John Pirie was a schooner, and the smallest of the ships in the First Fleet of South Australia that carried colonists and supplies to the Colony of South Australia in 1836. It was the first ship to set sail for the South Australian Company, only three days after the Letters Patent establishing the Province of South Australia were signed. [3] It was built by Alexander Hall and Company at Aberdeen, Scotland in 1827. [1]
The ship was named after John Pirie, a London merchant who initially owned half of the shares in the ship, and later took full ownership. It initially traded between Britain and Italy, Spain and Nova Scotia.
Pirie was a founding member of the South Australian Company, and sold the John Pirie to the company before it sailed to South Australia. For the journey, it was loaded with stores, farm animals, and 21 passengers. The skipper was George Martin, with two mates and five other crew. [2] It sailed from London on 22 February 1836, and arrived at Nepean Bay on 16 August. Another of Pirie's ships, the Emma, was chartered by the company to also make the voyage to South Australia. [1] Martin then sailed John Pirie to Hobart Town in Van Diemen's Land to collect more supplies. [4]
John Pirie, along with the other South Australian Company ships, remained in Australia following delivery of its passengers. It transported goods and passengers between various settlements in South Australia, as well as settlements at Launceston, Hobart Town and Sydney. It was blown ashore in a storm in December 1837 while anchored near the whaling station at Rosetta Harbour (west of Victor Harbor) in Encounter Bay, but was refloated. [5]
John Pirie was pushed on shore in another storm on 23 September 1841 at Aldinga Bay after breaking both anchor lines. [6] It was refloated and sailed back to Port Adelaide for repairs several weeks later. [7] At the same time, Sydney newspapers carried advertisements that the John Pirie would be for sale in excellent order when it reached Sydney. [8] [9] It remained under repair until the end of January 1842, at which time it sailed to New Zealand with 16 passengers and cargo. [10]
It departed Hobart Town for Port Albert, Victoria on 25 August 1848 where it loaded cattle to return to Hobart. It was overdue reaching Hobart Town at the end of 1848. [11] Wreckage was discovered on 3 October 1850 on the southwestern side of Prime Seal Island in the Furneaux Group in Bass Strait. [12] [13]
Duke of Roxburgh was launched in 1828 at Newcastle upon Tyne. Initially she traded with India, but later she often sailed between Great Britain and her Australasian colonies carrying emigrants. She was wrecked in 1864.
SS City of Launceston was a 368 GRT steamship operated by the Launceston and Melbourne Steam Navigation Company from 1863, which had an early role in colonial steam shipping as the forerunner of the modern Bass Strait ferry service between Tasmania and Victoria. It was sunk in Port Phillip Bay after a collision with another ship on 19 November 1865.
Duke of York was a three-masted brig launched in 1817 at Bideford as a Falmouth packet, sailing between Falmouth, Cornwall, and Jamaica. In 1836 she brought settlers to South Australia for the South Australia Company. She was wrecked in 1837.
Lady Mary Pelham was a brig launched in 1816 that initially worked as a Falmouth packet. After her modification to a barque she became part of the South Australia Company's fleet of 1836. She later served as a whaler and transport between Van Diemen's Land and Portland, Victoria. She was wrecked in 1849.
John Barry was a three-masted merchant ship, convict transport, and immigrant transport built in 1814 at Whitby, England by John Barry for his own interests. A typhoon damaged her in 1841 and at last report she was an opium hulk at Hong Kong.
Pestonjee Bomanjee was a wooden sailing ship built in 1834 by James Lang of Dumbarton, Scotland. She was a three-masted wooden barque of 595 tons, 130 feet in length, 31.5 feet in breadth, first owned by John Miller Jnr and Company, Glasgow. Her last-known registered owner in 1861 was Patrick Keith & George Ross, Calcutta, India.
In 1836, at least nine ships carried the first European settlers from England to the south coast of Australia for the establishment of the City of Adelaide and the province of South Australia. Although not all of the ships sailed together, they have been referred to as the "First Fleet of South Australia" since all were carrying the first immigrants, including the founding planners and administrators of the new settlement, all of whom were represented at the proclamation of the new province.
Georgiana was a merchant ship built in Quebec, Canada in 1826. She made three voyages transporting convicts from England to Australia. Georgiana was last listed in 1841.
Gilmore, was a merchant ship built at Sulkea, opposite Calcutta, British India, in 1824. In 1829-30 she made a voyage delivering settlers to the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. She then made two voyages transporting convicts from England to Tasmania. She was wrecked in 1866.
Integrity was a 220-ton merchant ship built at Redbridge, Southampton, England in 1824. She made two voyages transporting convicts from Mauritius to Australia. She was wrecked in the Torres Strait in August 1841.
Nimrod was launched late in 1821 at Calcutta. One report has her being sold in 1825; she did change her homeport to the United Kingdom. In 1832 her ownership and homeport changed to Sydney, Australia.
The New Zealand Company was a 19th-century English company that played a key role in the colonisation of New Zealand. The company was formed to carry out the principles of systematic colonisation devised by Edward Gibbon Wakefield, who envisaged the creation of a new-model English society in the southern hemisphere. Under Wakefield's model, the colony would attract capitalists who would then have a ready supply of labour—migrant labourers who could not initially afford to be property owners, but who would have the expectation of one day buying land with their savings.
James Pattison was a merchant sailing ship built in 1828 upon the River Thames, England. She made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC), and two transporting convicts to New South Wales. She also made several voyages carrying immigrants. She burnt to the waterline after her cargo ignited en route from Sydney to England in 1840.
Charles Eaton was a barque, launched in 1833 for use as a merchant ship. Whilst under the command of Captain Fowle, she was wrecked in 1834 among the Torres Strait Islands, off the northern coast of Queensland, Australia, and her passengers and crew attacked and nearly all killed by Torres Strait Islanders on Mer Island. A cabin boy and small child survived and lived with the islanders until being rescued by Captain Lewis and crew on Isabella in June 1836, who also found skulls of some of the murdered people on a nearby island and took them back to Sydney for burial.
Bombay was launched in 1801 at Daman/Demaun. Her early career is obscure. From 1821 on she assumed Calcutta registry. Between 1832 and 1840 she made three voyages from London as a whaler. In 1842 she carried settlers for the New Zealand Company. She was last listed in 1853.
Africaine was a barque launched in 1831 at Jarrow on the River Tyne in England. In 1836 she carried immigrants as part of the First Fleet of South Australia. She was wrecked on 23 September 1843.
Minna Pauline Fischer was an Australian lyric soprano and singing teacher in London.
RMS Orama was a British steam ocean liner and Royal Mail Ship. She was launched in 1911 for the Orient Steam Navigation Company. When new, she was the largest liner sailing between Great Britain and Australia.
William Henry Breton was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy who wrote the memoirs Excursions in New South Wales, Western Australia and Van Dieman's Land, during the years 1830, 1831,1832 and 1833, first published in 1833 and Scandinavian Sketches, or, A Tour in Norway, published in 1835. The books resulted from private visits to Australia, or New Holland as it was then known, in 1829-30 and 1832-33 and to Norway, Sweden and Russia in 1834.
