John Stockwell Samuels IV [1] (born March 25, 1961) [2] is an American actor and filmmaker. For his work on the television film Cheaters (2000), Stockwell was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special. [3]

Early life

Stockwell was born in Galveston, Texas, the son of Ellen Richards and John S. Samuels III, an attorney. [4] [5] Stockwell's sister is historian Evelyn Welch, and his niece is singer and songwriter Florence Welch. [6] He attended Harvard University, and simultaneously began commuting to New York City to appear on episodes of the soap opera Guiding Light . [7]

Career

Stockwell began his career as an international model. During his time as a model, he became a friend of Andy Warhol. [8] His first feature film as an actor came with a small role in 1981's So Fine . His well-known roles came in the 1983 comedy film Losin' It as Spider; later that year, in the John Carpenter horror film Christine, as Dennis Guilder; and the 1985 comedy film My Science Project as Michael Harlan. [9] Also in 1985 he appeared in the poorly received City Limits ; though unsuccessful at the box office, it was later riffed in an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 . He also appeared in the highly acclaimed 1985 TV mini-series North and South . In 1986, he appeared in Top Gun as Cougar. He made guest appearances on TV shows including The Young Riders and Friday the 13th: The Series .

Stockwell directed several films, including Cheaters (2000), Crazy/Beautiful (2001), Blue Crush (2002), Into the Blue (2005), Turistas (2006), Heart (2009), [10] the Gina Carano star-vehicle In the Blood, and the 2016 Kickboxer reboot Kickboxer: Vengeance . [11]

Stockwell also wrote the screenplay for the 2001 film Rock Star .

Personal life

Stockwell is married to Helene Henderson, a chef and caterer. [12] They have three children. [13] His mother, Zsuzsana Nagy is Hungarian and his father from Irish ancestry.[ citation needed ]

Robert Dean Stockwell was an American actor with a career spanning seven decades. As a child actor under contract to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, he first came to the public's attention in films including Anchors Aweigh (1945), Song of the Thin Man (1947), The Green Years (1946), Gentleman's Agreement (1947), The Boy with Green Hair (1948), and Kim (1950). Blue Movie is a 1969 American erotic film written, produced and directed by Andy Warhol. It is the first adult erotic film depicting explicit sex to receive wide theatrical release in the United States, and is regarded as a seminal film in the Golden Age of Porn (1969-1984), which, before the legalization of pornography in Denmark on July 1, 1969, started on June 12, 1969 with the release of Blue Movie at the Elgin Theater, and later, the New Andy Warhol Garrick Theatre, in New York City. Blue Movie helped inaugurate the "porno chic" phenomenon, in which porn was publicly discussed by celebrities and taken seriously by film critics, in modern American culture, and shortly thereafter, in many other countries throughout the world. Nelson Lyon was an American writer, actor, photographer and film director, known for his directorial debut The Telephone Book (1971). He started working in advertising and later as a writer for Saturday Night Live during the early 1980s. He attended Columbia University. In the 1960s he was an active member of the counterculture movement and was friendly with several key figures, like Andy Warhol and William Burroughs.
