After the Socialist Party of America (SPA) transformed into Social Democrats USA,Michael Harrington formed the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (DSOC). The DSOC later merged with the New American Movement to form the DSA. The organization is headquartered in New York City and has about 80,000 members. It leads organizing and protest campaigns,and has members in the House of Representatives,state legislatures,and numerous other local offices.
Democratic centralism is the organisational principle of socialist states and of most communist parties. In practice,democratic centralism means that political decisions reached by voting processes are binding upon all members of the political party. The nomination of Robert M. La Follette for president took place at a convention held in Cleveland,Ohio from July 4-5,1924. The convention was called by the Conference for Progressive Political Action (CPPA) and included accredited delegates from national trade unions,state branches of the CPPA,and other political organizations. Members of the Socialist Party of America played a prominent role in the organization of the July convention and the subsequent La Follette presidential campaign;representatives of the Communist Workers Party of America were banned.
