullah, son of Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami but the police did not find any evidence of organizational ties between Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya. [7]

In October 2022, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit detained five members of Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya from Demra. [8] Rapid Action Battalion detained four members of Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya in November. [9]

Md Asaduzzaman of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime arrested Mohibullah also known as Bhola's Shaikh from Sayedabad. [10] Rapid Action Battalion detained four members from Chittagong after detaining four from Cox's Bazar following a gunfight. [11] [12] Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit detained its founder Shamin Mahfuz on 23 June 2023 from Demra, Dhaka and its Amer from Anisur Rahman alias Mahmud from Munshiganj District on 25 July. [13] Shamin received funding from sacked Bangladesh Army Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque. [13] [14]

According to Rapid Action Battalion, Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya is the most dangerous terrorist outfit in Bangladesh. [6] The group had trained 55 members in the Chittagong Hill Tracts under Kuki-Chin National Front. [6] [15] It received funding from local and foreign donors and owned a number of businesses. [6] Lieutenant Colonel Moshiur Rahman Jewel of Rapid Action Battalion described the group as well trained in firearms usage after reviewing training videos of the militant group. [6] Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya also guarded the bases of Kuki-Chin National Front in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and lost one member in a gunfight while defending the base. [6] The group had plans to establish a naval unit. [16]

Bangladesh banned the Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya on 10 August 2023; which was announced in a video message by Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Law and Media Wing Director of Rapid Action Battalion. [17]

In May 2024, Detective Branch, let by Harun-or-Rashid, arrested three members of Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya including its chief recruiter. [18] According to Harun 49 members of the group had been detained in total. [18]

It was founded in April 1998 in Palampur in Dhaka Division by Abdur Rahman and gained public prominence in 2001 when bombs and documents detailing the activities of the organisation were discovered in Parbatipur in Dinajpur district. The organisation was officially declared a terrorist organisation and banned by the government of Bangladesh in February 2005 after attacks on NGOs. But it struck back in mid-August when it detonated 500 small bombs at 300 locations throughout Bangladesh. The group re-organised and has committed several public murders in 2016 in northern Bangladesh as part of a wave of attacks on secularists.

He is the former additional director general (operations) at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) an elite multi-service unit of the Bangladesh Police, and oversaw crackdowns on Islamist militants. He has been sanctioned by the United States for his activities in RAB. He had previously commanded RAB-5, RAB-7, and RAB-11.

The Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), also known as the Bom Party, is a banned ethno-nationalist armed militant political organization in Bangladesh based in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Established by Nathan Bom in 2008, KNF aims to establish a separate autonomous or independent state for Bawm, Pangkhua, Lushai, Khumi, Mru & Khiang peoples with nine subdistricts (upazilas) of Rangamati and Bandarban districts. The Front has an armed wing called Kuki-Chin National Army. According to Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies, Kuki-Chin National Front has received weapons from Kachin State in Myanmar, and also has ties with Karen rebels.

2000 Chittagong massacre refers to the murder of eight people allegedly by the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir who had fired on a microbus carrying Bangladesh Chhatra League activists killing six in the microbus and one passerby.

On 26 November 2024, during a protest demanding the release of a Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, who had been arrested on sedition charges, Saiful Islam Alif, a lawyer at the Chittagong Court, was hacked with sharp weapons and killed by some individual in the violence. Reports indicate that the violence involved individuals identified as followers of Das and alleged supporters of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). However, ISKCON Bangladesh has denied any involvement in the incident.
