Jones Brothers was a British coachbuilding company that primarily manufactured taxi bodies, but also produced bodies for luxury vehicles.

Jones began operations in 1928. The company was initially based in the London district of Bayswater. Jones began producing bodies for taxis early on. Chassis and engines initially came from the Austin 12 hp ("Heavy 12"), then from 1934 from the Austin 12/4. Mann & Overton took over distribution for the London area. In the mid-1930s, bodies for private vehicles were also added, such as a one-off aerodynamic two-door car built on the chassis of the Lanchester Ten or a small series of convertibles with Austin 12 mechanics, which were marketed as Sandringham. [1]

After the Second World War, Jones was taken over by FH Boyd-Carpenter, who had operated his own coachbuilding business under the name Boyd-Carpenter until the outbreak of the war and now ran the Rumbold Company, a supplier to the aircraft industry. Boyd-Carpenter merged Jones' headquarters with that of the Rumbold Company in the London district of Willesden. [2]

In the 1950s, Jones built Humber-based ambulances and pick-ups; some convertible versions of the Humber Super Snipe were also built at Jones. Jones may have acted as a subcontractor for Thrupp & Maberly, the preferred body supplier of the Rootes Group. Older vehicles were given new bodies on a one-off basis. One of these was a Bentley 3.5 Litre, which was given a "Woodie"-style station wagon body. The last order came from Bristol Cars and was for the manufacture of the bodies for the Bristol 406, introduced in 1958. Jones built around 150 406 bodies. [3]

According to one source, Jones did not fully complete the Bristol contract; before it was completed, the company became insolvent and ceased operations. [4] Bristol passed the wooden molds used by Jones on to Park Royal Vehicles in 1961, [5] where – starting with the 407 – the bodies for the stylistically only slightly modified successors to the 406 were manufactured until 1976. [6]

Another source reports that in 1962 Jones fitted a Jaguar Mark 2 with a station wagon body on behalf of racing driver Mike Hawthorn. [7]

Carbodies was a taxi design and manufacturing company based in Coventry, England. In its latter years it also traded as London Taxis International and The London Taxi Company.

Park Ward was a British coachbuilder founded in 1919 which operated from Willesden in North London. In the 1930s, backed by Rolls-Royce Limited, it made technical advances which enabled the building of all-steel bodies to Rolls-Royce's high standards. Bought by Rolls-Royce in 1939, it merged with H. J. Mulliner & Co. in 1961 to form Mulliner Park Ward.

Thrupp & Maberly was a British coachbuilding business based in the West End of London, England. Coach-makers to Queen Victoria they operated for more than two centuries until 1967 when they closed while in the ownership of Rootes Group.

Abbott of Farnham, E D Abbott Limited was a British coachbuilding business based in Farnham, Surrey, trading under that name from 1929. A major part of their output was under sub-contract to motor vehicle manufacturers. The business closed in 1972.

Carrozzeria Boneschi S.r.L. is an Italian coachbuilder, mainly of commercial vehicles. Until 1960, the company was mostly involved with automobile manufacturers such as Talbot, Rolls-Royce, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Fiat. It was established in Milan by Giovanni Boneschi, moving to Cambiago in (1933). The factory was rebuilt after World War II (1946), after which Boneschi died. Among its designers and directors in the later years was Dr. Bruno Pezzaglia. Boneschi brand has recently been acquired by the coachbuilder Savio.

Saoutchik was a French coachbuilding company founded in 1906 and based in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris. The company was one of the best-known coachbuilders in France in the 1920s and 1930s and, together with Figoni et Falaschi and Franay, is considered one of the most important representatives of the "Baroque" style in French coachwork in the 1930s and 1940s.

The Bristol 406 Zagato is a British-Italian sports car that combines the technology of the Bristol 406 Saloon with a body designed and built by Zagato. This special model, often considered eccentric, was commissioned by Bristol dealer Tony Crook and was produced in very limited quantities. It is known for being lighter, smaller, and faster than the factory-bodied base car. In addition, some older Bristol chassis also subsequently received similar Zagato bodies. Today, the 406 Zagato is considered one of the most expensive classics within the brand’s lineup.

Bligh Bros. or Bligh Brothers of Canterbury was a British coachbuilder initially producing carriage and, in the 20th century, bodies for automobiles. Amongst the most famous creations by Bligh Brothers are the unique race cars known as Chitty Bang Bang, which inspired the book Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang by author Ian Fleming and the later film adaptation, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
