Jonti Danilewitz (born 1986/1987), known mononymously as Jonti, is a South African-Australian electronic and alternative hip hop record producer, composer and songwriter. [1] [2] He is signed to Stones Throw Records and Future Classic. [3] He was also a touring member of the Avalanches.

Biography

Danilewitz was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. [4] His family relocated to Sydney, [4] where he attended Masada College, Sydney in 1999. [5] By 2009, he fronted the Sydney-based group Danimals, which were working at Mark Ronson's The Lab to write and record material. [6] Danilewitz' older brother Leron was their talent manager. [6] One of the tracks, "Fox", was used for a national advertising campaign. [7] Danimals line-up in mid-2010 included James Domeyko, Moses MacRae and Julian Sudek on drums and Jaie Gonzalez on bass guitar. [8] Due to the United States yoghurt of the same name they changed to Djanimals. [9]

As Jonti Danimal, on keyboards, he was also a member of Sherlock's Daughter, an indie, electronic six-piece alongside Liam Flanagan on bass guitar, Tanya Horo on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Timothy Maybury on guitar, Graeme Pillemer and William Russell on drums. [10] [11] That group formed in 2007 by Horo, Maybury and Pillemer with Jonti joining later. [10] They recorded their debut album, Hunter, during 2010 with sessions at Watermusic Studios, Hoboken. [10] It was issued in 2012 via Gaga Digi. [10]

Danilewitz was performing as Jonti by November 2012. [9] His debut album, Twirligig, had appeared a year earlier in October 2011. [12] AllMusic's David Jeffries rated it four-out-of-five stars, who explained "this genre-borrowing hangs together effortlessly with Jonti's unique voice as its anchor, so let your laptop-hovering friends worry about the complex constructions while you enjoy Twirligig's simple pleasures". [12]

In 2014, Jonti performed a cover of the Avalanches debut album, Since I Left You, at Vivid LIVE and the Melbourne International Arts Festival. [13] [14] [15] In 2016, he appeared on their album Wildflowers later becoming their touring guitarist.

His second album, Tokorats , was released in 2017. [16] [17] [18] Jeffries' colleague David Simpson gave it three-and-a-half because "not all of his juxtapositions or segues seem to make sense, and the album seems a bit overstuffed, but Jonti's ambition and creativity are undeniably admirable, and the entire album is a delightfully strange trip". [16]

Evermore were a rock band formed in Feilding, New Zealand in 1999, made up of three brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume. The band was based in Sydney from 2004 to 2007 and then Melbourne until they became inactive in 2014. Evermore released four studio albums: Dreams (2004), Real Life (2006), Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show (2009), and Follow the Sun (2012), as well as a self-titled compilation album (2010). Def FX was an Australian band created by Sean Lowry (keyboards) in 1990 and included Fiona Horne on lead vocals, Blake Gardiner on guitar and Martyn Basha on bass - the band had no drummer. They released four albums, Light Speed Collision, Baptism, Ritual Eternal, Majick before disbanding in April 1997. For United States releases and touring they used Definition FX as their band name to avoid confusion with similarly named groups.

Barnestorming or Barnestorming Live is the first live album by Australian hard rocker, Jimmy Barnes, the former lead vocalist for Cold Chisel. It was released in November 1988 and went to number one on the Australian albums chart for three weeks later that month. Barnes and his backing band were recorded at their Melbourne performances from December 1987 to February 1988.

<i>Wildflower</i> (The Avalanches album) 2016 studio album by the Avalanches

Wildflower is the second studio album by Australian electronic music group the Avalanches. It was first released on 1 July 2016 on Apple Music and widely on 8 July 2016 by Modular Recordings in Australia, by XL Recordings in the United Kingdom, and by Astralwerks in the United States. It was the first album released by the band in 16 years, following their 2000 debut Since I Left You. It features multiple guest collaborators providing vocals and live instrumentation across its twenty-one tracks, including Danny Brown, MF DOOM, David Berman, Toro y Moi, Warren Ellis, Jonathan Donahue, Kevin Parker, Biz Markie, and Father John Misty, amongst others. Much like its predecessor, the album features extensive sampling, especially from 1960s psychedelic music, and relates to the era through themes of counterculture and anti-establishment. Member Robbie Chater described the album's structure as a road trip from a hyperrealistic urban environment to somewhere remote and far away while on LSD.

Jonathan Peter Zwartz is a New Zealand-born Australian jazz musician. In the 2018 ARIA Music Awards, he won the Best Jazz Album category for his third album, Animarum, released in 2018.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lime Cordiale</span> Australian pop rock duo

Lime Cordiale are an Australian pop rock group formed in 2009. It consists of brothers Oli and Louis Leimbach, with additional members James Jennings, Felix Bornholt and Nicholas Polovineo. They released their debut studio album Permanent Vacation in 2017. The group have performed at Groovin' the Moo and South by Southwest (SXSW). At the 2020 ARIA Music Awards they were nominated in eight categories and won Breakthrough Artist – Release for their second album, 14 Steps to a Better You.

Kofi Owusu-Ansah, known by his stage name Genesis Owusu, is a Ghanaian-Australian singer from Canberra. He is the younger brother of fellow hip hop rapper, Kojo Owusu-Ansah p.k.a. Citizen Kay. Owusu's debut studio album, Smiling with No Teeth, reached the ARIA Albums Chart top 30. At the 2021 ARIA Music Awards he won four trophies for Album of the Year, Best Hip Hop Release, Best Independent Release and Best Cover Art.

Mink were an American pop rock band formed in early 2006. They were led by American-born Neal Carlson on lead vocals with four Australian musicians Grant Fitzpatrick on bass guitar, David Lowy on rhythm guitar, Nick Maybury on lead guitar and Stella Mozgawa on drums. They issued their self-titled debut album in August 2007. They toured both Australia and America. In 2008 Lowy had left and the group disbanded in 2009.
