Jeffrey Hirst (born 22 December 1963) is a Canadian diver. He competed in the men's 10 metre platform event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He also competed at the 1982 and 1986 Commonwealth Games, as well as the 1983, 1985 and 1987 Summer Universiades. In 2002, Hirst was inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame.

Career

Hirst has dived for the University of Toronto. [1] In 1981, he won the under-17s one metre platform event at the Canadian Championships. He also came second in the three metre platform and tower events. [2] He came second in the 3 metre platform event at the 1982 Canadian Championships. As a result, he qualified for the 1982 Commonwealth Games. [3] In the same year, he came third in the 10 metre tower competition at an invitational event in Brno, Czechoslovakia. He was the only Canadian medallist at the meeting. [4] He finished eighth in the 10 metre platform event at the 1983 Summer Universiade. [5] He came second in the 10 metre tower event at the 1985 Canadian Championships, having led the event for a time. As a result, he qualified for the event at the 1985 Summer Universiade. [6]

In 1986, he won the 3 metre event at the Canadian Inter-University Athletic Union Swimming Championship, [7] and came fifth in the 10 metre platform event at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. [8] In 1987, he competed in the 10 metres event at the Pan American Games, and the 3 metres and 10 metres events at the Summer Universiade. [9] That year, he also came second in the tower events at the Canadian Championships. [10]

In 1988, Hirst won the 10 metre platform event at the Canadian Championships. [11] [12] He competed at the Championships despite having fractured his thumb five weeks beforehand, [12] and as a result of his victory, he was selected for the men's 10 metre platform event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. [11] He finished 20th overall at the Games. [13]

Post-career

After retiring, Hirst worked as a personal trainer, [14] [15] and set up a company Training Zone Fitness Consultants Inc. In 2002, Hirst was inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame. [15]

Personal life

Hirst's wife Anna Dacyshyn was also a diver, who was inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. [16]

Vincent Riendeau is a Canadian elite diver. He won a silver medal at the 2015 FINA World Championships in the 10 m mixed synchro event and a silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in the 10 m synchro event. He competed at several World Cups and Grand Prix events.

Anna Dacyshyn is a Canadian former diver, who won the 10 metre platform event at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, and won six national championships. In 2010, she was inaugurated into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame.

Linda Cuthbert is a Canadian former diver and present sports director of Commonwealth Sport Canada since 2006, having also served as a technical official for several commonwealth games. During her diving career, Cuthbert won a bronze medal in each of the 1975 and 1979 Pan American Games platform diving events, as well as a gold medal in the 1978 Commonwealth Games 10 metre highboard event. Cuthbert began diving at age 10 and started to take it seriously in 1967, when she had a series of different coaches until settling with Don Webb, who became her permanent coach.

Jennifer McArton is a former Canadian diver. During the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, she won a silver medal in the women's 10 metre highboard event.

Nikita Hains is an Australian diver who competes in the 10m individual events, as well as the 10m synchronised.
