Awami Ittehad Party (abbr.JKAIP) is an Indian political party in Jammu and Kashmir union territory. [2] Founded in 2013 by Engineer Rashid, the party has been active in local politics, including the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election. [3] [4]

Contents

While the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party presents itself as an alternative to traditional political forces in the region, [5] [6] some political commentators have speculated that it may have ties to or be indirectly sponsored by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), possibly acting as a proxy. [5] [7] However, the party leadership has consistently denied these claims, asserting its independence and focus on regional issues. [8] [9]

History

Foundation

The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) was founded in 2013 by Sheikh Abdul Rashid, commonly referred to as Engineer Rashid, who had previously been an independent member of the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir representing the Langate constituency. [10] Rashid had gained prominence for his views on the Kashmir conflict and his advocacy for peaceful resolutions to the region's political disputes. AIP was established as an alternative to both the mainstream political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, such as the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP), as well as separatist factions. [11]

Ideology

AIP's core ideology revolves around the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as outlined in United Nations resolutions. The party calls for a plebiscite to allow the people of the region to decide their future, either with India or Pakistan or as an independent state. In addition, AIP advocates for demilitarization, the removal of laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), and an end to human rights abuses by security forces in the region.[ failed verification ] [12] AIP also focuses on improving socio-economic conditions for Kashmiris, addressing unemployment, and ensuring political rights for the people of the region.[ citation needed ]

Political activities

2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Election

The party contested the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections on multiple seats, with its founder, Engineer Rashid, retaining his seat in Langate. [13] Despite not winning additional seats, AIP emerged as a vocal force within the state legislature. [14] During the 2024 assembly elections, they reportedly advocated for the unconditional release of political prisoners and a ban on liquor sales as part of their manifesto. [15]

2024 Baramulla Lok Sabha election

In the 2024 Indian general elections, AIP's leader, Engineer Rashid, contested the Baramulla parliamentary seat from prison. Rashid had been in detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and was later arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 on charges related to terror funding. [16] Despite his ongoing legal troubles and his inability to actively campaign, Rashid achieved victory, securing the seat with high margin. [17] [18]

Role in the Gupkar Declaration

In October 2020, AIP became part of the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), [19] a coalition aimed at restoring the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, which had been revoked following the abrogation of Article 370. This alliance opposes the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories and seeks to restore its autonomy. [20]

In a political development, the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) led by Engineer Rashid has formed an alliance with former members of the Jamaat-e-Islami for the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election. [21] [22]

She was the first female chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. After the revocation of Article 370 of the constitution in August 2019, Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) is an alliance of 26 political, social and religious organizations formed on 9 March 1993, as a united political front to raise the cause of Kashmiri independence in the Kashmir conflict. Mehmood Ahmed Saghar was the first convener of the APHC-PAK chapter when the alliance was established in 1993. The alliance has historically been viewed positively by Pakistan as it contests the claim of the Indian government over the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The organisation is split into two main factions, those being the Mirwaiz and Geelani factions. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is the founder and chairman of Mirwaiz faction and Masarat Alam Bhat is the interim chairman of Geelani faction, who succeeded Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the founder of the faction after his death.

The party is a member of the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration electoral alliance. A District Development Council is a form of elected local government in Jammu and Kashmir facilitated by the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 and created under Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Rule, 1996 of the constitution of India. They are primarily aimed at electing the members from the rural and urban areas for the District Planning Committee and the councils themselves with fourteen members from each district for speedy development and economic upliftment.

Legislative Assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir from 18 September to 1 October 2024 in 3 phases to elect 90 members of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The results of the elections were announced on 8 October 2024. The INDIA alliance, consisting of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), won a majority of seats in the election, winning 49 of the 90 seats for which elections were held, with the JKNC winning the highest number of seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the largest share of the popular vote.

Khursheed Ahmad Shiekh is an Indian politician and former teacher, currently serving as a member of Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly. He is a member of Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party and is representing Langate assembly constituency since October 2024.
