Johannes Pietsch (born 29 April 2001), also known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer-songwriter. He is set to represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song "Wasted Love".

Biography

Pietsch was born in Vienna in a wealthy family to an Austrian IT specialist and a Filipino cook and grew up in Dubai. In 2016, the family returned to Austria. [1] In 2020, he took part in the ninth series of The Voice UK after missing the deadline for The Voice of Germany. [1] [2] The following year, he took part in the fifth season of Starmania, where he made it to the first final show. [3] He also attends the opera school of the Vienna State Opera. [4]

On 30 January 2025, "Wasted Love" performed by Pietsch, under the stage name JJ, was announced by ORF as the Austrian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 during the radio show Ö3-Wecker, aired on Ö3. "Wasted Love" was co-written by JJ and Austrian 2023 representative Teodora Špirić, and is due to be released in March 2025. [5] [6]

Musical style

Pietsch's musical style combines elements of opera and pop. As a "contralto" type of countertenor with a range reaching into the soprano register, he explores both genres through an intense and expressive vocal and interpretative approach. [7]

Personal life

In addition to his native German, Pietsch also speaks English, French and Tagalog. [4]

Austria has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 56 times since its debut in 1957. The country has won twice, in 1966 and 2014, and such it holds the record for the longest gap between consecutive wins — 48 years. The Austrian participant broadcaster in the contest is Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF). Vienna was the host city on both of the occasions that the contest was held in Austria, in 1967 and 2015.

Austria was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1999 with the song "Reflection", written by Dave Moskin, and performed by Bobbie Singer. In July 2010, the Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) announced that they would be returning to the Eurovision Song Contest after a three-year absence following their withdrawal in 2008. ORF organised the national final Düsseldorf - wir kommen! in order to select the Austrian entry for the 2011 contest in Düsseldorf, Germany. Thirty songs competed in an online voting round titled Guten Morgen Düsseldorf, of which ten were selected to proceed to the national final. The ten songs competed in a televised show where two rounds of public voting selected the winner. The first round selected the top three entries to proceed to the second round, during which "The Secret Is Love" performed by Nadine Beiler was selected as the winner after gaining 46.73% of the votes.

Austria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with the song "Woki mit deim Popo" written by Lukas Plöchl and Manuel Hoffelner. The song was performed by the duo Trackshittaz. The Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) organised the national final Österreich rockt den Song Contest in order to select the Austrian entry for the 2012 contest in Baku, Azerbaijan. Ten songs competed in a televised show where a public vote first selected the top two entries to proceed to a second round of voting. In the second round, "Woki mit deim Popo" was selected as the winner after gaining 51% of the votes from a public vote. This was the first time that the Austrian song was performed entirely in the Mühlviertlerisch dialect at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The song would then proceed to fail to qualify, only scoring 8 points, securing a last-place finish in 18th.

Austria was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 with the song "I Am Yours", written by Jimmy Harry, Dominic Muhrer, Paul Estrela, Florian Meindl, and Markus Christ, and performed by the band The Makemakes. It served as an alternative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, which was planned to be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2025 is set to be the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is scheduled to take place in Basel, Switzerland, following the country's victory at the 2024 contest with the song "The Code" by Nemo. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, the contest will be held at St. Jakobshalle, and will consist of two semi-finals on 13 and 15 May, and a final on 17 May 2025. The three live shows will be presented by Hazel Brugger and Sandra Studer, with Michelle Hunziker joining for the final.
