Joppa is an unincorporated community located in Burnet County, Texas, United States. [1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 34 in 2000.
The community got its start when in 1881, J. S. and Jane Danford of Delaware County, Iowa, donated two acres of land on the north bank of the river for a church. The original settlement name was Pool Branch for a nearby pool of water carved out by a waterfall on the North Fork of the San Gabriel River. By the 1880s, a cotton gin and mill were established, and a store and blacksmith shop soon followed, the only other businesses in the settlement. When a post office was established in 1891, residents submitted the biblical name “Joppa” and the postal service approved it. On May 19, 1904, the first telephone was installed in Joppa, and in 1907, an iron bridge was built across the river. The bridge still stands today (2011), though a new concrete bridge has replaced it for automobile traffic. In 1939, the Pedernales Electric Cooperative strung the first transmission line to bring electricity to the area. As late as the 1930s, the community held annual picnics as well as Friday and Saturday night socials and Sunday night singing. All that remains of the pioneer settlement is the church and community center. Its population was 34 in 2000. [2]
Joppa is located on the North Fork of the San Gabriel River on Farm to Market Road 210, seven miles northeast of Bertram. [2]
A school was built on top of the Danford's land grant. The building was constructed at once. The original school building was converted to a community center after the one-room school consolidated, in 1942, with the Bertram Independent School District and is still in use today. Until 1913, the schoolhouse hosted church services. [2] Today, the community is served by the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District.
Burnet County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 49,130. Its county seat is Burnet. The county was founded in 1852 and later organized in 1854. It is named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first (provisional) president of the Republic of Texas. The name of the county is pronounced with the emphasis or accent on the first syllable, just as is the case with its namesake.

The San Gabriel River is a river that flows through central Texas, USA. The San Gabriel River is formed in Georgetown by the confluence of the North Fork San Gabriel and the South Fork San Gabriel, both of which originate in Burnet County. There are two major impoundments of the river: Lake Georgetown along the North Fork, and Granger Lake, about 25 miles (40 km) below the confluence. Both are U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundments. The San Gabriel River joins the Little River five miles south of Cameron which then meets the Brazos River northwest of College Station. There is a city park in Georgetown at the confluence of the North and South Forks, with a well-known local swimming spot located just upriver from the confluence on the South Fork.
The Little River is a river in Central Texas in the Brazos River watershed. It is formed by the confluence of the Leon River and the Lampasas River near Little River, Texas in Bell County. It flows generally southeast for 75 miles (121 km) until it empties into the Brazos River about 5 miles (8.0 km) southwest of Hearne, at a site called Port Sullivan in Milam County. The Little River has a third tributary, the San Gabriel River, which joins the Little about 8 miles (13 km) north of Rockdale and five miles southwest of Cameron. Cameron, the county seat of Milam County and the only city of any significant size on the Little River, was established in 1846.
Ranch to Market Road 243 is a Ranch to Market Road in the U.S. state of Texas maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The road, first designated in 1945, is located in Burnet and Williamson counties in the Texas Hill Country and passes through the city of Bertram and the smaller communities of Oatmeal and Mahomet. The nearly 21-mile (34 km) road has major intersections with RM 1174 and US 183 at its termini and has short concurrencies with SH 29 and again with RM 1174 in Bertram. RM 243 passes through a portion of a national wildlife refuge and crosses two forks of the San Gabriel River.
