Jayakarta is an Indonesian passenger train, with the premium economy operated by Kereta Api Indonesia which between Pasar Senen and Surabaya Gubeng via Purwokerto and Lempuyangan.
This train support for the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan train at the same route but difference stop station and train sets. The Jayakarta train as the longest train sets in Southern Java railway.
The name Jayakarta comes from the old name of Jakarta during the Banten Sultanate era. The Jayakarta train is a rebranding of the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan Premium train which has been operating as an additional train service during the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2017.
Initially, there was a train service serving the Jakarta–Surabaya route via the central Java line, the Jayabaya Selatan train, which was also a spin-off of the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan.
The Jayabaya Selatan was a rebranding of the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan Lebaran, which later changed to the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan. The GBMS Lebaran train began operating in the 1980s as a special holiday service, with Business class. In 1990, the GBMS Utama was operated regularly and changed its name to the Jayabaya train. This train then became the Jayabaya Selatan train after the launch of the North Jayabaya.
However, the operation of the Jayabaya Selatan was stopped in 2007 due to low passenger occupancy rates, since then the route has only been served by the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan. [1]
In 2016, PT KAI adding a train service on the route, called the KLB Ekonomi PSE–SGU, which operates on weekends and religious holidays. This service operates using a "new image" economy class train set manufactured by PT. INKA in 2016.
As of 15 June 2017, PT KAI launched the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan Premium train as an additional train during the 2017 Eid homecoming season. Due to its high passenger occupancy rate, the train was operated regularly and its name was changed to Jayakarta. The Jayakarta train began operating on 28 September 2017, coinciding with PT Kereta Api Indonesia's 72nd anniversary at Pasar Senen. [2]
In the early days of its operation, the Jayakarta train served stops at Surabaya Gubeng (terminus), Sepanjang, Mojokerto, Jombang, Kertosono, Nganjuk, Madiun, Paron, Walikukun (direction of Surabaya), Solo Balapan, Klaten, Yogyakarta, Kutoarjo, Kebumen (direction of Surabaya), Karanganyar (direction of Surabaya), Kroya, Purwokerto, Bumiayu, Prupuk, Cirebon, Jatibarang, Jatinegara (towards Jakarta), Pasar Senen, and Jakarta Kota (terminus).
To reduce congestion at Pasar Senen Station, PT KAI changed the travel mechanism of several trains which resulted in the extension of the Jayakarta train route to Jakarta Kota starting 29 May 2019. [3]
Around 1 December 2019 following the enactment of new train travel chart 2019, the operational of the Jayakarta train was transferred to Operation Area VIII Surabaya from Operation Area I Jakarta with the train set transferred to Sidotopo (SDT) from Jakarta Kota (JAKK) to fulfill the operational of the Songgoriti on the Surabaya-Malang route when the enactment of new train travel chart 2019. In 2020, the operational changes on the Jayakarta train were transferred back to Operation Area I Jakarta from Operation Area VIII Surabaya along with the train set transferred back to Jakarta Kota (JAKK) from Sidotopo (SDT), as part of the exchange of operational services with the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan.
As Jayakarta train occupancy increases, the departure point for Jayakarta trains has been returned to Pasar Senen Station, previously Jakarta Kota Station. Because the Jakarta Kota Train Depot (JAKK) received additional train sets from the Semarang Poncol (SMC) depot, these trains have been operating as long train sets alongside the Kertajaya and Gumarang train starting 10 February 2021, the enactment of new train travel chart 2021.
With the enactment of new train travel chart 2021, the Jayakarta Premium train, which originally stopped at Yogyakarta Station, has been moved to Lempuyangan Station to facilitate passenger service on long train sets.
