Denmark will be represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, which will be held in Basel, Switzerland. The Danish participating broadcaster, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), will organise the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2025 in order to select its entry for the contest.

Background

Prior to the 2025 contest, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest representing Denmark fifty-one times since its first entry in 1957. [1] It had won the contest, to this point, on three occasions: in 1963 with the song " Dansevise " performed by Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann, in 2000 with the song "Fly on the Wings of Love" performed by Olsen Brothers, and in 2013 with the song "Only Teardrops" performed by Emmelie de Forest. Since the introduction of semi-finals in 2004, it had failed to qualify to the final eight times, including in 2024, when the song "Sand" performed by Saba placed 12th in the second semi-final. [1]

As part of its duties as participating broadcaster, DR organises the selection of its entry in the Eurovision Song Contest and broadcasts the event in the country. The broadcaster had selected all of its Eurovision entries thus far through the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix . DR confirmed its intention to participate at the 2025 contest on 6 May 2024, announcing that Dansk Melodi Grand Prix would again be organised in order to select its entry for the contest. [2]

Before Eurovision

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix2025

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix2025 will be the 55th edition of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix (DMGP), the music competition that selects the Danish entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. The event will be held on 1 March 2025 at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, and will be hosted by Sara Bro  [ da ] and Stéphanie Surrugue  [ da ]. [3] [4]

Format

Eight acts will compete in one show where the winner will be determined over two rounds of voting. In the first round, open between 24 and 28 February 2025 and again during the live final of 1 March, the top three songs will qualify to a superfinal, where a second voting round determined the winner. [5] The results of both rounds will be based on the 50/50 combination of votes from the public and a jury panel of international juries alongside Danish professionals. [6] [7] Viewers will be able to vote each song once per round via a new version of the mobile application introduced in the 2023 edition or, during the live show, via SMS. Artists will be given the option of a live orchestra accompaniment for their live performances. [8]

Competing entries

On 16 September 2024, DR opened a submission period until 27 October 2024 for artists and composers to submit their entries. [9] [10] Songs could be submitted and performed in any language, however, in order to qualify to compete, at least one composer, lyricist, or performer had to be a Danish citizen or exhibit a strong connection to Denmark, and residents from the Faroe Islands and Greenland may also participate. All composers and songwriters may submit multiple entries to the contest. DR also invited contributions from the Danish music industry. Denmark was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 with the song "Tell Me Who You Are", written by Michael Ronson, and performed by Malene Mortensen. The Danish participating broadcaster, Danmarks Radio (DR), organised the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2002 in order to select its entry for the contest. Ten songs competed in a televised show where "Vis mig hvem du er" performed by Malene Mortensen was the winner as decided upon through two rounds of jury voting and public voting. The song was later translated from Danish to English for Eurovision and was titled "Tell Me Who You Are".

Denmark was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2001 with the song "Never Ever Let You Go", written by Søren Poppe, Stefan Nielsen, and Thomas Brekling, and performed by the duo Rollo and King. The Danish participating broadcaster, Danmarks Radio (DR), organised the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2001 in order to select its entry for the contest. In addition, DR was also the host broadcaster and staged the event at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, after winning the previous edition with the song "Fly on the Wings of Love" by the Olsen Brothers.

Denmark participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with the song "New Tomorrow" written by Lise Cabble and Jakob Glæsner. The song was performed by the band A Friend in London. The Danish broadcaster DR organised the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2011 in order to select the Danish entry for the 2011 contest in Düsseldorf, Germany. Ten songs competed in a televised show where the winner was selected over three rounds of voting. The results of the first round were decided upon through the combination of jury voting and public voting while the results in the second and third round were determined solely by public televoting. "New Tomorrow" performed by A Friend in London was the winner after gaining the most public votes in the third round.

Denmark participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with the song "Should've Known Better" written by Chief 1, Remee and Isam B. The song was performed by Soluna Samay.
