John Hatzistergos AM (born 20 August 1960) is an Australian jurist and former politician who has served as a judge of the District Court of New South Wales since 16 October 2014 and Chief Commissioner of the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) since 7 August 2022. [1] He was previously a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council representing the Labor Party between 1999 and 2011,and a minister in various Labor governments.
Born in Redfern,Sydney,the son of two Greek immigrants,Hatzistergos was educated at Bourke Street Primary School in Surry Hills and Cleveland Street Boys' High School. [2]
Hatzistergos studied economics and law at the University of Sydney,where he was later appointed to the Senate of the University. [2]
Hatzistergos was a solicitor in private practice between 1983 and 1987. He spent the next two years as a Senior Legal Officer with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and a barrister in private practice since 1989. [3]
Hatzistergos joined the East Redfern branch of the ALP in 1976,was secretary of the Campsie branch from 1983 to 1990 and later the Belmore branch from 1993 to 2000. First elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1999 while serving as Deputy Mayor of Canterbury City Council. [3] [4] Hatzistergos served as the NSW Minister for Health,between 2005 and 2007 and again briefly for 14 days in 2009, [3] Minister for Fair Trading (2005) and Minister for Justice,between 2003 and 2005 and again between 2007 and 2009. Hatzistergos served as Attorney General [5] from 2007 until 2011,and Minister for Industrial Relations between 2008 and 2009. He was Minister for Citizenship,Minister for Regulatory Reform,Vice President of the Executive Council and Government Leader in the Legislative Council. [3]
He implemented major reforms to freedom of information and privacy through new legislation and the establishment of the Information and Privacy Commission. Other achievements include the establishment of the Australian International Disputes Centre in Sydney and Uniform Domestic Arbitration Laws,Intensive Correction Orders and Forum Sentencing. He also implemented major reforms to the NSW Children's Court following the Wood Special Commission of Inquiry. [6]
During his tenure,Hatzistergos was a nationally recognised opponent of a Bill of Rights. [7] In late 2010 it was reported that he was being considered a possible candidate for appointment to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, [8] and a potential successor to Chief Justice Reg Blanch of the District Court of New South Wales. [9]
On 31 March 2011,Hatzistergos announced that he intended to retire from the Legislative Council despite having four years of his term to run. [10] His announcement followed that of Eddie Obeid with Walt Secord and Adam Searle nominated by Labor to fill the casual vacancies. [11] [12]
In late 2011 Hatzistergos became an adjunct professor at the University of Technology Sydney,teaching constitutional law. [13] In July 2014 Hatzistergos was asked by the NSW Government to assist in the review the NSW Bail laws in response to controversy over a number of decisions made by magistrates. Hatzistergos recommended a number of changes to recalibrate the manner in which NSW courts would assess the risk posed by people charged with serious offenses. His recommendations were accepted by the NSW Government. [14] On 10 October 2014 NSW Attorney General Brad Hazzard announced Hatzistergos's appointment as a judge of the District Court of New South Wales. [6] He was appointed Chief Commissioner of the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in 7 August 2022. [1]
Nicholas Frank Hugo Greiner is an Australian politician who served as the 37th Premier of New South Wales from 1988 to 1992. Greiner was Leader of the New South Wales Division of the Liberal Party from 1983 to 1992 and Leader of the Opposition from 1983 to 1988. Greiner had served as the Federal President of the Liberal Party of Australia from 2017 to 2020. He served as the Consul-General in the United States of America,New York from 2021 to 2023.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is an integrity agency of the Government of New South Wales responsible for eliminating and investigating corrupt activities and enhancing the integrity of the state's public administration. The commission was established in 1989,pursuant to the Independent Commission Against Corruption Act,1988 (NSW),modeled after the ICAC in Hong Kong.
Morris Iemma is a former Australian politician who was the 40th Premier of New South Wales. He served from 3 August 2005 to 5 September 2008. From Sydney,Iemma attended the University of Sydney and the University of Technology,Sydney. A member of the Labor Party,he was first elected to the Parliament of New South Wales at the 1991 state election,having previously worked as a trade union official. From 1999,Iemma was a minister in the third and fourth ministries led by Bob Carr. He replaced Carr as premier and Leader of the New South Wales Labor Party in 2005,following Carr's resignation. Iemma led Labor to victory at the 2007 state election,albeit with a slightly reduced majority. He resigned as premier in 2008,after losing the support of caucus,and left parliament shortly after,triggering a by-election. He was replaced as premier by Nathan Rees.
Ian Michael Macdonald is a former Australian politician and currently undergoing court proceedings and was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1988 to 2010 representing the Labor Party. Between 2003 and 2010,Macdonald held a range of ministerial responsibilities in the Carr,Iemma,Rees,and Keneally ministries. Macdonald,who joined the Labor Party in 1972,had his membership of the party terminated in 2013 for bringing the party into disrepute.
Eric Michael Roozendaal,a former Australian politician,was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council,serving between 2004 and 2013. He is a former General Secretary of the Labor Party. Roozendaal was the Treasurer of New South Wales,Minister of State and Regional Development,Minister of Ports and Waterways,Minister for the Illawarra,and Special Minister of State in the Rees and Keneally governments.
Andrew Arnold Tink AM is a former Australian politician,having served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the Liberal Party from 1988 to 2007. He was in the shadow cabinet from 1995 until March 2006. He has written two political biographies,a third book on the events and political consequences of a fatal plane crash,a fourth on Australian history,culture and society in the 20th century and a fifth on the involvement of Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station in the first Moon landing. Since leaving politics,Tink has been appointed a visiting fellow and adjunct professor at Macquarie University,as a trustee of the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales and president of the Library Council of New South Wales. He is an honorary Doctor of Letters honoris causa from Macquarie University.

Edward Moses Obeid is a retired Australian politician and convicted criminal,who served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1991 and 2011,representing the Labor Party. He was the Minister for Fisheries and the Minister for Mineral Resources from 1999–2003. Prior to the March 2015 expiry of his term in the Legislative Council,Obeid announced his decision to retire early on 10 May 2011,citing family reasons.

The Iemma ministry (2007–08) or Second Iemma ministry is the 90th ministry of the Government of New South Wales,and was led by the 40th Premier Morris Iemma. It was the second and subsequent of two occasions when Iemma was Premier.
The Bail Act 2013 is a New South Wales law that came into effect on 20 May 2014. It replaces the Bail Act 1978,which was considered "groundbreaking" when enacted,but has been reformed several times to presume against bail. The new act was created with the aims that it would be easier to understand,would further protect the community and would promote consistent decision-making. The Bail Act 2013 uses an "unacceptable risk" test in regard to whether "the accused will fail to appear in any proceedings for the offence,commit a serious offence,endanger the safety of victims,individuals or the community,or interfere with witnesses or evidence".
