Abstracting and indexing

JoVE is abstracted and indexed in Index Medicus, [3] MEDLINE/PubMed, [4] BIOSIS Previews, and Science Citation Index Expanded. [5] According to the Journal Citation Reports , the journal had a 2022 impact factor of 1.2. [6]

Format and scope

JoVE covers research methods and experimental techniques from both the physical and life sciences. The journal currently has 13 sections: Biology, Developmental Biology, Neuroscience, Immunology and Infection, Medicine, Bioengineering, Engineering, Chemistry, Behavior, Environment, Biochemistry, Cancer Research, and Genetics. JoVE also publishes Science Education collections aimed at instructing scientists in fundamental concepts and methods [7] in a range of fields including biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and practical subjects like laboratory safety, cell culturing, and care of Drosophila flies.

Function in replication

Some experiments can be difficult to replicate if they involve techniques that are unfamiliar or unusually sensitive, and a short written description of the original scientific methods might not be sufficient. JoVE videos are a step-by-step visual guide of the actual experiment so that the minute hand movements and other subtle manipulations necessary to perform the experiment successfully can be seen. [8]

Publication costs

JoVE originally started as a full open access publication, but switched to a subscription model in 2009. [9] As of 2023, the cost of video production by JoVE to accompany a published article is $1,400, [10] (though authors can instead opt to produce their own videos). The journal has a hybrid open access option, with an additional article processing charge of $2,500. [10]

<i>Evolution and Human Behavior</i> Academic journal

Evolution and Human Behavior is a bimonthly peer-reviewed academic journal covering research in which evolutionary perspectives are brought to bear on the study of human behavior, ranging from evolutionary psychology to evolutionary anthropology and cultural evolution. BioTechniques: the International Journal of Life Science Methods is a peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal published by Future Science Group. It covers laboratory methods and techniques that are of broad interest to professional life scientists, as well as scientists from other disciplines interested in life science applications of their technologies. The journal was established in 1983 by Eaton Associates, which was acquired in 2001 by Informa. The journal was then acquired by Future Science Group in 2018. It is distributed in both print and online form.

BMC Ecology and Evolution, previously BMC Evolutionary Biology (2001–2020), is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal covering all fields of evolutionary biology, including phylogenetics and palaeontology. It was established in 2001 and is part of a series of BMC journals published by BioMed Central.

The Journal of Natural Products is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering all aspects of research on the chemistry and/or biochemistry of naturally occurring compounds. <i>Journal of Cheminformatics</i> Academic journal

The Journal of Cheminformatics is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal that covers cheminformatics and molecular modelling. It was established in 2009 with David Wild and Christoph Steinbeck as founding editors-in-chief, and was originally published by Chemistry Central. At the end of 2015, the Chemistry Central brand was retired and its titles, including Journal of Cheminformatics, were merged with the SpringerOpen portfolio of open access journals.

The African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines is a peer-reviewed open access medical journal covering research on medicinal plants, traditional medicine, complementary alternative medicine, and food and agricultural technologies. It is included on Jeffrey Beall's list of "Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access journals".
