The Virginia General Assembly is the legislative body of the Commonwealth of Virginia,the oldest continuous law-making body in the Western Hemisphere,the first elected legislative assembly in the New World and was established on July 30,1619.
The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two houses of the Virginia General Assembly,the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years;unlike most states,these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The House is presided over by the Speaker of the House,who is elected from among the House membership by the Delegates. The Speaker is usually a member of the majority party and,as Speaker,becomes the most powerful member of the House. The House shares legislative power with the Senate,the upper house of the General Assembly. The House of Delegates is the modern-day successor to the colonial House of Burgesses,which first met at Jamestown in 1619. The House is divided into Democratic and Republican caucuses. In addition to the Speaker,there is a majority leader,majority whip,majority caucus chair,minority leader,minority whip,minority caucus chair,and the chairs of the several committees of the House.

John Marshall Coleman is an American lawyer and Republican politician who served in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly during the 1970s. He was the first Republican elected as Attorney General of Virginia since Reconstruction and served 1978–1982,although his later campaigns for Governor of Virginia and U.S. Senate proved unsuccessful.
Robert Creigh Deeds is an American lawyer and politician serving as a member of the Senate of Virginia representing the 25th district since 2001. Previously,he was the Democratic nominee for Attorney General of Virginia in 2005 and Governor of Virginia in 2009. He was defeated in both of those races by Republican Bob McDonnell. Deeds lost by just 323 votes in 2005,but was defeated by a wide margin of over 17 percentage points in 2009. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1992 to 2001.

The politics of Virginia have followed major historical events and demographic changes in the commonwealth. In the 21st century,the northern region has become more liberal in attitudes and voting,constituting a reliable voting bloc for Democrats and joining with population centers in the Richmond Metropolitan and Hampton Roads areas to dominate the state. Political orientation varies by region,with the larger cities and suburban areas generally voting Democratic and the rural areas voting Republican. The southern,rural regions have remained rural and conservative. Until 2021 when the GOP swept all statewide offices,Virginia was shifting more Democratic and now is considered a swing state again by most pundits.
Richard Lawrence Saslaw is an American politician who served as Majority Leader of the Senate of Virginia between 2020 –2024,when he declined to run for reelection. A member of the Democratic Party,he served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1976–80,then was elected to the Senate of Virginia. He represented the 35th district,made up of the city of Falls Church and portions of Fairfax County and the city of Alexandria.

The primaries were held on June 14.

He unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2018,losing in the primary election to Corey Stewart. He was the Republican nominee in the 2020 election to represent Virginia's 7th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives,which he narrowly lost to Abigail Spanberger,the incumbent Democratic congresswoman. The 2022 United States House of Representatives elections in Virginia were held on November 8,2022,to elect the 11 U.S. representatives from the state of Virginia,one from each of the state's 11 congressional districts. The elections coincide with other elections to the House of Representatives. Pursuant to state law,primaries organized through the Department of Elections were held on June 21,2022. However,some Republican firehouse primaries were held on dates as late as May 21,2022.
The 2023 Virginia Senate election was held on Tuesday,November 7,2023,concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates,to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.
